“First experience of Santorini.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here for a week in July 2013 on a bed and breakfast basis and found it very good value for money. Lots of sunbeds and a choice of 5 pools to choose from and we found the staff reasonable. Great location just 5 minutes walk from fira and the local supermarket that sells reasonably priced food and drink. The one thing the brochures don't empathise is the constant breeze that blows across Santorini, however this helps to kill some of the heat during the day and is quite refreshing. There are always things that you could find fault with even holidaying at home but come Santorini and enjoy the experience and fantastic sunsets. Fira is very busy due to the cruise ships that visit every day and if you want a good vantage point for the sunset then get there early and enjoy. ...

We stayed at El Greco last year as a last minute choice after adding a couple of days to our Santorini stay. The experience we had last year was better than that of this years. We stayed this year for 4 nights. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk into Fira Town along a busy road. The hotel is very large with about 4 or 5 swimming pools. However this hotel does not have any caldera/ocean views. On our previous stay last year we spent 2 nights at El Greco and then 3 nights at a hotel in Fira Town overlooking the Caldera (Cosmopolitan Suites). This gave us a bit of everything as we hired an Quad Bike whilst staying at El Greco and went exploring for a couple of days, then had the relaxing and romantic Fira Town stay. This year we booked to only stay at El Greco and in hindsight we regret not staying somewhere more special. Santorini is such a beautiful and special place, you might as well stay somewhere amazing. El Greco is large, clean, friendly etc.

The room we had was in a newly opened wing down the very far side of the hotel, this was quite annoying. The room was big and comfortable, the air condition was great. The Wifi was very poor. There are two restaurants that serve breakfast, and we were told at check in that we could eat at either. Yet on the second day when trying the upper restaurant we were embarrassingly told that we must go down to the restaurant nearest to our room.

A further issue that affected us was our booking payment. I had booked our room months in advance on their website on a pre-pay special. Booking terms were that full payment would be taken. I received this as an email also. Thus I assumed we had paid. However upon check out we were told that the room had not infact been paid (that they could see) and we would have to pay again, and this would be refunded if incorrect. As we had a flight to catch we had little time to login to our banking (especially using their poor Internet) and as such paid. They said they would email me within 12 hours to inform, but never did. I also emailed them 3 times before a response. The prepayment was not taken (as such we were not double charged) however this was an inconvenience for us as we prefer to travel without owing large amounts, and also due to the fact that since the booking was made a long time ago the australian dollar has declined (had the booking been paid when the hotels website said we would have saved over $100 australian dollars compared to the currency rates at check out).

One positive was the complimentary airport transfer they provided after realising they had made these mistakes. Don't get me wrong it is a nice hotel. But my tip would be to spend just that little bit extra for a Caldera view hotel in Fira Town. Or if you have 4 or 5 nights split your time between a hotel with a view in Fira Town, and a couple of nights on Kamari beach which has a really brilliant atmosphere with dozens of restaurants and a great vibe. That way you get the romance and spectacular views for a couple nights, and the fun and family beach feel for a couple of nights.

This hotel is well positioned, just a short walk into Fira. The rooms were excellent - clean, well appointed, helpful staff and a beautiful setting. Thoroughly recommend it .Breakfast was an excellent buffet.

The hotel was clean and beautiful....however we paid for half board and the food supplied was basically disgusting(hence the poor rating). The breakfast was fine and plentiful, with many people in attendance. The evening meal however, was poorly attended and the choice of foods was...well horrible. hot meals left to go cold, deserts with honey dripping over them and salads left uncovered and to the mercy of the abundant supply of flying insects. I and my Wife attempted to dine there for 2/3rds of our holiday. But found very little to eat...and resorted to going into Fira for meals. On one occasion a sympathetic waitress saw our faces and the despair at what was on offer and allowed us to order from the main menu. When these meals arrived they were hot and very tasty. Which goes to show the food could be good...but the buffet simply did not match up to expectations. All in all it was very poor. Indeed I had to take imodium for stomach cramps after the first couple of days attempting to eat there. We avoided the water, so the only other possibility was the food, and given the breakfast was hot and very good....that left the evening meal.

In short El, Greco should NOT offer half board!!

Room Tip: pick the old part if you can...great rooms and better location

Stayed there for 3 days . Hotel was part of my package.first night came late and felt like they put us in a broom closet. Breakfast fair pools where fine and no problem finding chairs.after initial complaint we more moved to a better room.Internet didn't work well.Location was fine .The island is one of theist beautiful places in the world. If I knew about the island would of spent more on a much more upscale hotel .Did the walk from fira to oia it's long and parts are scary and unsafe.A lot more stressful than we heard it was but made it in 4 hrs with lunch and stops along the way

We stayed here for 1 week at the start of July 2013 half board. The location of the hotel is perfect, 5min stroll into Fira which is probably one of the best resorts on the island. Upon arrival we were given the keys to our room which was a first floor room with a lovely curved ceiling and a shared balcony. The finish and decor of the room was ok, nothing to shout about and probably doesn't meet the same flash standard of the communal areas of the hotel but it was spotless and cleaned very well and regularly. Breakfast is a buffet and served at 2 restaurants. We found the bottom one to be the best. Food was good and to a high standard at breakfast and also evening meal. Plenty to chose from for starters and main courses but the desert table was pretty poor. Only had very sweet Greek cakes which were all drowned in some sort of syrup...probably a Greek tradition. Drinks at the bar were expensive but this is the norm in most of the hotels we have stayed in. They don't have an issue with you filling your fridge with drinks from the local supermarket. Facilities at the hotel were good. I used the gym twice which whilst there wasn't loads of equipment, it was all of a high new standard. The spa building was fabulous and very well kitted out. The pools were all good, clean and well maintained. They seemed to lack when it comes to number of sun beds so get up early!! There is no shop on site but the supermarket is only a 2 minute walk so no real issue here. This is a good hotel but our only gripe was the real lack of personality of the place, the staff didn't really seem to want to know and came across as a little frosty at times. Other than this we would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Consider room upgrade if you want something special.
