We first stayed here about 10+ years ago having stumbled on it after a bank holiday when it was closed. Fortunately (it was late on a Monday evening) the proprietor agreed to provide us with a meal and overnight accommodation. The meal was memorable: just the two of us in the restaurant where we ate foie gras entiere, cooked to perfection, warm and lightly caramelised. A delicious ris de veau en cocotte which I remember to this day!
Those were the starters to a wonderful feast which was only surpassed when we were shown to our 'room' which was a tiny,charming, detached cottage in the garden with roses round the door in which we spent a cosy night and awoke to be served a sumptuous breakfast on our own dining table in the cottage!
We had always promised to revisit le bouchon de Cocherel again and the opportunity came up on our recent return from a family holiday in the Dordodne region.
Nothing had changed from the outside - all was as pretty as before and we were warmly welcome by the son of the owner we had met previously, who now runs le bouchon. We were given the other set of rooms for the night as the 'cottage' was already reserved. This comprised a bedroom bathroom and separate sitting room in another 'cottage' attached to the house. It also had its own, private. All furnished in the charming, rural style that we are so familiar with in provincial France. Slightly old-fashioned but quaint and it all works well.
Sadly, the restaurant was a disappointment. The menu has become more rustic and predictable but I guess this may reflect the current economic situation facing these village establishments.
We had Burgundy snails which are always delicious but can be bought from any supermarket. I choe a steak from the limited menu which was not only tough but so undercooked I had to ask for it to have more time on the heat. I like rare beef and had requested 'seignan' but it was served 'bleu'...if I'd given it a drink I felt it might have moo'ed and run off! My wife had a confit of rabbit which she enjoyed. Desserts were simple but adequate.
In all, a reasonable stop with a warm welcome but it fell down on the stanard of the food and the limited menu...shame as it is a useful base for Giverny, Rouen and the Seine and Eure valleys.
The restaurant is right on the river Eure and very prettily located near the bridge which was the centre of a violent action in Juin 1940 and which is commemorated at the bridge next to the statue of Aristide Briand who was born in le Cocherel where the is also a chapel dedicated to him. There was alo a famous battle at this spot in the late 14th century...
