“Good view of the caldera”
Reviewed June 20, 2013

The hotel is located around 5 minutes walk of the bus station and is a good starting point to explore the island. I found the staff to be helpful. The view of the caldera is fantastic on the shared balcony. I stayed on the bottom level and there are a lot of stairs but I didnt find this a problem, it was good exercise, I think most hotels on the cliff will have a lot of stairs. There is a small bottle of complimentary wine in the fridge. I arrived a few hours before check in time and departed late but it wasnt a problem storing my bag with them.

The bad points were most of the time the wifi didnt work my the room, it only worked when I was outside of the room. I was told about this by the receptionist when I checked in, she said to try and go near a window but this didnt work either. I found the air conditioning to be inadequate, it didnt cool the room enough even at full blast. The breakfast could be improved, you choose what you want to drink, tea/coffee/orange juice and they bring you a tray of food consisting of 2 bread rolls, 2 croissants, a hot pastry, and fruit salad. (I thought there was also a bowl of sour cream but having read the other reviews this might have been greek yogurt)

If they could improve on the above, this hotel would be perfect.

This place was amazing- beautiful views; excellent, friendly helpful staff (they can book tours, give advice on anything etc), colourful rooms and terrace, location that can't be beat and delicious breakfast! There are many steps, however, so if you can't handle too many steps, when booking you should ask for a room closer to reception and with fewer steps. On the bright side, you can look out at one of the most amazing views while you catch your breath :). When you've finally gotten to the top you are on one of the main little walkways with shops, restaurants and the bus stop just steps away.

Excellent location and wonderful staff. However beds were old and hard as rocks. We stayed here three nights and did not get much sleep due to the uncomfortable beds. Rooms are clean and hotel has awesome views.

I never thought a hotel could have such a negative effect on my stay in Greece, but this hotel did!
From the first moment we arrived, there was a problem-many, many steps! There was NO elevator in this hotel which is built on the side of a cliff. We walked sixty-five long outdoor steps and finally reached our room. This was an old fashioned spacious room. No problem. However, there was NO space in the bathroom. If a 200 pound person tried to use the room, it would have been impossible! Also the room afforded us very little privacy (with open windows) since every guest had to pass our room to get to breakfast! When I asked for another room,( since going up the 65 steps was quite difficult), I was refused.
The view was very beautiful, breakfast was okay, and the front desk was helpful.

Room Tip: No elevator! Walking the steps was miserable!

One would hard pushed to find a better location to stay in Fira. Located immediately adjacent to “Gold Street” in the island’s capital is Hotel Kavalari, a converted sea captain’s house that now provides a magical location to enjoy the wonderful views of Santorini’s Caldera. Rooms, which are nicely unique in their shape/structure, are clean and bright (though you will be out & about for most of your stay here) and provide everything needed for a comfortable stay. Some rather lovely in-room touches include various Moroccan lanterns and candles which prove ideal in the evening. Kavalari is a very social hotel in that a number of terraces are communal, allowing guests to chatter over a glass of wine in the evening whilst watching the sun go down so the lanterns / candles prove their worth when sat on your terrace (though of course there is electric lighting outside too). The plants & flowers that adorn each of the terraces are also stunning and incredibly well tended – fans of flora will be very impressed by the array.

There is a very small jacuzzi pool on the lower terrace, the latter being furnished with tables, chairs and ‘deck chairs’ as opposed to sun loungers (those wishing to worship the sun should note that as the hotel faces south west, the sun generally doesn’t hit the terraces until late morning / mid-afternoon). Breakfast is taken on this same terrace as well as a lower terrace so the views really are superb with breakfast consisting of pastries, breads, fruit salad and the accompanying condiments. Fresh orange juice and tea/coffee are also provided as a matter of course. Staff here are equally friendly, helpful and accommodating so a stay of any duration really is a pleasurable experience.

Given the hotel’s location on a pedestrian street opposite Fira Cathedral, a degree of lugging your luggage will be required from your taxi to the hotel reception (after which a member of staff will take it to your room). Also, guests will need to navigate a number of steps (some steep) to get to their rooms but then you are on the side of a cliff so this should be expected. Additionally, owing to the hotel’s location and occasional cruise ship visiting, the street surrounding the entrance can get rather busy at times but should not put off potential guests (the cruise ship folk move on soon enough).

Hotel Kavalari provides an excellent base to explore Fira and Santorini and comes highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms are all unique so depends on what a guest's preference is

To stay at this hotel is to have views of a slice of heaven!! You eat breakfast outside facing the water and views of other greek islands. The staff members are so knowledgable and friendly. A great value and great location!
