“Beautiful walk up and down”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

Beautiful bay, the walk is fine is you wear good shoes, bring water and take your time. The donkeys go up and down the stairs. The water is beautiful and clear. The restaurants are pricy, we chose to eat when we got back up the stairs.

“Sunset at Sunset Taverna”
Reviewed September 20, 2013 via mobile

Dined at Sunset Taverna on September 19, 2013, upon the recommendation of the concierge of our hotel. Was she ever correct! We opted to take a taxi (not the best deal-10 euros) but considering the option of either walking down 214 steps or taking a donkey, it seemed okay. We were seated literally at the water's edge and had an excellent view of the setting sun. Actually, there were really no bad tables. The waitstaff was exceptionally attentive, knew when to check on us, and were honest in describing the fresh seafood. We shared the fried calamari (nice & hot) and the tzaziki was refreshing and tasty. We shared the house special (lobster & pasta). The portion was more than enough for two. It is a bit pricey but in our estimation, well worth it. We shared the baklava, which is the best I've ever tasted. The blend of the walnuts and honey was heavenly. Many times the honey is gluelike but not here. It was just enough to gently bind the ingredients together. What surprised us was that there was not filtered coffee, only expresso. It would have definitely completed our dinner.

The sunset was amazing, aided by the gentle lapping of water on the sea wall. The ambiance of this tiny place was was filled with what one imagines an original fishing village tucked into massive cliffs to be. Capping off the experience was the sight of many sailing ships passing by to go into the open waters to take its guests to watch the quintessential enigmatic sunset.

We would definitely pass this way again.

“ammoudi bay”

a must if you visit Santorini, especially if you are a fish lover. All the restaurants serve fresh fish. I think there are only three restaurants to choose from but all good. you may see some of the fishermen bringing in the fish. it has a wonderful atmosphere and it is lovely to watch the sunset whilst eating. You will need a car to get there.

“Perfect for swimming or dinning”
Reviewed September 18, 2013

The over 200 steps to Ammoudi are worthed, jogging in the morning, grabbing a breakfast and go back for swimming.

“Feels like a tourist trap...”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

I was warned by the hotel staff but I didn't heed this valuable piece of advice.

The hike down was really tiring because the steps were slanted at an angle and uneven. To add to the challenge there was donkey poop littered everywhere (good luck avoiding them) and I had a donkey "charged" at me on my way down. The owners don't care where the donkey goes (as long as its up) and was unapologetic when the poor animal ran into me, nasty experience. The hike up was worse especially with the hot sun continuously shining on me for so long.

The bay has a few restaurant (and thats it) that charge a premium. The view was ok at best, I mean just a leveled sea view which we can get from any other beaches on the island. Compared to view we get up in Oia and other towns, I fail to see why this place was worth the hype, money and trouble. The red cliff was simply... red? We got our tourist picture mid-way from the hike down and the trail along the cliff was closed due to falling rocks in previous days/weeks. It is still accessible if you want to.

Overall, I think the only few reasons to go there are: 1) you are having a boat ride (think Catamaran and Santorini Sails docks there) that leaves from there; 2) you "had to" visit one of the restaurant there & 3) you were driving pass there. Otherwise, I suggest just taking a picture mid way down and go to a beach for a much better experience and cheaper food options.
