Went to the Frederic Remington Museum on a snowy Sunday. We were greeted and allowed to cruise the displays. His Bronzes are amazing and artwork displays turn of the century themes. A great way to bring back 100 years of history. It was really a nice and interesting display.

On October 12, 2013 we visited the Frederic Remington Museum in Ogdensburg, NY. In part we decided to visit this museum because a cousin of ours, Ursula Hornbrook, was the curator there in the 1950s and 1960s. We had some knowledge of Remington's work prior to our visit and also printed off the Scavenger Hunt sheets provided on the web site. To learn answers to questions posed in the scavenger hunt we were forced to do a more through examination of the artwork and other memorabilia. This made for a more enlightening visit.
The museum is located in an 1800's era mansion which has been well maintained. Visitors can take an elevator or climb an ornate stairway to the second floor.
Museum staff was well versed regarding Remington's life and artistic pursuits. The gift shop has postcards, books, statuary, etc.
The drawings, pictures and statuary are outstanding. I have never seen such outstanding bronze statuary anywhere else. The fine detailing is breath-taking. The illustrating work that Remington completed was outstanding.
Many years ago when we visited the FBI in Washington, DC there was a confiscated bogus Remington Statute on display. The difference in detailing was remarkable.
The horses look 'alive'. The artwork throughout the museum is wonderful.
The second floor of the museum also contains some furnishings previously owned by the Remington's. My favorite was the exquisitely carved table which was formerly located in the smoking room.
We spent 3 hours at the museum, including the children's place museum. The children's museum has many, many activities for children to participate in, I highly recommend a visit. The museum can be viewed in a much shorter time than we spent there, but we would recommend you plan on spending at least an hour there.
Lastly, there was a juried artist display on the second floor. Some of the artwork displayed was outstanding. There were several types of media displayed and one painting, in particular, seemed as though you could pick the apples off the canvas.
I highly recommend you adding this attraction to your bucket list.

If you have younger children (3-12 years of age), you HAVE to stop in at the Remington Art Museum's Kid's Place in Ogdensburg, NY. Check the schedule, as I think it may change in the winter, but it was free from 11a - 4p in the summer and my kid's absolutely loved it. There are all sorts of 'hands-on' activities for children to explore...from a life-size canoe that kids can fish from to a well-equipped arts and crafts room....children can lose themselves for hours. Add all of this to the well-placed 'educational opportunities' to learn about Frederic Remington and art, and you have a hidden gem on your hands!

On Labor day we stopped in at the museum on a whim after seeing a sign on Rt. 37. We were amazed at the amount of artwork and beauty of the home it was housed in. We spent 2 hours in the museum and had the whole place and guides to ourselves.

Definatly worth a visit..

Very nice small museum about the life and work of Frederic Remington, best known for the cowboy sculpture in the Oval Office. Nearby, we visited the sight of an old French fort, where there is a monument and some panels explaining the history of the area. Well worth crossing the border for a couple of hours.
