The views are amazing from the top of the cliffs by the church but do take a moment to look at the strange white spike! This is a memorial to two brave Frenchmen who died in a mysterious tragedy. Etretat was their last view of France.

We wanted to do a 1.5 day road excursion from Paris.

Etretat was our first stop and is a cute little town with absolute beauty surrounding it.

Stop here if you're doing a Normandy excursion. Allow 2-3 hours to explore both sides and an hour or two to eat and walk around town.

Our excursion with a rental car stated by heading from Paris to Falaise d'Etretat. Then to D-Day beaches / cemetery. Lastly to Mont Saint-Michel. Then back to Paris with a stop at Monet's home. Highly recommend this "road trip" if you're looking to get out of Paris for 1.5 days or so.

Enjoy

The cliffs don't need to be presented anymore, they're stunning and well worth the trip. However, here are a few things you need to know: First of al, parking spaces are limites in this little town, and summer months are dreadful. The further away you park, the best. Second, the cliffs paths are downtrodden, bring along a pair of walking shoes, forget sandals and slippers. Third, bring your own drinks unless you don't mind to be ripped off, prices in town are about the same as in Paris, and Etretat ain't no Champ Elysées. Altogether a great destination, that can be done in a morning followed by a short drive to nearby Le Havre or Montivilliers.

Make the effort to hike up the hill, on both sides if you can manage it.

The views are spectacular. It is well worth the effort to keep going until you can look back at the needle. We sat here for a picnic lunch, and were a little concerned a while later when we saw a sign by the golf course warning of vipers.

I've been wanting to visit Etretat for a long time to see the cliffs, and finally managed it as a day trip from Paris. It takes about 2.5 hours, on good roads. Be prepared to pay a lot in tolls. The cliffs were spectacular -- I was able to see them at both high and low tides, in cloudy and sunny weather. I would never have imagined that the Atlantic could be such a turquoise color in the sun. I walked up both cliffs and beyond for best views. The trails, which can be steep, could be a little bit of a challenge if one is not accustomed to hiking, but well worth the visit. Definitely a must to see.
