We just got back from our all too short trip to Greece and our stay at the Chelidonia Villas was nothing short of spectacular. While the breathtaking views are one of the primary selling points for this property, the privacy and comfort of the Chelidonia Villas is nothing short of spectacular...truly the ideal choice when basing your Santorini visit in Oia.
That said owners Erika and Trioffilo (spelling) provided the personal
touch that made our stay there truly memorable. Trioffilo was a fountain of information and provided a unique perspective since he was one of the few Oia natives born before the earthquake and still living in the village. The stories behind the Villas and the remaking of Oia are wonderful. Also, be sure to ask him about his budding winery of which he should be very proud. His semi-sweet (almost sherry like wine) was a real find.
The villas are the perfect romantic getaway. We stayed in the Kadio room which was conveniently situated only one flight down from the Main street and very close to a grocery store, bakery and pizza/ice cream parlor. The location was absolutely wonderful! As for privacy,
there was a nearby Villa next door to ours that we could occasionally
hear the comings and goings of the other guests, but it wasn't an issue as we really only experienced this in the mornings when we sat out on the veranda to enjoy the sunrise and our breakfast and coffee.
Once inside the Villa or "Cave," you felt like you had total privacy.
In fact, if you shut the windows completely, it was as if the world disappeared and you were the only two people that existed. While we were there the temperature was quite warm, but the Villa always stayed cool. Nonetheless, Triofolo can show you how to make it almost
frigid if you prefer.
I will say that you should spend a day going out to the volcano and maybe another day going to see some of the other sites on the island,
but really the best times we had were spent in Oia itself. Try going out for a swim down in Ammoudi and watching the sunset off one of the rocks in the Ocean...but make sure you take your swim shoes as there are sea urchins in the area. The next time we visit we will be very content to just spend our time tooling around Oia and lounging at our Chelidonia Villa.
