My girlfriends and I only stayed one night here this year. It certainly isn't inexpensive but if you're willing or able this would be the best place to stay.

The rooms are great! It's comfortable, the kitchen is really nice. The bedrooms themselves are the best. Beds and pillows are so comfy. I had an awesome night's sleep.

The bicycles come with your stay here and we definitely enjoyed that a lot. They don't have a pool but its close to the beach. It's in the heart of Ocean Beach so you won't need to take a bike anywhere or walk far. The boys that help out with your baggage are so helpful. Front desk could use a little more happy juice.

I'm probably never staying anywhere else ever again.

We stayed at the PalmsFire Island Hotel in August 2013, in the beautiful Battery Park Suite. Our suite had a huge open floor plan. It has a living room, dining room, bedroom, bathroom and a full kitchen. It sleeps 6. It is stunningly decorated with a coastal living theme. Every room is provided with central air which is unheard of on Fire Island. The bathroom had a wonderful shower and L’Occitane Bath Products. There was even a Wi-Fi, iPod Docking station and luxurious Egyptian cotton sheets on our bed. The various Palms patios include grills, and everything you need to make a delicious and personal BBQ. The Bay House a private beach area with romantic canopies and outdoor lounge beds. You can even kayak from there! The hotel provided us with beach umbrellas, towels, chairs and wagons. They even have shovels and buckets for the younger children. Our son loved the complimentary pastries and the freshly made popcorn! The staff was professional and respectful and eager to assist us with every request we had.

We are first timers to Ocean Beach/Fire Island. Our experience with the Palms Hotel was good, not great. Many of the posts on Trip Advisor are spot on...we stayed in the Bungalow house and indeed the room (#218) King with private bathroom was a shoebox. The bed is literally against the window and 18 inches from the other wall, you can't even open up the small fridge they provide cause the bed is in the way, so no use for that, we could not wait to get out of the room each time we were in it. Bathroom was avg size but no shelf space at all, and mold on the shower curtain and light bulb was out the entire 3 days. I expected the young staff to be very friendly, help us with luggage at dock, etc - didn't happen. Not one of them cracked a smile the entire 3 days and often 4 or so of them stood around the courtyard desk doing nothing while you stood there waiting to rent a bike, or return beach chairs. I never saw the "free" fruit or danishes or popcorn at all. Pictures on website look beautiful but not in person. It seems like it is the nicest place in Ocean Beach, but prices are steep. We loved the town, but didn't love our stay at the Palms. Yes it's a nice location and you do get free beach chairs, paper thin towels, umbrellas, that was nice. But, no staff was ever around at the Bungalow building, so you couldn't get water, or a towel or no cushions on the chairs.

My boyfriend and I just came back from a very disappointing overnight at the Palms in Ocean Beach Fire Island. I had read all the reviews of this hotel about the great service...we didn't interact with a single person at this resort that I would qualify as anything special. Our room, a king room around the corner from the main hotel in the bungalows, was so tiny that there was no place to even open our small suitcase unless it was on the bed. (less than 2 ft surrounding the king bed.). The room itself was pretty, nice fixtures and the bed comfortable with nice linens, but we were literally tripping over our phone chargers. The bathroom is nice, also small, and there is not a single cup in the room to rinse your mouth...all for $440 for the night.
While the hotel is very nice in supplying, towels, chairs, umbrellas, wagons and bikes, both for while you are there and for the day you check out...they had run out of towels and wagons by noon on our first day, and there were no bikes available the next morning at 9am...when it rained in the afternoon on the beach and several people came back to hang in the outdoor courtyard, the awning that covers it was gone..leaving no where to sit covered. I can't really say how this hotel is compared to all the other choices that many reviewers mentioned as "much worse" because I haven't seen them, but we travel often to many beach resorts, and I don't get this place for that kind of money at all.

Room Tip: I understand there are a few rooms on the upper floor of the bungalows that are a bit more spacious...

We stayed here having originally found it on google and it being subsequently recommended by friends. The web site confirmed the recommendation and most of the reviews on Trip Adviser were favourable apart from one, which in hindsight was the more accurate. The Palms markets itself as falling squarely in the boutique luxury category. This is clearly not the case. The rooms are small, the atmosphere is more akin to that of a backpacker's hostel/hotel. The photos are misleading given the actual size of the room. There were no chairs in the room for obvious reasons, it was physically not feasible. The reception by the front desk was not very welcoming as they seemed stressed by the number of checkins taking place at the time. The front desk appeared to be managed by a woman who was not very attentive or welcoming. Very little additional information was offered. We were aware that checkin was at 4pm. We arrived earlier and we told that we would receive a call if the room became available earlier. At 3.10 we enquired at reception, and we told that the room was available (we received no message or call that the room was received). Moreover, we were not informed that the room was on street level on also facing the courtyard, although we called from Italy to arrange the booking. There is a significant late check out fee,the minimum being $110 for a check out at 2pm. The fan in the bathroom is inordinately loud and there is no window.

We visited the local post office to purchase stamps and received a warmer welcome. Inexplicably there are no coffee tea facilities in the room and the tea offered in the courtyard was barely drinkable. The wifi connection is also slow. On the positive side, the young staff members handling the beach gear were friendly and helpful and they allowed us to use the beach equipment after we had checked out at 11am. Despite late efforts by a staff member on the whole we recommend considering carefully the Palms before booking and reviewing all possible accomodation in the area.

For many years there were many mediocre to terrible hotel choices on Fire Island- well Laura and her husband have figured out how to provide great service, and offer a clean hotel. Many of the people who stay at the Palms are repeat customers. My wife and I went kidless in July and returned in August with the 3 kids. The Palms gives you a wagon, towels, chairs and even Water. If you have never been to Fire Island, it's very rustic, and it's not set up for Day Trippers. 90% of the people on the island, either own homes or rent homes. To have a clean hotel, with air conditioning, TV, and house cleaning was non existant 8 yearsa ago. Enjoy the Island, but be aware, that you are on an island. Things will cost more, as everything needs to be brought over via Boat- Also the people that own business's on the island only have 4 months - to make their $$$$$ If your looking for a great beach vacation, and you willing to walk and bike than this place is for you...

p.s Bring your own Allan Wrench for the bikes, as many of the seats needs to be adjusted and it's easier to do it yourself than wait for someone to try and figure it out.

Room Tip: make sure your luggage has wheels- there is alot of walking you need to do- but that's a good th...
