“Fun riding the donkey up”
Reviewed August 29, 2014

Riding the donkey up in the morning was fun. It costed €5. Donkey had its own mind, it decided when to pause and resume. My donkey even reached up to eat some tree branches. Fortunately, it decided to walk up again. Midway, guy came and took your photo. You could purchase the photo for €4 each. That's a lot cheaper than cruise ship photo, :-)

Eventually, we reached the top after about 25 minutes. I am not sure why some people and cruise line advise not to ride the donkey. In my mind, everyone has to make a living. Someone need to feed the donkey. Plus, the line for the tram can be long.

We walked down the stairs in the afternoon. It took about 25 minutes. Steps could be slippery at edge of each step so walked slowly. You had to avoid the donkey and the poop too.

“Good hike up/down, don't take the donkeys”
Reviewed August 22, 2014

We enjoyed the walk down and up (it is a serious workout). Ammoudi port is better if oia because better views and nicer restaurants at bottom. DO NOT TAKE THE DONKEYS!!! it is just mean given the way they are treated and the donkeys end up crapping up and down the path. Walk it or take the cable car, but don't take the donkeys.

“I wouldn't walk it again!!”
Reviewed August 20, 2014

We were visiting Santorini on a cruise ship and docked here in Fira. After getting off the ship, we decided to take a transfer boat to Oia which also included a bus ticket back to Fira afterwards (very handy, I would recommend doing this... no queuing for cable cars, it brings you straight to Oia the postcard perfect Santorini that you have seen). It was €25 for the boat and bus combined trip to Oia.
Anyways now on to these steps!! We decided to walk down the steps when we returned to Fira. I wouldn't recommend it and was glad that we didn't decide to walk up them. It was a long walk down, the stones were so slippy and every time a gust of wind came along, it blew donkey poo along with it!! Not the most pleasant walks I have ever done! The cable car is a much better option for €5 and there was no queue. We just thought that the walk would be nice. Of course you could get on a donkey either but I didn't want to do that!
So your options when you dock in Fira, Santorini are:
1. Cable car to Fira at the top of the hill €5 each way. It's a nice town and there are taxis to bring you to Oia if you wish to go there.
2. Walk up the steps to Fira (I wouldn't recommend it, 40minutes ish maybe).
3. Get a boat transfer over to Oia which will include a boat back to Fira (€25)

“nightmare if too many ships are visiting”
Reviewed July 30, 2014

We thought this would be a great walk down to the port. BIG MISTAKE! The stairs are uneven steep and rather treacherous. Add donkeys and a large number of tourists stopping to take pictures every 2 feet and its a disaster waiting to happen. I would avoid these stairs during the day when any cruise ships are in port.

“Best donkey ride anywhere”
Reviewed July 22, 2014

The donkey ride was so much fun. Outstanding views as you get nearer to the top of the 600 odd stairs.
