“Great Location, Good Price!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2013

Having been to Zanzibar half a dozen times this was my first stay at Sunset Bungalows and if I was going back to Kendwa.. I would stay here again!

Six of us shared a room with three double beds and still had plenty of space! We only used the room for sleeping and showering but it was a very nice room with a huge bathroom, great shower and two sinks (used one to keep our drinks cool). The room had AC & a small veranda. The hotel is cheaper than Kendwa rocks next door (especially if you split a room 6-ways!) and we walked next door on the night of the full moon no problem (friends were staying there).

The restaurant is not particularly fast (Tanzanian Time??), or amazing cheap, but it's pretty good when it gets there and the prices are comparable to other places along the beach. If you want cheap food try the 'Fishermans Restaurant' which is one road inland and is literally about half the price.

The beach is beautiful, sunsets lovely and the Friday night party at Sunset is a lot of fun. No pool, but you can put a pool anywhere... you cant swim in water that clear & blue like you can in Zanazibar.

Lovely room with a huge bathroom. Aircondioning, fan and a balcony as well as a safe and fridge. Short walk through the complex to the beach front for the bar and restaurant.

It was an unexpected gem with beautiful sunsets. A great place to stay to get away - approx an hour from the hussle and bussle of Stone Town.

After days on a shoestring I decided to splash out on a good hotel room.

It was completely worth it! The room was spacious, with a very high ceiling, a/c, hairdryer, spotless clean and with a beautiful veranda on the garden. I also found the decor pretty tasteful.

The Sunset Bungalows offers rooms for different budgets. As I wanted to pamper myself I chose one of the newest on the beach, but for nearly half of the rate there were the rooms up the cliff, very pretty anyway although smaller.

There is no internet centre inside the hotel itself but there is a bar on the beach, right next door, where it is available.
The location is really good, in the centre of Kendwa beach, surrounded by different bars and restaurants, just in case you'd feel like trying something new every day.

Staff are very helpful, they also got me some shampoo.

A place I'll definitely go back to if again in Zanzibar!

We stayed four nights here, and the rooms were great, but the best part is that their beach has enough water for swimming both high and low tide. They said beware of sea urchins, but we never saw any. The restaurant was OK, although a bit slow on service. The rooms are air conditioned, although they turn off the generator which serves the air conditioning for a short period of time during the night, so we woke up sweltering each night. We were able to go back to sleep when the AC came back on. Although they say the bungalows are "on the beach" they do not face the ocean, but instead face inward toward each other. But overall, it was good.

The beach at Kendwa is amazing and Sunset Bungalows is in a good location close to the beach. There are rooms of varying prices and we stayed in the stone cottages which were a bit pricey at $80 a night but very comfortable. They have a king size bed with box mosquito net, a nice balcony as well as a safe and fridge. There are twin sinks in the bathroom although the shower wasn't that great. The breakfast was probably the worst part - horrible artificial fruit juice with some tasteless fruit to follow then an omelette and a piece of bread. The attached restaurant is ok but is a bit more expensive than Kendwa Rocks and serves smaller portions. Overall, a nice place to stay if you can afford to spend a bit more, otherwise there are cheaper options close by that are fine if a little less comfortable.

I've stayed here twice. Enjoyable. Definitely comfortable and secure. Fantastic beach. If you want 5-star though, go elsewhere.

Location - on Zanzibar's northern beaches. The beach is amazing - pristine, calm, lovely for swimming or relaxing by. Great bar and restaurant area to spend time at
Rooms - very large, comfortable. Stayed in rooms up on the cliffs. High ceilings, poster beds with mossie nets. Local furnishings and touches. Fans in ?all, aircon in some. Most have a balcony area. Good safe.
Bed - large and comfortable. Quite high though to get on and off of.
Bathroom - basic, reasonable size,
Service - reasonable
Breakfast - very basic. Fruit, bread and eggs as you want them. Certainly not that exciting.
Internet - didn't use it
Other - restaurant food is variable. Anything local (like a curry) is good, Western-style food is very average and not like home (but not dis-similar to many other places in East Africa). Easy to wander up the beach to a couple of other places though. A beach massage is nice. The lazy boys at the beach are basic but actually ok.

Overall a good budget hotel. Make sure to confirm your room reservation atleast three times as the staff have a tendency of forgetting bookings and giving away rooms to other guests. The rooms are basic but comfortable, make sure you check the room before accepting it as you may find some amenities missing. They have an amazing and very clean beach an the water is pristine with a god depth during low tides as well. The setting of the bar and restaurant is really nice... right near the beach. The food though is average and breakfast very very lousy.
