“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013

We stayed on Chumbe Island for 4 nights after a 10-day safari and it was a wonderful way to relax after the safari. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The island and the reef are breathtakingly beautiful. The bungalows, although basic, are very comfortable and clean. The food is also amazing, especially the lunches. And, on our last night, Hassan and the staff prepared a wonderful private, candlelit dinner for us. We were very sad to leave Chumbe Island and hope to be able to visit again.

All the amazing reviews - I just don't understand - all I can think of is people have very low expectations of Africa or "eco" overides any common sense.
The bungalows and main building are run down and tatty. Beds are very very hard, pillows old and lumpy and bed linen old and faded. The flies are unbearable - makes trying to eat quite an unpleasant task. I am sure the fly issue can be dealt with by putting solar powered celing fans in and better hygeine practices.
Food was fairly good - as long as you only stay 1 or 2 nights as it becomes monotonous and repetitive.
Warm beers , no ice and even ran out of coffee one day.
Snorkelling was excellent and staff very pleasant.
I felt it was terribly overpriced and a complete rip off.
Worth going for a day trip or one night - absolute maximum of 2 nights to have a chance to do excellent snorkelling.

Amazing location, great friendly staff, cute bungalow & amazing food !
Do not miss the snorkeling and the forest walk tour !!!

My advise is to spend 2-3 nights there.. only one night being too short. ON the other hand i would not spend more than 3 days unless you are really wanting to rest, the island is small.

We spent 4 nights here and loved it. The bungalows were well designed, and we were impressed by how it was planned to have as little impact on the environment as possible. The reef was beautiful, with lots of fish; we also saw a lobster and a couple of turtles. The staff were all keen to be helpful. We would have given 5 points, but for a few small problems. One was the flies; I'm not sure they could help that, i think we just hit a bad time. We also found the breakfasts a bit hit and miss; the fruit was always good, but the cooked bit was disappointing, sometimes cold, and sometimes just not good (the pancakes and French toast). We also thought it would be easy for them to service the rooms when the guests were not there, as they know exactly when the activities would be. Often the cleaner was there just when you needed to use the bathroom. These problems were very minor, and should not deter you from visiting this beautiful spot and supporting a great cause.

We stayed here for 2 nights wishing it were longer. The staff did everything they could to make you feel very special in this very special place.
They are doing a great job in their conservation work and were both interesting and very informative.
As we left Chumbe we had a feeling that we were very lucky to have experienced such a beautiful island.

Room Tip: We had room 1 with views of the sea and short walk to beach and main areas

Stayed on Chumbe for 7 nights this place is incredible. The coral reef was the most beautifull one i have seen so far so many colours and difference. We saw turtles, stingrays, reefshark and a lot off others who live there.
A lot off spots to relax on and near the beach with amazing views.
Food is buffet on regular times quality ok but after a week much the same.Staff do everything to make you feel good nothing is to much.
Bungalow nr 6+7 are the most private and a stroll away from the see.

Room Tip: Bungalow 6+7 are the best

I don't think I have much to add to other reviews, other than to say that if you have any doubts over splurging on Chumbe island, it's well worth it. We stayed for 3 days but if your budget doesn't stretch I'd recommend staying for 1 or 2 nights as well. We were able to organise a late check out as well - this isn't guaranteed as it includes use of a room so depends on the island not being full. Wasn't cheap at usd140 either but this did include lunch and snorkelling (and hey, it's for a good cause!)

Food was excellent - particularly the seafood curries.
Snorkelling was excellent, although on the last day the wind got up and visibility was so poor. I felt really sorry for the couple who had taken a day trip to Chumbe that day!
Staff were excellent, very genuine people.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 7 but were moved to room 3 for our late check out. Room 3 is much smaller thathr o...
