This restaurant had been recommended to us by the owner of the hotel we were staying at in Oia. We had a reservation for a nice table and arrived a few minutes early. The manager apologized that our table wasn't ready and seated us on the lower terrace in front of the service entrance. He said our table would be ready in 10 minutes (Greek time = an hour?). The terraces were small and the tables were very close, ensuring little privacy. A waiter arrived and asked to take our order. We were a bit surprised as we assumed they would take our drink order and then wait til we were moved before ordering. There was only one entree on the menu I could eat, and that dish needed to be altered. We gave the waiter our entree orders (again, no offer of a drink, etc). He stated emphatically that we had to order a salad AND an appetizer as well. We told him there was nothing on the menu we wanted other than the entree. We were going to order wine and probably dessert. He told us we HAD to order, as there was a 45€ minimum order per person! This was not printed on the menu. The three other couples sharing our small space were within earshot of us. It was a very embarrasing situation. It was not an issue of money. We were paying over 300$ a night for our rooom, and most certainly would have spent over 45€ each as the entrees were minimum 27€ to over 40€ each. Wine by the glass was 8€ (same wine at the corner market for 8€ a bottle).
We advised the manager we would not be staying and we left.
I am not in the habit of having a restaurant tell me how much food I have to order. This is only one of several restaurants in Oia, all with equally impressive views, but none other that we visited that set a minimum order. Try "Ochre" for a fantastic view and superb food. "Floga" is also very nice with views and great tastes to match. Neither will set you back near 45€ and you'll be much happier. We were! Avoid Ambrosia at 45€ minimum!!!!
