“The only place to stay in Ocean Beach”
Reviewed January 27, 2009

When I called to book the Palms there was so many choices...they have multiple bedroom suites with washer and dryers to room with shared bathrooms. They also have 2 locations, one right on the bay with a beachy private yard, the other with a patio to BBQ. The person I spoke to was very patient and informative describing all the options. She told me the rooms are small...very small in the hotel as are the rooms on all of the Island. The town is very small. The streets have foot traffic and no cars other than a few for emergency vehicles. When we got there we very amazed and surprised how wonderful our vacation was. Yes the rooms were small. Our suite was beautifully decorated and imaculate. We had plenty of room to call and invite friends to come for the day and party with us.As we checked in we were offered drinks and cookies. We felt like we were family. We will deifinitly stay here again. We live on Long Island and think this is an excellant place to vacation. Not having to deal with an airport to get there is a huge plus. (while we walked through town we stopped in 2 places close by to compare. I won't mention their names. The both looked run down and had old musty smells with one having the bedroom as a front porch.) The PALMS IS 1ST CLASS!

We had one of the most expensive rooms with a private bath. The room was so small you could not turn around. The bed was a small double. We were located next to the public bathrooms (sorry, shared bathrooms) so that we got to listen to each drunk come home and vomit between midnight and 4 AM. The airconditioning was so cold that we slept in clothes with all windows open to try to get some heat in it. Our headboard backed up to the laundry which ran day and night. Management's reaction to every issue ranged from bored indifference to outright rudeness. When you finally can't stand it you'll find every other hotel has a 2 night minimum stay and you can't move. At $450 a night we couldn't even have our grandchildren visit (no space), but they also have a no children rule (except for the owner's children who live onsite). Please stay anywhere else. We are seasoned world travelers and have never had a worse experience.

For almost $300/night (more expensive that 3 star hotels in Times Square area during the peak season) we got to stay in a shoebox size room and we had to use communal bathroom. It's even smaller than my old dorm room, it only fits a full size bed, a small drawer and a waste basket.. Good luck for those who can't travel light since there's no way they can even place the suitcases and still have some space to walk comfortably. But in all fairness, the place was kept very clean and neat. The bed was comfortable and the staff were very nice and accomodating. We got free beach chair and bikes. Overall though, Fire Island is a very expensive and overpriced place. Don't get mad if they ask you to pay $3 for Snapple..

This was a true dump. It was completely misrepresented on the site. We spent a fortunate for our room and we walked in and it was a shoebox and to add insult to injury, we had to share a bathroom with all the other guests. It was basically like an overpriced dorm.

My husband and I recently took a 3-day trip to Ocean Beach and booked at The Palms for the first time. We were thoroughly surprised and extremely pleased! I work in the hotel industry and was so impressed with the entire staff. From the first phone calls with Bethany and Courtney, to the arrival and meeting the owner Laura and then...on to the newly built Palms at the Bay location with exceptional treatment by Tony! The rooms are kept impeccably well and the beds are so very comfortable. We stayed in the mini suite and the kitchenette that we chose is perfectly well suited for making all meals. Best of all it is pet friendly (small dogs) so it made for a perfect trip! We can't wait to come back and be part of the Palms family again!

We are native LIer's and frequent visitors to FI. We have had many stays over the years. This was the best by far. Everything was top notch from the Staff to the room to the ammenities (whatever you need for the beach/FI expierience) to the fresh lemonade in the lobby after the beach. It was very clean. The rooms were bright and the decor was fitting for a beach Hotel. Didn't want to leave!

We had such a great weekend stay at the Palms in Ocean Beach. The staff was so nice and helpful, whether it was getting our beach chairs or bikes, answering any questions we had or taking our luggage while we went to the beach after checking out. One of the staff even volunteered to help us with our luggage to the ferry. We had a two bedroom mini suite with a private bath. It was certainly nice to have our own bath (a luxury at FI hotels) but I used the other bathrooms as well and they were always clean and in good order. The rooms are small, but that is to be expected. It would have been more convenient if the bathroom was in the middle of the room, but what can you do?! The bed was very comfortable and clean (definitely no sand!!) and had a lot of pillows and a very soft throw blanket. The tv was small, but who's really there to watch TV? The hotel is in the perfect location, an easy walk to the beach and right in the middle of town..perfect for going out for drinks or a nice dinner (I highly recommend the Mermaid Inn). The beach chairs and towels were great, we never had a problem getting either. It was so much fun to take the bikes for a ride to OBP and grab lunch at Flynns. While having drinks one night at Hideaway, we asked some girls who were staying at thier hotel next door how it was and theysaid AWFUL!! So, I think it is worth what ever extra it costs to stay at the Palms. We had a wonderful expperience and didn't want to leave!! I would definitely stay there again and reccomend it to anyone!!
