My daughter and I recently spent 11 days at Lena's House in Santorini, Greece, and it was absolutely the best experience I have ever had! The view of the Aegean is amazing, right at your front door, as soon as you walk out in the morning. Lena's is located in the village Oia which is beautiful, serene, quiet, and the people who live and work there are the friendliest you will ever meet. Maria Fouka, who we worked with to rent the cave house is amazing. She goes out of her way to insure your comfort and to make sure that you have everything you need. Vilsilus, who works for Maria, is also absolutely the best. He carries your luggage, and is always there to help. The house is a traditional cave house, built into the cliffs, so there is no internet service or phone service, and there are about 35 stone steps leading down the cliff to the house, however, if you are looking for serenity, peace, and the most spectacular view you have ever witnessed, those modern necessities are not needed. I would HIGHLY rate Lena's House as the BEST place to stay in Santorini!

I'm sure you've read all the other reviews and everyone's mentioned the view? Well, I just have to add to that - THE VIEW IS UNBELIEVABLE! Of our 6 week jaunt in Europe, Santorini blew us away, and part of that was because we stayed at Lena's House and had the amazing view from our balcony! My partner and I had the bigger 1bedroom apartment (which we shared the balcony, but it was fine cos we met a lovely canadian couple on their honeymoon and they shared their Oia tips with us). The cave house has no aircon, so it was quite difficult to sleep at night as it was HOT, and the bed is very hard, but other than that - it was great! My partner often hit his head getting into the bathroom as it was a bit low, but no dramas for the short people :)
Vasili met us at the bus terminal and took us down to the apartment, he's a workhorse, can easily lift 30kg bags over his head - amazing! I didn't meet Maria, but Vasili was great!
Must Do’s: Spend a day at Perissa Beach, shopping in Fira and have a gyros, eat at Ammoudi Bay (seafood restaurant)
Lena's House is truly something special, you have your own piece of paradise in Oia, and it was very cool to see the blue door, to get to Lena's House feature in all the postcards and souvenirs!

We stayed at Lena's House this year with friends (2 other couples) for 4 nights. Organising the stay was easy (all done via email). Very reasonable rate (especially for June on Santorini). Very quaint little Cave Houses (we had 2 side by side w shared balcony, while our friends stayed at Casa Sophia a few steps down - same owners). Beautiful balcony w table, chairs & umbrella - and breathtaking views! Walking distance to restaurants, shops & sunset viewing area for Oia. We will all always remember sitting in the courtyard/balcony area each evening - drinking Mythos beer, eating olives & cheese, chatting, & (accidentally) over-feeding the resident (read: stray?) cats! Clean & convenient. Others may not like having to step outside to use the separate shower & toilet (didn't bother us at all - literally 2m from our door and still within the locked courtyard/balcony area, nice hot shower & reasonable sized bathroom despite being separate from Cave House. We never felt we lacked privacy). The other Cave House/s had inside bathrooms. Sitting area inside was lovely. Spare single bedroom also to put our spare stuff. Plenty of room to put bags etc. Bed was a little soft (although I have a crook back so am fussy). Good to note if you have an early flight/ferry that early morning departures at that time of year are locked into taxi transfers because buses don't run.

We stayed at Lena's Apartments for 5 days on our honeymoon. It was wonderful. We stayed in the cave apartment which really is a tunnel into the side of the hill. You can see where the rocks have been plastered over.
Maria arranged for a taxi to pick us up at the ferry and we were met at the taxi station by Vasilis who led us to the apartment. Be sure you pay attention to how to get there--it can be confusing at first. The balcony is shared by two apartments. It has tables with umbrellas and a huge bouganvillea that scatters petals picturesquely across the threshold. The bathroom has a separate entrance but it was still reasonably private to get to it. The tiny kitchen has a 3 burner stove with a small oven, coffee maker and sandwich press. There were enough dishes and pots to prepare simple meals. There are 2 tiny bedrooms off of the living room. It was all nicely decorated, however, be aware that there are no drawers or closets. We used the second bed to organize our stuff. Also, be aware that even normal sized people have to duck to get into the kitchen -- if you're very tall you may want to opt for one of the other apartments.
The apartment is far enough away from the main street that the balcony is nice and quiet. We preferred spending our time there rather than fighting the cruise ship crowds filling the narrow streets above us. We spent hours on the balcony just enjoying the awesome view.

The studio is so dirty, the floor covering had so many stains on it. There is a floor fan in the room; it's so dusty and dirty you don't even want to turn it. it look like it had never been cleanes since it was purchased. All the furniture are very old and very dusty. The screens on the window are so dirty and cloged no air come thru. The Bathroom is a joke, the shower head is outside of the curtain area, you have to hold the shower head in you hand while takeing a shower. It is worse if you have long hair. The shower curtain is all ripped at the bottom.
The view is good, however, lot of hotels have the same view, pay a little more and stay some where nice.

We stayed in the studio at Lena’s house this August. We were happy with our choice. Upon our request the owner promptly arranged transfer from the airport. We were met by Vasili (who is a meet-and-greet person) at the bus station and our bags were brought to the studio. Those who have been to Oia knows- it is a heavy job …

The biggest Lena’s asset is the patio… The view from there is beyond imagination and I believe Lena’s has the best position in Oia. It has 360 degree view of caldera and is in the middle of the town, yet it is very quiet. There are no words to describe the view. You have to see it… I posted some picks here. From our patio I counted 5 bell towers and 4 blue domes. This all is seen just by turning your head around – no need to get up… It is also on the right altitude. It is not too high – so only a few of the most adventurous ones from tourist herds descend there to take a picture, and locals going to church or a local priest and a few tourists who lives in houses below… It is not too low ether as more down – the view is not as good and getting up to the Main Street becomes less pleasant.

It is not for those who like pampering, extra attention and services. It is for those who prefer to be one-on-one with unique out-of-this-world beauty. It is also unbelievably romantic…
There are few flaws to Lena’s - shocker shower, paper thin linens, mismatched towels, and generally speaking décor is a bit too rustic even for a cave house… In my opinion it would benefit from an update, maybe getting rid of some old dusty stuff. Often less is more…
Overall we were very happy with our choice. Lena’s House pictures which are on most of the Santorini's postcards and calendars remind us of wonderful time we spent there.

My wife and I stayed at Lena's house for 4nights during the first week of September.
Vasilis, the apt manager/owner, met us at the bus/taxi square and took us to our studio. He carried my wife's suitcase and I carried mine up many, many steps to the main street in Oia and down many many steps toward our studio. Vasilis never waited for us, he walked too fast and didn't cared if we were behind him or not - even when we were among hundreds of tourists flooding Oia's main street. On the way to our studio he recommended a few restaurants to try out, which we did, but were not very impressed with the food or service. We found other great restaurants for breakfast and dinner in town. For lunch, I highly recommend the Gyro place by the taxi/bus station in Oia. They are cheap and delicious. For breakfast go to Nottourna which is at the south end of town along the main street, great service, fantastic view and great food. The special Omelet is delicious. For dinner the only restaurant we found that had good food, dessert and service is Floga. Their stuffed chicken breast is delicious and the chocolate souffle is to die for.

Back to Lena's house... We stayed at the top studio with private balcony and the view is absolutely breathtaking, pictures don't do justice, it was nice waking up to the view of the caldera early in the morning before all the tourists invade the streets to take pictures and just sit down and relax in our private balcony.

The studio itself had everything you need, including a TV set that didn't work but who needs TV with that view and a radio as well. The three studios do not have AC only a fan - and yes - it does get very hot all day and the fan does help some to be able to sleep at night. If you have loud neighbors downstairs you will hear everything they do and say since the ceilings and walls are paper thin.

We found the bed to be very comfortable but not the pillows. The bathroom is some what small and lighting is limited. Main thing to be aware of is you cant flush the toilet paper and have to throw it away - but this is common in Greece. The shower is very small and water goes all over the floor - it's a common European shower with a hose and curtain.

The kitchen is small but it has all the necessities to make breakfast and coffee every morning, a small refrigerator and sink. However, you will need to buy everything you want to make at the local grocery store - including coffee filters. The market is extremely affordable.

All and all I give it a 5 stars just because the view is worth the price and the small sacrifices.

Thanks to Maria for arranging a taxi to pick us up at the airport for 25 euro which was very convenient.

Overall, Oia is the best place to stay in Greece. If you're looking for luxury and modern conveniences - this is not the place for you. However, if you're looking for a good deal and good location - we highly recommend it.
