“A really nice place ~!”
Reviewed July 31, 2009

I and my husband stayed at the Honeymoon cave house for two nights in July. It is a really nice hotel. We strongly recommend if you have budget , book the honeymoon cave house which is unique. It is spacious and well-decorated as a traditional cave house. The most marvalleous thing is the big private balcony. Unlike other rooms, we have our balcony not being shared with others. Watching the sunset on our own while a lot of peole gathered on the top of the hotel to see the sunset. We set the tripod and take photos freely. Facing the sea with 180 degree view while having breakfast is romantic and relaxing for us. Though need to walk through 60-70 steps going in and out the room, it is definitely worthy. The owner Yannis is helpful and nice. The outdoor Jacuzzi is nice too. A lot of people walked by and had envy eyes on you. The swimming pool , though shared by other hotels tenants, is very nice. If you want privacy, relaxing and quiet place to have your holiday in Santorini, the honeymoon cave house in Marizan villas is definitely the one !

  • Liked — The lovely room and the private balcony
  • Disliked — Wifi not always accessible inside the room due to far distance from the signal emitter

This accommodation far exceeded our expectations - it is always nice when the internet blurb matches reality. Marizan Villa is not luxurious but very comfortable in a quiet but accessible, central location with stunning Caldera views from each studio and sunsets each afternoon. The highlight however is the proprietor of the property, Giannis, who takes enormous pride in the property and is keen to ensure that all his guests thoroughly enjoy Oia and Santorini. His staff are very efficient and unobtrusive. Having access to the swimming pool is a real plus when it is so hot. The property is extremely well maintained and clean - I cannot recommend highly enough, a real surprise.

Marizan Villas was located in a quiet part of Oia with breathtaking views and close walk to the village of Oia. Yannis the owner and his wife were very accomodating and treated us like family the minute we got there. I made the mistake of taking a bus from the port to Fira and then another bus to Oia, then had to walk around trying to find Marizan Villas which was not easy! Please pay the 25euro fee to utilize the private transfers to Marizan. It will be well worth it. As soon as we arrived hot and sweaty from our walk to find the place, Yanni's wife poured us an ice cold glass of water and orange juice and offered us to sit down in their cave apartment. Then we were escorted to our room which was perfect for us and our kids with an amazing view. After we settled in Yanni gave us a ride to Ammoudi Bay to get some dinner at Katerina's which he recommeded and arranged for us to have a toast and some Baklava compliments of him after dinner. The owner of the restaurant then called Yanni to come pick us up. Breakfast was included in our room rate and there were ham and cheese slices, honey, jam, butter, yogurt, and Yanni brought fresh rolls and a plate of fresh fruit to us in the morning. There is a hot tub at the top of the hotel for gust to use which offered magical seats to the amazing sunset. You also get use of the cafe pool upstairs from the complex which was clean and refreshing. We only stayed one night and were taking the ferry the next day at 4pm to Paros, even though check out is at noon, Yanni allowed us the use of the room until 2:30 when it was time to head down to the port. He even called us a driver to bring us back for 25 euros. Our driver was exceptional, he gave us some info and history of the island on our drive back to the port. I would definitely recommend Marizan Villas to anyone as you will feel at home and love the location.

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Marizan for two weeks in late June/early July. We fell in love with the place right away: Not only were we overwhelmed by the breathtaking view, Yannis, the owner, welcomed us in such a kind and warm way that we felt we were visiting a friend.

We reserved the Cave studio but got upgraded to one of the Romantic studios (room #1). It is the smallest of the Romantic Studios but nonetheless spacious (1 queen bed and 1 twin bed) and comfortable with separate kitchenette. The bathroom is on the smaller side but that did not bother us at all. Needless to say there’s A/C.
Nadja, the housekeeper, is very friendly (she put a kettle in our room after we told her that we don’t drink coffee:-) and does a great job in fixing the rooms.

We simply loved the fact that we were able to have breakfast sitting outside enjoying the beautiful view and, most importantly, since we like to sleep in, whenever we were ready to have it. The breakfast included: Fresh rolls, ham, cheese, yoghurt, flakes, milk, juice, butter, jam and honey.
We also liked the fact that we had a well-equipped kitchenette in our studio: We were able to store store-bought food and drinks in the fridge and cook a home-made meal (Oia is pretty pricy!) whenever we felt like it.

Oia in general and Marizan in particular are absolutely beautiful. The complex blends quite naturally into the maze of traditional houses that make up the town. The owner, who played a key role in designing the place, showed us around, and we got to see that each studio has its own layout and motif.
Marizan has 6 studios (each with a patio): 1 Cave studio (level 3), 3 Romantic studios (on levels 1, 2 and 3), a big Romantic studio (also on level 2) and a Private studio (level 4). Moreover it offers a deck with a Jacuzzi and 6 lounge chairs and one deck with 5 chairs and 2 sun umbrellas. The complex doesn’t have a pool but you can use the one of the Lioyerma Lounge Café Pool Bar (check out the pics on www.lioyerma.gr), which is only a few meters away from Marizan.

Our experience at Marizan would not have been the same if Yannis wasn’t there. He welcomed us with a glass of Vinsanto (typical sweet wine of Santorini) and a plate of fresh fruit and helped us whenever he could, e.g. by organizing boat trips, calling the car rental place or giving us rides and advice on restaurants and places to visit. During our stay we got to know him better and he would invite us to his personal terrace to enjoy some wine while watching the sunset or we would simply sit together and chat.

Marizan’s major features are a) the location, which is simply amazing because of the view, its proximity to the town center and because it’s the best spot for sunsets and b) Yannis, who with his warm and charming personality will do anything to make you feel like at home.

We had the best time ever at Marizan. We can highly recommend it to anybody who doesn’t like fixed breakfast hours, is looking for a personal, family-like and easy-going environment and just wants to have a relaxing vacation while remaining independent. By that we mean that it’s actually more like renting a small studio apartment than a hotel room while getting regular hotel amenities at the same time.

Yannis and his staff will do whatever they can to make your stay unforgettable.
We liked it so much there that we didn’t want to leave…
Efcharisto poli Yannis!

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Marizan.

1) Great room: We were very excited that Yannis upgraded us to the Honeymoon Cave at no additional charge - it was so beautiful. Very spacious and nice. You are also allowed to hang out at the swank pool of the hotel next door, which is a great amenity.
2) Great service: We were pleased that Yannis let us check in very early, which he didn't have to do, since we arrived at 9 am. Also, Yannis drove us a few places that we needed to go, which was totally above & beyond the call of duty - and even offered to pick us up from dinner one night. All for no charge.
3) Great location: Marizan is in a lovely area just off the "main drag" of restaurants and shops, which I really liked. It takes only a few minutes to walk to town, and the sunset views are more beautiful where Marizan is than closer to downtown.
4) Great value: Just for something to do, we ended up looking up the prices for some cave hotels that were close to ours, to compare what we were paying to what they were charging. I was shocked to see that many nearby cave hotels, which looked no nicer than ours, were charging 400 or 600 euros/night. From looking at those hotels' websites, I honestly cannot see how they are any better than Marizan.

A few small nits to note, for full disclosure:
-The taxi that was supposed to bring us from the airport to Marizan did not show up. This may have had something to do with the fact that our flight arrived at 6:45 am, and apparently no one on the island wakes up before 9:00 at the earliest. Interestingly enough, the random cab driver we found at the airport had Yannis' phone number in his cell phone, and knew exactly where Marizan was, so it's not like you'll be out of luck if you take a random taxi.
-WiFi does not work quite as well on the level of the Honeymoon Cave, which is four stories below the entry thru rock. For those who bring a computer, this crisis is easily averted by going up a level or two and camping out closer to Yannis' quarters.

You should definitely stay here - you will not be disappointed.
