Le Roc sur l'Orbieu
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 18, 2012

We loved the old chateau and the view of the valley from the balcony. Very quiet at night for sleeping. The bed and bedding very good quality. Madame Helene is very gracious. Breakfast and dinner excellent: We enjoyed visiting with the other guests at breakfast and dinner: Very relaxed and comfortable. We felt very welcomed and cared for. Spending the night there was a highlight of our trip for me.

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night recently and had a good experience. Our room was quite spacious and had a terrace and sitting room. The view from the terrace was beautiful. Helene is very kind and welcoming. I thought the "honesty box" in the common area for guests to pay for wine/spirits/coffee/tea was charming. We had dinner there and it was quite good. Homemade bread, good wine was provided, family style meal. We had a nice chat with the other guests, so if you're not a "meet and greet" type of person you may want to opt out of this as everyone shares one table. Dinner was a quiche with cilantro--light and delicious, stuffed bell peppers with lamb in a tomato sauce--quite tasty, and dessert was fresh strawberries in a vanilla custard--heavenly. Those were the best strawberries I've ever tasted! Everything was from local farms/locally sourced and organic. Breakfast was plentiful: fresh baked croissants and baguettes, home made yogurt (fabulous), and she offered to cook us an egg but we declined as we were planning to have a large lunch shortly after at l'Auberge du Vieux Puits in Fontjoncouse. My only real complaint is that the towels were quite rough--but they'd been hung to dry outside and that happens. It's an out of the way place--we didn't have a GPS--but we didn't have any trouble finding it as the roads in France are very well marked and there's a sign once you get into town directing you to the correct road. I recommend getting Michelin maps # 526 & 527 for Provence and Languedoc Roussillon regions if you're visiting the south of France--they were invaluable and if your GPS doesn't work then you're out of luck. If I can read a map, anyone can! If you're in this area, I recommend this B&B.

This place is amazing, perched on a hill, overlooking a river and great countryside with lovely views. Most unusual to enjoy such an old building, an experience
Our room was large with a nice sitting area and very confortable. We felt very welcome!
The food was lovely and the atmosphere with the other guests so friendly. You felt you were part of a large family.
Breakfast was plentiful and varied.
A must experience if you are in Cathar country!!

This hotel is impossible to categorise and is definitely not typical, simply because it is a medieval castle perched on the top of a hill (hill is perhaps an understatement). It was a privilege to stay in such a historic building that has been beautifully restored. Our lasting impression, though, will be of Helene's hospitality and superb food. She modestly and efficiently served up a delicious meal that showed a lot of skill and a love of local ingredients. We enjoyed the convivial atmosphere very much.

We had an amazing stay at Madame's Castle. We were lucky enough to score the room with the spa bath and outdoor terrace with a view to the mountains. Our host was so lovely showing us to our room and explaining how everything worked. The bed was so comfy and when we woke in the morning it was to an amazing homemade breakfast with homemade pastries, bread, cakes as well as jams and chutneys. Unfortunately we didn't get to eat dinner at Madame's as we arrived late, however she recommended a great place in the next town.
I wish we could have stayed longer, one night was just not long enough.

We really loved this place. It's hard to know where to start describing what makes it so wonderful. We stayed in a two bedroom suite with a balcony--very large rooms after Paris, I must say. The views were lovely. The sheets were top quality. The beds were comfortable. The place has kind of a medieval feel to it even though it has modern amenities--separate shower, nice deep tub, but the existing walls of the castle are nicely incorporated into the building. It has narrow little paths to the various rooms. There's a little pool with a nice view, and an honour bar for a pre-dinner drink. We especially enjoyed the wonderful dinners at a large table on an outdoor terrace. The small children had all been fed earlier, so we enjoyed the conversation with the mostly French people who were staying there and the young people who were working there for the summer helping Madame, who is very charming. My daughter speaks French quite well but my son and I not at all, but everyone was very pleasant and often spoke in English. It was a pleasure to spend time with French people. Do not miss the dinner! The food was excellent--at breakfast too. Madame works very hard at making it pleasant for everyone, my teenage/young adult children enjoyed it as much as I did. It's a beautiful drive along these windy country roads. Actually, we missed the turnoff from the highway the first time and ended up almost at Carcassonne, but it's not that far, and we found the turnoff on the way back. There's lots of excellent vinyards around, but it's nice to get away from the madness at Carcassonne at the end of the day. My only regret is that we only stayed for two nights. Next time I'm going to spend a week. I'll post some pictures if I get a chance.

We stayed for one night at this glorious B&B. We arrived late afternoon after a beautiful countryside drive through the vineyards. This place is truly an amazing experience. We enjoyed a refreshing swim surrounded by oleander and then a drink on the terrace with glorious views. Mme made a wonderful dinner of French lamb that we enjoyed outside and breakfast the next morning was also excellent and all homemade. Our triple room had breathtaking views and was very spacious. This was such a memorable experience for us. Don't miss it.
