“The place to stay in Santorini”
Reviewed November 2, 2013 via mobile

We chose this place because of the reviews. It was almost end of season so it was quiet....just the way we like it. Cleanliness was impeccable!!!! Staff were outstanding !!! Views made us speechless. There are various room types and configurations. The manager toured us before we made a decision on room. A good idea if hotel is not sold out. There are 25 units. A very high end property and well worth the price I would return here anytime. We are just checking out today and doing this review while waiting for the car to take us to airport. Seeing this place in person is better than the photos. Incredible place to stay.

This place is fantastic. The staff are so friendly, polite and helpful. You are known by name and there is none of that signing of a bill after every drinks order or meal. Indeed we didn't have to sign for anything throughout our 1 week stay which makes it feels much more like staying in a friend's fabulous home than being in a hotel. It is a little further out of Oia than we would have liked but, having stayed there, it will now be our preferred place in Oia (having been several times before). You can see the sunset from the hotel rather than having to go with all the other tourists through the streets of Oia at sunset to get a good viewing spot. Food was great. View beautiful, rooms simple and elegant. Eua the manager was so helpful, and when we were not so keen on the balcony in our first room she moved us to another with a large terrace. Helpful, efficient and she clearly wanted to make sure we were happy. A very special place.

My wife and I stayed at the Kirini Suites in October and we've had a blast! The scenery is stunning and the service is impeccable. The staff is very nice and friendly. We stayed in a Senior Suite (No.9) and it was gorgeous. All white! Felt like we were in heaven :) It had a great terrace with a sun bed.

The highlight was actually the dinner. It was the best meal we've had in Santorini! The risotto was delicious!

I would highly recommend this hotel. The only thing I would comment on is that the hotel is not located right in Oia. It's about a 5-7 minute walk to the beginning of the town and it will take probably 15-20 min to get to the centre of the town. At first I thought this was kind of annoying but the walk is pretty and you are away from the crowds.

Photogenic: Kirini was indeed stunning but it had the advantage of a certain architectural style that covers the island making many hotels stunning (apart from the most dreary). The views of the caldera anytime of the day and night were wonderful. I found twilight the most beautiful when the indigo sky to the east began filling with stars while the last pinks and golds of the sunset glowed on the cliffs across the dark sea below us. At night the lights of the villages stretched out in an arc away from us along the island to the south, but closer to us Oia remained lit and really quite enchanting.

We could see all of this from our veranda, where we had a comfortable table and two chairs, as well as two very comfortable deck chairs, and a parasol for the day. One of our favourite ways to spend the time was to have a glass of wine on our veranda after dinner, watching the cruise ships leave the harbour.

Customer service: We had wonderful customer service, but again, I think many places on the island have that. Certainly everywhere we went from tiny taverna to a posh restaurant people were very friendly. If there were any variation the least friendly were those in the more expensive restaurants.

Although all the staff we spoke to were from other parts of Greece and Europe, they LOVED Santorini and were very knowledgeable about the history, the best places to visit for different interests and offered great tips on where to eat, without asking that we tell the owners they sent us--no kickbacks, in other words.

By the second day the manager of the restaurant learned that we preferred a specific table at breakfast and so he always sat us there without question each morning (we stayed at Kirini 10 days), and he also remembered our preferred breakfast. Lovely!

Food: The hotel food was very good, from the Santorini salads to the beautiful evening meals. We have dined in many Michelin starred restaurants and the White Cave restaurant is easily a match. We ate lunch and dinner in the hotel several times because the food was better than food in restaurants in Oia of similar price.

Location: it was an easy walking distance to one of the wildest parts of the island in one direction and the prettiest village (Oia) in the other. And a car rental place was across the road for touring the rest of the island.

Rooms: I recommend room 34. It is the furthest down the cliff (most steps) but that means it’s the most isolated, with the best views and it has a private pool.

Guests: We saw a lot of honeymooning couples passing through for a night or three, a few adult families, one family with teens, and several middle aged couples like us just relaxing for a week.

I would NOT recommend this hotel for families with young children. Too many steps with too few guard rails and not enough for little ones to do.

Shuttle to and from the airport: We have a free shuttle service to and from the airport with a very friendly driver.

When to visit: We were there in July, one of the hottest times of year on Santorini and the hotel provided a wonderful oasis during the day. The staff told us September is probably the very best tome to visit so we shall one return one September!

Negatives:
- Stairs could be a negative, but they weren't a problem for us as we're quite active.
- Some of the verandas were wider and were walk-throughs on some routes across the hotel, but the majority of the foot traffic would not be going through them.
- The Spa was very expensive.
- Some verandas are overlooked, but as most people don't hang over the walls this is not usually a problem.
- There wasn't a lot of space to hang clothes or wet towels.

Room Tip: This hotel is on the side of a cliff, which means there are a lot of stairs. Porters carry your lugg...

Choosing somewhere to stay on Santorini was a task in itself with the myriad of hotels and apartments on offer, not to mention the different towns and their relative merits and although I only booked 10 days before travelling, the research was over several months - reading and re-reading Trip Advisor reviews mainly!

When I finally selected Kirini Suites and Spa I have to admit it was largely because of the special deal for dates in October giving 50% off the senior suites, so for the same price as a junior suite at Kirini or comparable hotels we could have more space and a little more luxury.

I booked the holiday as a surprise for my husband and leading up to and even for the first few days after arrival I was still comparing hotels - wondering whether I'd made the right choice. However, I was not disappointed - it was most definitely the right one and I wouldn't hesitate to go back/recommend. Everything about Kirini was perfect for us - the location, our room, the views, the staff and the food.

Starting with the location - Kirini Suites are on the outskirts of Oia, a pleasant 10 minute walk to the first set of shops and restaurants firstly on a well-made path with fantastic views, then a few hundred yards on the roads before coming to the marble pathway which winds through the town. Some people may not like to be away from the hustle and bustle of the town, but we thought this was ideal. Also, the position of the hotel on the side of the caldera is excellent for getting the sun all day long and for watching the sunset - no need to follow the hoardes down to Ammoudi Bay to watch it, you can see it perfectly from your own balcony or terrace and from the pool and restaurant area. While we were there (12 to 19 October), the sunset was about 6:45pm so ideal timing for pre-dinner drinks! We also noticed other hotels closer to the village going into shade at about 5pm, so they definitely didn't get to see the sunset and it would have meant it would be cooler when sitting outside.

Our room was number 31 - this was perfectly positioned as it wasn't overlooked by other rooms. It had a fair sized balcony with dining chairs and a table should you wish to have breakfast or dinner overlooking the sea and the caldera opposite, or, like us, you just want to chill with a glass of wine after a hard day on the sun lounger!

Yes, there were steps to encounter - I guess this is a feature of staying on the caldera side of Oia and/or choosing a hotel with 35 rooms. The number of steps varied depending on where your room was located. We had to go up to go down whenever we wanted to get to the main pool area or restaurant, but this was fine for us and to be honest after lying on a sun lounger for most of the day, it was good to get a little exercise. The walk into Oia town also required a climb to get to road level, but again, it was not unpleasant.

Back to the room. Number 31 was not what I would call a suite, but a very spacious room. The bathroom had a huge walk-in shower and a massive jacuzzi bath. The toiletries were Bulgari and the towels plentiful. Almost everything in the room was dazzling white (as was the exterior to the hotel). The room came with a TV, Bose docking station with mini iPod (we didn't try this to see what music was loaded as we used our own), a small table and two chairs, an arm chair, a fridge, a mini-bar, a safe, plenty of hanging/drawer space, robes and a full size hair dryer. We received a litre bottle of still water each evening as part of the turn-down service. Basically, we had everything we needed for a comfortable 7 day stay. Housekeeping staff kept the room and pathways spotless. In fact, despite being almost the end of the season, everything was very well maintained with very little signs of wear and tear.

All the staff we encountered were helpful and courteous from the delightful and extremely helpful hotel manager, Eva, through to housekeeping to waiters to reception. At breakfast and dinner there were several waiting staff on hand to ensure you were served promptly and, if you engaged them in conversation, they were only too happy to talk about themselves, their families or give information about the surrounds.

Turning to the food - breakfast was a la carte with a range of options including the usual 'suspects' which were beautifully cooked and presented as well as unusual choices e.g. mini Greek salad and cold rice pudding. Whilst the menu was a la carte, you could order as much or as little as you liked and keep ordering if you wished. The only downside with the latter is that there are only about 8 or 10 tables outside so unless you go later (breakfast was served between 8am and 11am) you may feel obliged to vacate your table to allow other guests the pleasure of outside dining and the views.

Dinner was also a la carte or there was the option of a degustation menu which they only appeared to offer one table per night - positioned wherever you wanted to eat. The latter had the option of matched wines, which we went for. This gave us an insight into Santorini/Greek wines we may not have otherwise chosen. The dinner was 95 euros and with matched wines (6 glasses) the price was 145 euros each. I have to say that the food from both the a la carte and degustation menu was absolutely gorgeous - on a par with any top notch English restaurant and probably not dissimilar in price. Yes, it's expensive but, in my opinion, you get what you pay for. For a special meal, I would definitely recommend Kirini.

To be honest, we found Oia food prices to be generally expensive e.g. you can expect to pay 20 to 25 euros just for coffee and cake for two in a bakery or patisserie on the main shopping street. Most restaurants charge 7 to 9 euros for a hot starter and between 10 and 16 euros for a main course and some were more expensive. If you want to drink Santorini or named Greek wines, then you will find these also pricey compared to the house carafe. The latter was around 9 euros for a litre compared to 24 to 30 euros for a bottle of Santorini wine.

We ate in two restaurants recommended by Eva. One was Roka, where we ate twice. This is a difficult to find taverna way off the main drag serving simple, but well cooked, dishes. It's worth doing a 'reccy' in the daytime to find the place before going in the evening when it's dark. We also ate in a taverna in the village of Finikia called Kranaki. The village of Finikia was totally off the tourist trail and therefore authentic, including a dustman going past collecting black sacks on a donkey! Again, the menu was simple but the food cooked to order and delicious. We walked to both of these restaurants from the hotel - each taking 15 to 20 minutes.

So finally - would I recommend Kirini Suites? Most definitely yes! And I hope to revisit, perhaps at the same time of year in 2014.

Furthermore .... a few tips for future travellers - the first of which we picked up from other reviews which was to use a Santorini airport taxi from the rank outside for the inbound journey. The cost was 30 euros and there were plenty of them waiting when our flight arrived. To return to the airport, we used a local company from Oia who charged 25 euros. We booked this ourselves at one of the tour operators in the town (Drossos - on the marble path just as you enter the town).

Also, if you are interested in wines and are fed up of sun-bathing or shopping, a trip to the Sigalas winery, which is about a mile and a half from Kirini, is a must. If you're fit, the walk is relatively easy (and after the wine tasting, probably safer than driving). On the way it's downhill and takes about 30 to 35 minutes. Coming back, it's a little longer. You can not only taste the wines but you can also have a simple meal or just a platter of breads with cheese, olives and sundried tomatoes. There are plenty of tables set out on several terraces, some in shade some not. The full tasting (12 different wines) comes with a fantastic explanation of each by a very knowledgeable employee who leaves you with the wines placed on a card outlining details such as the grape, type of barrel etc. they have a small shop where you can purchase the wines. In October, the winery is only open to 7pm but in summer, you could go here for an early dinner as they're open till 9pm.

We stayed here for 6 nights for our honeymoon and enjoyed every minute of it. We were upgraded to a wet room with its own jacuzzi which was awesome and i would recommend. The view is amazing and the weather was perfect. Each afternoon you could witness the sunset from your balcony rather than having to find a spot amongst the crowds of people. The staff are all very friendly and always ready to help. The hotel itself is very beautiful and it feels like it has been carved into the cliff face with everything white and clean. Breakfast was from a delicious al a carte menu and room service excellent. It was hard to leave the hotel and explore because it was so perfect and had everything you could want! Wouldn't want to stay anywhere else! Loved it
