This hotel proved to be nothing special one way or the other - but perhaps the fact that it was raining the whole time we were there in August took the shine off it. We were unable to enjoy the outdoor terrace and riverside view, which probably add to the experience. Our room was a bit small and the bathroom needed modernising. The food and service in the hotel were good, but the furniture in the public areas seemed a little shabby. The location is quite good, in a quiet street only five minutes' walk from the centre.

Make sure it's sunny when you're there and you'll probably enjoy it!

We arrived without a booking, and were pleased there was a vacancy here for a few nights. We didn't see another hotel in town where we would have preferred to have stayed. The setting is quiet, on a road of old residential houses, away from the main streets. We ate here every night because the food was so good, and because the dining terrace is very attractive, overlooking a small branch of the Dordogne river. The hotel comprises a mixture of old buildings with steep stairs and different floor levels. Our room was on the top floor, and was rather small but OK. The bathroom was also small but perfectly adequate. We stayed during a heatwave. Our room had a floor-standing air conditioning unit ducted to the exterior, but it wasn't up to cooling the room. It stirred the air rather than altering the temperature - and it was very hot weather. Breakfast was sufficiently varied, and the coffee was freshly made for each guest in a Gaggia-type machine. Most of the staff were friendly and always seemed plesed to see guests, but there was also a monosyllabic waiter who wasn't good at multi-tasking, and one older waitress who didn't smile much. Staff levels were low considering how busy the restaurant was each day, and service was sometimes annoyingly slow, but we just relaxed and remembered we were on holiday rather than meeeting a deadline.

Lovely location, dining room lots of character and very colourful, bed comfortable. However advert stated pet friendly and pets stay free. We booked with our two dogs for a one night stay. When we left the room to go out for a meal in a restaurant, we were told by the proprietor that they were an Auberge not a Kennels and the dogs could not stay in the room and watch the tv. so we had to take them to the restaurant. I should add that our dogs are very well travelled and quite often stay in hotel rooms watching the tv with no complaints from anyone. On departure we were asked to pay for the dogs accommodation. The booking line said dogs stayed free, so we did not pay as we had their printed information. So if you have dogs be prepared to pay for them and do not leave them in the room.

Having said this I would return to this Auberge another time for a relaxing break, but would not take the dogs.

Room Tip: We booked through Lodging World, very good.

Stayed here for 1 night in May while travelling in the Dordogne region.
When we arrived staff seemed confused that we had a booking, although I'd booked months earlier online with credit card details and received a reservation number , apparently I hadn't confirmed (?) Maybe my lack of French when deciphering their email was the reason.
Anyway we were given a room (Guarerette).
It was a nice small room overlooking the street.
Our accomodation was part of a package (room, dinner, breakfast) although it was good value I dont think it suited us that well. I expected some choice at dinner but entree and main was decided for you - so as long as you like what their choice is all is well. The meal also included cheese, wine and desert, so a big appetite is needed.
The staff were friendly and helpful and if we had better knowledge of the French language things would have been easier.
Breakfast was very basic (bread, jam, crossiant, coffee)

A charming hotel on the bank of the Dordogne, in the mediaeval town of Beaulieu. Each room named after a type of strawberry, for which the area is noted. Our large room (perhaps the largest) at the top of the building had a window overlooking the town, and a window overlooking the river. Excellent, attentive service, Good food in the dining room or on the terrace by the river. Free Wi-fi throughout. This is a great place from which to explore the delights of the area, with its glorious countryside and mediaeval towns and villages. Very reasonably priced - we could not have asked for more. A warning - the upper rooms are reached by steep stairs, so not suitable for those who might have difficulty.

Our room "Reine des Vallees" very small, walls are paper thin lets every sound penetrate. Hardly enough room to open 2 small cases.
Bathroom has no windows and is smelly.

  • Disliked — Room size, lack of ventilation in bathroom
