This place full of art. At first we were quite impressed at how much art there was packed into the small room. As with most art shops in Stone Town there is a lot of choice and different styles available. A couple of pieces caught our eye but we were quoted ridiculous prices. We managed to haggle the price down but we were still not willing to pay the price that 'Hellen' was happy with. She got increasingly frustrated, looking angry and talking in Swahili to her helpers. She was adamant that the price she was asking for was reasonable as it took her months to complete the painting we were trying to buy. My wife studied art and paints in her spare time, she was trying to tell 'Hellen' that the painting we were trying to buy would take a maximum of 3 days to paint and that she was asking for a ridiculous price. It was only when we turned toward the door that she said she will let us pay the more sensible price. When we got the paintings to the hotel and got a chance to look at the paintings a little closer, we could clearly see that what 'Hellen' had done was cover the signature of the original painter and signed it with her HELLEN signature in almost child-like handwriting which puts to bed the notion that she painted it herself. Every painting in the shop had the same signature. She is basically taking credit for all of the painting she has in the shop and i doubt she painted any of the. Disgraceful. Avoid at all costs.
