Mystique Luxury Collection Hotel
Ranked #18 of 56 Hotels in Oia
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 10, 2009

WARNING: if you are not in good shape do not stay here. You must walk up several flights of uneven stairs to get anywhere. If you are handicapped in any way DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER this hotel.

We spent 5 nights here on our honey moon because everyone told us we had to go to santtorini. Santorini is nice, but not for three days. First it is really windy and the beaches aren't so great, the island is only 10 miles long and its a tourist trap. There are some great wines on the island and if you choose to stay at Mystique you MUST do their wine tasting it was an excellent experience but I wouldn't stay more than two nights on Santorini.

Now to the hotel. When we first arrived and walked down I think 200 uneven stairs we were shown to our room which was literally a hole in the wall. Although there are amazing views from the hotel our room had no windows and was dark and musty. I decided to leave and was upgrade to a spiritual suite that had windows in every room and was beautiful! The hotel is located within walking distance to Oia which is romantic and quaint but walking in OIA is a work out. We stayed in bed until noon most days out of fear of the stairs. The restaurant in the hotel is ok, I wouldn't eat anything other than a snack or breakfast at the hotel there are tons of great restaurants within walking distance. The pool (aka the puddle) is tiny but functional. The staff is great, very accommodating. They always go above and beyond. If you stay here I recommend going to their sister hotel during the day which is in a traditional greek village has an excellent pool and is near the beach. Do not stay at the sister hotel because there is nothing to do at night there. Go to the sister hotel in the morning lie by the pool or beach come back in time to clean up and go to dinner in OIA. For Santorini this is an excellent hotel, especially since you can use the accomadations at its sister hotel. However, its not for everyone. If your not in good shape or want a beach vacation this is not for you. the beaches are awful and its usually too windy to use the beach or pool. Also call in advance and schedule a sailing trip to the hot springs to watch the sunset, by far the best thing to do on the island and don't forget the wine tasting which was awesome.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your comments on Mystique posted on Trip Advisor and for your wonderful comments for our employees.

We would like to note that as a volcanic island, Santorini’s structure consists of cliffs and lava rocks. That is why it is such a special destination and a place for one to visit at least once in a lifetime.

We do mention on our website that the property is built on the cliffs. This is not only a characteristic of Mystique though, but of all hotels on the island. There are no 200 steps to reach the hotel from the main road, but are about 50 steps, built in the traditional public pathway. This offers two important advantages at the hotel. Firstly, it is far from the main road, so we avoid the noise from the traffic and people passing by that could disturb our guests privacy and secondly, we are the first hotel on the Caldera, therefore we offer unobstructed views to the Aegean Sea and the Santorinian Caldera.

The island is not famous for the long golden sand beaches like other Greek islands are. It is a volcanic island. The hotel though, does offer a private space on the best well organized black sand beach on the island, called Perivolos. Our restaurant there operates for the whole day and the facilities (towels, sunbeds and umbrellas) are offered complimentary to our guests.

Regarding the rooms, Cave Houses is the traditional architecture of Santorini. There is no other way a house or a hotel can be built on a cliff site. Mystique actually offers large spaces for the standards of Santorini, as it is built horizontally and not vertically. Similar rules are valid for the pool. There are very strict laws about how something can be built in Santorini, what can be changed and in what way and size it will be constructed. The whole construction of the property follows the local legislation and is built with respect to the traditional architecture and design.

As for our restaurant, this is private to our guests and our sister property’s guests only. The menu is a harmonic combination of fresh ingredients, traditional recipes and a modern cooking and presentation of the dishes. The exceptional that we offer, is that our guests can create their own menu. Our Chef can prepare anytime a dish according to our guests tastes, which one can not find easily anywhere else.

As far as activities are concerned on the island, indeed as you mention wine tasting is on the top of the list, as Santorini is famous for the exceptional wines. A cruise to the Volcano is also a must do on the island, but except that, there are various other activities such as water sports, horse riding, hiking, diving, romantic candlelight dinners, ancient sites and many more.

Kindest Regards,

Antonia Veskou
Hotel Manager

We recently stayed at The Mystique for our 25th Anniversary. We wanted this to be a special destination, unlike any other we've been to. It exceeded all our expectations. Upon arrival we knew it was going to be relaxing, romantic and completely unwinding. The service was excellent. The staff knew us by our first names. Our Room, Villa #7 was very spacious, comfortable and hard to leave. The location was great. We walked to everything and never needed to take a cab. The village was a short walk away with lots of shops and restaurants, including spectacular views of the sunsets.

The room and the grounds are very pristine and lovely. I loved the cave atmosphere and the view from my room and terrace. I was there May 1 st and it was very, very windy which I was told was normal for the start of the season. It is a very short walk to town the only hard part is the last set of steps from the resort to the street. The hotel restaurant is nice enough for breckfast and lunch but a bit too plain for dinner.

You can not see the tv from the bed. The staff was very friendly yet did not get me the reservation I wanted for dinner which they said was due to being the start of the season.

I wonder if it would have been better later in the season

My husband and I went to Santorini after a whirlwind trip through Turkey. We were exhausted and wanted only to relax. The transportation from the airport was efficient and we arrived to Mystique around Noon, where the staff greeted us with a glass of champagne and took us on a little tour of the property.

We were then taken to our room (Allure Suite #3), which was lovely. It is just above the pool and restaurant level, and it is in the corner, so we didn't have anyone walking past our room. The color palette is soft and neutral with nice sized bathroom and a huge bathtub. The staff is always friendly and addresses you by name. One of the bellmen overheard us talking about trying to find a bar where we could watch a big soccer match, and he quickly (and politely) suggested a pizza place where he goes to watch the matches. We went there and it was a hit. The bellman later ran into us and stopped to ask if we had found it and whether we enjoyed it. Antonia and Dimitra made dinner reservations for us every night and the next day always remembered where they sent us and asked if we enjoyed it. They are so warm and caring - it's almost as if you are staying with family - a very well-trained and efficient family. The breakfast was nice, your standard fruit, breads, eggs type of breakfast. We did not have dinner on the property, so cannot comment.

We took the recommended semi-private catamaran tour of the caldera and this was amazing - you feel like royalty. We also rented a Smartcar and explored the island and also drove over to the black beach, which was a nice way to spend the afternoon (I think the hotel also offers bus service to the black beach). The hotel has their own private area there, with lounge chairs, towels and food service.

The hotel is about a 5 minute walk to the start of the pedestrian road in Oia, and you do have to walk in the street with the cars, but the cars drive slowly, so we didn't feel any danger. I read an earlier post from someone who was unhappy with all the stairs at Mystique - well, if you do not like stairs then Santorini is not for you as practically the entire island has stairs because it is built on the side of a cliff. It is not only Mystique that has stairs, but pretty much everywhere in Oia, Fira and Imerovigli has stairs.

As far as restaurants 1800 was our favorite for a more gourmet experience. Ambrosia was our second favorite (it's a close second). We thought Red Bicycle was okay but do not agree with other reviewers that gave it rave reviews. The service and view were lovely, but perhaps we did not order the best items on the menu.

We are pretty well-traveled and we can be quite picky, but I have to say that Mystique and Santorini surpassed our expectations by a mile. I had a romantic idea of what the island would be like, but nothing really prepared me for the reality. It sounds cliche, because how long can you sit and stare at this view of the caldera? Well, trust me, it was mesmerizing. I want to go back! We would definitely go back to Mystique and would recommend it to our friends!

My husband and I stayed at Mystique for our honeymoon and were very pleased with the hotel. The rooms were quite private and almost resembled white caves - very romantic with a large jacuzzi and private sun terrace. The views of the Caldera were breathtaking, and we loved being within walking distance of Oia.

Great service! Would recommend to those traveling to Santorini! Just make sure you sign up for the semi-private boat cruise, it's a blast.

We just got back from a great trip to Santorini. We took the ferry from Mykonos and were greeted by the driver from Mytsique. We were advised that we were dropping guests off at Vedema and we would be the second drop so it took us a long time to get to the resort. They said it was on the way- they should probably get 2 cars in this situation so we wouldn't have had to take the extra drive because it didn't feel like it was on the way. But it ended up being okay because we were just taking in the views. The resort was really nice- great views of the caldera and a quiet intimate feel since there are only 18 suites.
We booked an Allure Suite and were shown to one that had a really nice large terrace. It was close to the pool and restaurant area which was nice because we didn't have to many stairs to climb, but also meant there were more people always walking by our suite so there was less privacy. They had also filled up the large jacuzzi for our stay which had a beautiful view too- unfortunately the view also was on the footpath so everyone walking by could also see into our bathroom unless we had the window closed. What also was inconvenient about this was that they encouraged us to have the bathroom doors closed and the window open because of the jacuzzi humidity- so every time we got back we had to be careful that we were properly dressed going into the bathroom because the window was wide open from the housekeeping opening it and we had to step into the jacuzzi to close it again. I found the room to be quite irritating in that way. I know there are other rooms that are more private but the one we were in definitely was not. We were told this room was one of the "favorites" but I highly doubt that considering the lack of privacy. The only plus was it did have a large terrace and a great view of the caldera and sun throughout the day. The villas and the spiritual suites I believe have much more privacy.

I would note that there are some really tough stairs to get up and down to the resort from the footpath above. We are both very fit people and still were tired going up the stairs. If anyone has problems with stairs you may want to think about staying here- the stairs to go up and down are not normal, it is the cobblestone type stairs so you have to be careful with each step. I'm not sure if this is true of all the resorts in Oia- but because Mystique is lower you have more stairs to deal with. Forget about wearing heels with those stairs especially after a glass or two of wine. We did appreciate the wonderful staff that carried our bags up and down and we tipped them very well- I can't imagine carrying two 50lb bags up and down those stairs- it was bad enough just walking it with my purse!

The staff at the front were also very friendly and nice- they made reservations for us at restaurants and booked an excursion for us as well. They were helpful and nice, although one thing that annoyed me was that they consistently said the sunset was at 7:30pm when clearly it was around 8:15pm. The first night we wanted to go see the sunset, but they said we would miss it because it was at 7:30, and it was right around that time, so we just ate at the resort and missed it. They should know exactly what time the sunset is and give everyone accurate information so if we did want to walk down we could have still made it.

The breakfast was pretty good with various choices hot and cold. We didn't have lunch at the resort because we would go to town everyday and eat at various places there. We did have one dinner at the resort which was just okay. I wasn't impressed with anything except the chocolate souffle which was one of the best from our trip. The sommelier at Mystique was wonderful- he picked some wonderful Greek wines for us throughout our stay. We really enjoyed having wine at the resort because of his selections.

The pool is nice- we got in it one day after a hike and it was nice and refreshing and not too small. The chairs by the pool offer a really nice view to the caldera too. Mystique is a little lower than other resorts so a little different of a view but really nice. We thought the restaurant area also had a lovely view.

Some little issues we had: They left wine and champagne and snacks for us on various days but would never pick up the dirty plates- we even left them at the front and wondered why they wouldn't get them. We finally decided to put all the plates and tea cups and everything else on the balcony and called them to clear it up after 2 days. They did take it at that point but I am not sure why housekeeping would just leave it knowing it was done? My husband had laundry done and after 2 days didn't see it and questioned where it was- they acted surprised like they didn't know about it and finally went back and found it. At other resorts the laundry sometimes was brought back the same day and at the latest the next morning.

Definitely walk up the path to the right of the resort- the opposite way from Oia- towards Fira- there is a great hike and awesome photo opportunities. Be careful walking up to the main footpath of the village- it is only a few minutes but the car/buses get so close.

Overall we enjoyed our stay but the service and room didn't quite meet the mark for an excellent rating. We did however LOVE Oia and enjoyed walking to town everyday and eating at all the different restaurants and taking in the gorgeous views. The sunsets were so magnificent from the point in Oia and also from the sunset sail excursion. I would highly recommend a dinner at 1800 and Red Bicycle. We also enjoyed Thalami for lunch too. Definitely walk down to Amoudi too- cute little area down there. The sunset sail is also a great experience too.

We hope to return to Santorini and Oia one day. We thought late May was a great time to go- not too many crowds which is just the way we like it. Try to avoid the town on the cruise boat days and it is a much quieter experience. Next time we will probably stay somewhere else though- maybe one of the luxury suites closer in to Oia Village. We loved being able to walk into town easily and would have liked something closer in to the restaurants and sunset point. We did think Mystique was a very good place to stay though, just wish there was a little more privacy for our room, if we did ever stay here again it would have to be in the villas or spiritual suites to offer more privacy.

After flying through the night from London, it was an absolute pleasure to be collected in the Mystique Mercedes and driven to the hotel. The initial view was absolutely breathtaking, and our dream just got better as we were taken to an "anything you want, and all you can eat" breakfast. This followed by an 8am check in to our room and the filling of our Spa that looked out over the Oia Crater.

We spent 4 amazing nights in this dreamworld, and could not fault a thing. What made it the most perfect place was undoubtedly the staff led by Demi. They did absolutely everything for you. Organized your trips and meals and always were there to greet you after a hard day of sun baking to check everything was to your liking.

Would we go again? Well, give me the air ticket and I will be there in a flash. This is the place to stay in Santorini. Don't even think about staying elsewhere, or you will regret it.

By the way go eat at "The Rd Bicycle" at the end of Oia Village. It is food to die for.
