Just got back from Ocean Beach. My wife found a coupon on Groupon for a Hotel in Ocean Beach. Near the Ferry and on the Bay. Sounded good. Just so your not confused, this hotel I'm talking about isn't "The Palms". This was a the hotel that was up above a commercial establishment. Not there is anything wrong with that. It's upstairs and has VERY small rooms. With very small beds( too short). Also, the bathrooms were outside the rooms in the hall. Four of them for the entire Hotel. So, we stayed there that night. The next day I saw "The Palms Hotel". Absolutely Beautiful outside and in. The main building has a court yard with a bar and seating areas as well as a flat screen TV outside between it and some of their cottages. Very tranquil and relaxing. We stopped in to inquire and spoke to Bobby, one of the managers. Very nice person. And he introduced us to the other members of the staff, Karly and Laura. (Definitely not use to that). Bobby told that they have a total of FIVE Hotels there ( and gave us a tour). ALL completely renovated OLD structures. ( I grew up there. They did a great job with these places ). He also informed us that when you stay with them as a guest of the Hotel, that they have complementary bicycles, wagons (VERY important when coming From and going To the Ferry with your stuff AND they help in bringing your stuff to your room), beach chairs and beach towels available. But, more importantly, they had rooms available. They gave us the rate schedule. NOT cheap! ( Bobby told us that they also do Groupon). BUT, your on Fire Island, where EVERTHING has to come over on a Ferry.
I need a King size bed. Full size doesn't cut it for me. They showed us the rooms. This one was $245/night because we were there on a weekday. And jumps to $345/night on the weekend. Compare that to the NO FRILLS place we stayed the night before, which is also $250/night on the weekday ($150 with the Groupon), and all of the sudden, the cost becomes irrelevant. The rooms are spacious. Bright. Modern. Have in room full bathrooms (something you take for granted), Flat screen TV's, Refrigerators, and of course, the all important A/C. There's an old saying, "You get what you pay for!". Well at "The Palms Hotel" Fire Island, you get that and MUCH MUCH more. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place. Joe G

Room Tip: Get a TOP floor room. It cuts down on noise and the worrying about people walking past your bedroom...

The rooms need to be better taken care of (air vents in bathroom not working, outdoor shower drain broken so water up to ankles, lights above bed not working). Main problem is that when fire alarm sounded at 330am and the entire hotel needed to be emptied because the hotel failed to properly maintain the smoke detector, the front desk offered barely an apology. The outdoor staff is very good and the rooms, although tiny, are generally clean. Bikes, chairs and umbrellas, as well as patio coffee and popcorn are a definite plus. If they put a little more effort into customer service, could be a winner. maybe they get burned out from too many obnoxious summer goers and forget that many guests are decent people deserving of respct and that the customer is sometimes right. Back to basics Palms....

Such a nice and relaxing vacation for any period of time, the staff is energetic and eager to work, they know what to do and how to help. My family stayed in Chelsea cottage and it was so comfortable and the outdoor showers are a very nice touch to paradise. I loved all the members of the staff including Ryan, Paul, ghitsa, Arik, karly, Ken, bobby, ksenia, slavka, Steve, Kerry, Connor, Quinn, Ali, Mike Roemer, Tyler, Kenny and russel

We recently stayed at the Palms and had a great experience. Our original plans got a little messed up, but luckily the Palms was extremely accomodating. We stayed in the Chelsea Cottage, which was a beautiful and spacious arrangement. The Palms is right around the corner from all the restaurants, shops and bars in Ocean Beach. The staff (Laura, Katie, Ryan, Bobby, Kenny and the rest of the luggage crew) was extremely courteous and helpful, and really salvaged our weekend. Thanks again, guys.

Terrible deception - unclear how they won Tripadvisor 2012 award. Youth hostel instead of boutique hotel, hosting 4,5 youngsters in every room, except for us (family with child). Cardboard walls, extremely bad housekeeping (dirty, room refreshing had to be requested), twin beds that are too small for a couple, a bathroom the size of a small closet. Hotel should be obliged to warn not only that Ocean Beach is a lively, loud and active community (which is apparently a synonym for booming, all night long DJ parties visited by truckloads of drunk twenty-somes), but also that it is not a place for families with children. At least not the Palms Bay part of the hotel.

Room Tip: Check beforehand what bookings are made for the rooms around you. Avoid Palms Bay location at all co...

I came out to Ocean Beach for an extended weekend at the Palms to celebrate a friend's birthday. While our room (a town view efficiency at the Palms Bay) was very small and there were a few mosquitos flying around, I found it to be clean and comfortable. I wasn't expecting to sleep on a pull-out couch, but it wasn't that bad and the housekeeping staff came each night for turn-down service so we didn't have to wrestle with it ourselves. I have nothing but great things to say about the Palms Bay staff, especially Ghita and Kenny, who went above and beyond to make sure we had ice, water, fresh towels, and a wagon with beach chairs ready to go when it was time to hit the beach. In my opinion, they made the stay well-worth it.

Be advised if you are staying here that there are no closets and only a few hooks to hang things, but we had plenty of drawer space in the room for 4 guests and we managed to avoid having to live out of suitcases. Having a fridge and a microwave in the room was a huge plus and saved us from having to eat all of our meals out. Matthews and Bocce Beach are noisy, crowded bars...so don't expect to stay here and get to sleep before the late night hours. If you want peace and quiet, a rental closer to the beach is more appropriate as the village itself is usually bustling.

The staff had no problems with us staying and hanging out past check-out, and they provided us with towels to use the outdoor shower (also very clean). You can also check your luggage at the main part of the hotel so you can enjoy a full day at the beach or in town and not have to worry about lugging around your stuff.

I would definitely stay here again without a doubt!

This was the first time in Fire Island. We stayed at the bungalows. It was a beautiful, but small room. NO closet or even hooks to hang up your things. The teenager who showed us to the room provided NO information about amenities. When asked about the private beach, he said there wasn't any (there was - at the bayside Palms), which we had access to and found out our last day. The first day we were there, we put our "clean room" sign up at 8:30am. At 2pm, we saw the cleaning lady". By 4pm, our room still wasn't cleaned. No towels, toilet paper, etc. We asked for the room to be cleaned. By 7:30pm, we returned to our room- still not cleaned! It was unacceptable. There was a sign that said there was a happy hour for guests at 4pm. At 4:15pm we showed up and were told it only took place on weekends!
For the $430 a night, we did get two chocolate kisses on our bed. There was no help with getting any of the water taxis, massage appointments, or information about the other areas of the island. The place was run by young people, with no real management. The walls were paper thin. Due to the service, lack of service, and unprofessionalism, i am giving this hotel 2 stars. Dont charge that amount of money and then offer no services- even at the low-key area of fire island!
