“THANKS TO THE STAFF AT CALDERA VILLAS”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

I lived rm 105 on 12/8 to 14/8 .On Tuesday (13 Aug) night, the entire island was no water and electricity supply. We(staff & guests) all needed to face this sudden problems. Due to without electricity supply, I sat outside of the room. I very appericated the staff who help us to solve problems including drinking water , candles and wine supply. I know that they put a big effort on it. Thanks for the arrangment. Thus, I can enjoy the night with full of stars and silent. Also, the luggage-men were v helpful too. Without them, i couldnt imagine how could i take the luggage to the room. Overall, it was a great experience.

The staff at Caldera Villas were very accommodating. We arrived a few hours prior to check-in time and the staff allowed our group of five to check-in early. We booked through the hotel's website and the room description stated that the room can accommodate 5 people; however, when booking there was only the option of 4 people. When we arrived, the office staff insisted on charging us for the fifth person despite the fact that their online booking did not afford the option for a fifth person. Overall the location and accommodation met our expectations.

We had an amazing experience at Caldera Villas. All rooms have a breathtaking view of the blue caldera and waking up to that every morning is superb! Since we arrived early 6:30m they didn't have a room available so waiting was not fun. But breakfast was really good. It was hard to walk down and up the steps, but it was so worth it getting there every time. It was also a little pricier than the other hotels we had searched, but they didn't have availability. The internet didnt work from the rooms, but who wants to stay inside with that view? Overall it was a great experience and we'd def go back.

This hotel was lovely it was in a fantastic location, however there are a number of steps you need to climb up and down to get to the hotel.
The rooms were specious and modern, but the beds were not comfy (very hard).
Breakfast was lovely, plenty of variety and staff very willing to help.
We found the hotel to be very tranquil, definitely a place to relax and enjoy the views of Santorni.

We booked Caldera villas a few weeks before arrival including airport pick-up. The airport pick-up rates are quite stiff after comparing them with the regular taxi prices on the island after we got there (30E vs 20E). But that's OK had the driver not been 45 minutes late for pick-up after our arrival. We especially did not appreciate his lack of apology when he finally picked us up as we could have taken an airport taxi 45 min earlier. In addition, he showed some condescending behavior during our ride to the hotel, in my opinion clearly from someone who is bored with tourists and feels above them for some obscure reason. He would also interrupt on private conversations with "let me tell you" advice. At arrival at the tourist office in Oia, the same Taiwanese/Greek driver continued to explain to me what a passport looked like (are you kidding me?) so that was the limit for me. The lady at the tourist office who observed this last interaction understood my irritation and as a "compensation" upgraded us to a honeymoon suite and gave us a free bottle of wine. Now granted, the room was great, with plenty of space, a nice pool, views were fantastic with a simple but good breakfast and, besides the tourist office guy who needs to find another job, very friendly staff. We loved our stays at the pool and the views from the terrace. The walk down and up the stairs are not for the faint-hearted though as it can be quite slippery. For the newly-weds, please note the walls are thin and the windows are not sound proof ;). So overall a good stay, but somehow our first impression would not go away.

Room Tip: Ask for a private room with Caldera views

I stayed in room 102 with my mother for a week at the end of june. We'd booked a one bed suite and were upgraded to one of the honeymoon suites. This is located right at the top of the hotel (fewest stairs!) and sits above the reception area with a small private balcony looking out over the pool and utterly indescribable view.
The location in Oia is perfect, close to the centre of things but far enough down the hill to avoid the noise of anything other than passing donkeys. It is however down 54 stairs that are not for the faint of heart. Each step is sloping and cobbled and takes two or three paces to go across so you can't just walk up like you would in a house. It isn't easy, but by the end of the holiday you're used to it, but the whole town really isn't for anyone with mobility issues, I'm sad to say, as there's no-where that isn't cobbled and stepped.
Check in was simple - we'd booked the transfer from the airport which I think was a pretty reasonable price - and once we'd been given our keys 'a strong boy will take your bags'.
The room was an excellent size with a fantastically comfy bed, great shower and some simple but elegant decor - absolutely exactly what you see on their website. Wifi was fine in the room but only close to the balcony - not a big deal as we were on holiday and only needed it for the occasional facetime call to the family and to check in for our return flight. The one thing about our room - and this isn't the case for others at the hotel so check if it's a problem - was that it was described as having a fully equipped kitchenette and all we had was a kettle and a small drinks fridge, no issue as we didn't want to cook, but it that's part of your plan make sure to specify as other rooms did have hotplates and come with plates/cutlery.
Breakfast is served from 9-11am at the tables and terraces beside the pool with a perfectly adequate selection - omelette, mini sausages, bacon, fresh breads, cake, watermelon, tomato salad, cereals, yoghurt, honey, jams, cheeses, cold meats, coffee, tea and juice. Housekeeping was excellent and efficient, but they only start work at 2pm so just accept that your room might not be done until late afternoon.
The pool is tiny - three strokes from one end to the other - but if you just want to float and cool off and not to experience an olympian workout it's absolutely perfect. There's a lot of seating of different types scattered around, from long sun loungers to deckchairs, upright chairs and even a covered sofa with plenty of shade for those who want. The location also means that the terraces get sun from 7am all the way through to 6pm with several other hotels in the area having no sun from 2pm we felt very lucky!
All in all would recommend wholeheartedly and we're already planning a return trip with the rest of the family.

Room Tip: If a private balcony is important book a honeymoon suite.

VIEWS of the Caldera is amazing! We had a honeymoon suite. I think there are three honeymoon suites with adjoining terraces blocked by lattice..... so sort of semi-private. Rooms had views and were spacious as were the bathrooms. Our Suite had a very comfortable King Size Bed. Good Air Conditioning. If people are down at the pool area, the noise carries in the evenings. No Restaurant at the hotel, but a couple of hotels just walking up the stairs from the hotel toward the main street of Oia.

OUR RESTAURANT FAVES:
SUNSET DRINKS: Every night at The Pelican (say hi to Draska from Serbia, our FAVORITE Bartender in Oia!)
BEST ON THE WATER LUNCH AND DINNER: Sunset Tavern at Ammoudi Bay...You can walk toward the west end of town and take the stairs down to Ammoudi Bay. Several Restaurants there.
MOST ROMANTIC in OIA: Ambrosia Hands Down! (don't waste your time on 1800-overpriced and food isn't that great)
HOT DAYS FOR LUNCH:

Staff was friendly and helpful.

The pool isn't really conducive to swimming. It's not picturesque, very small with a plastic rim and there is no ambient music, bar or food..and it gets hot during the day there. This hotel and not many others, offer a real "relaxing by the pool" environment, and unfortunately since Santorini is a volcanic island, there aren't many beaches...take the Oia Sunset Sailing Cruise from 3-8. We took the semi-private one....THAT was the best part of our trip!

OIA MUSTS:
YOU MUST be able to walk and if you aren't in shape, you will be when you leave. Oia is built on the side of the hills. Bring comfortable walking shoes, flip-flops or running shoes...you aren't going to be wearing high heels anywhere ladies! Everywhere you go...STAIRS UP and DOWN. We like to hike so this didn't bother us.

YOU MUST PAY EXTRA FOR the Hotel to bring you and your luggage in. I promise you, you'll be waaay sorry if you don't! It's a hike through the village and up and down stairs to the hotel.
