“Mtoni Palace heritage show with dinner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

On Friday evenings a traditional group of youth play the parts of historical figures like Sultan Seyyed and princess Salme Reuter. Mtoni Palace also presents taraab traditional music performed by a small troupe of local musicians and some more invigorating dancing of Tanzanian traditional ngoma (drum dances). The cost is reasonable and a portion of the proceeds goes to the fund to restore the Mtoni Palace ruins. The setting is mysterious and dream-like with all the light by lamps and a bonfire! The interior courtyard is used for the performance while a small buffet of delicious Zanzibar treats is served in the nearby halls of the palace ruins. The atmosphere is all very suggestive. Wine and beer are available as well as water and a selection of sodas along with friendly service. The evening is very pleasant and somehow magically transports you back into Zanzibar's Sultan-esque past. After all , this was the private residence of a sultan with his many wives, children, and servants.

“Beautiful music and beautiful venue.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

Mtoni Palace is worth the visit in itself. Few buildings are more history packed. Besides it is beautiful, and especially at night under lantern and torch light while listening to beautiful music. Locals love it and guests should too. Ask your tour advisor to help you book it, or book directly.
