Owner description: Come and discover the amazing underwater world and the bottlenose dolphins at the famous Mnemba Atoll in the Indian Ocean. We are the only the dive operator in Zanzibar to have a dive centre in Stone Town on the west coast where we dive the reefs in front of Stone Town and we can do wreck dives and night dives. One Ocean is in-house with the full dive operation and boat launching site at Bluebay Beach Resort in Kiwengwa and Matemwe Beach Village in Matemwe. Inside Ocean Paradise Resort we have a booking office and pool facility! Kiwengwa and Matemwe are located on the north-east coast of Zanzibar close to Mnemba Atoll, with the best diving and snorkelling spot in Zanzibar! Dive packages can be shared among our different locations to give more variety to our divers. We have very high safety and environmental standards.
Useful Information: Bathroom facilities, Activities for older children

Having never been snorkelling before, we weren't entirely sure what to expect on this trip. We weren't disappointed!

We were picked up from our hotel in a traditional 'Dalla-dalla' at 7.30am and taken the short journey to One Ocean's base camp at Matemwe. Bags containing the kit (all good quality) we'd tried on and reserved the day before were there waiting for us, including a towel and bottle of water for the trip.

We set off slightly late owing to a group from another hotel not showing, but we were still out on the water in good time. The speed boat took us, another couple and a family of 4 out to a reef that appears out of no-where out to sea.

Whilst the first spot was good, it was a little crowded with other snorkellers, plus several dive groups. But it was good to get our bearings - especially as first-time snorkellers who needed a bit of time to get used to breathing through a tube! It was really helpful to have a life ring on the water to hold on to if you need a break to catch your breath, adjust your goggles or even just to hold on to for reassurance until you 'found your feet'.

Back on the boat between locations we were given refreshments of chai, fresh fruit and some local pastries. Just what we needed!

The second location, just off a small private island, was epic. At points the reef was no more than a metre or two from the surface, and at most it wasn't more than 5m deep. This meant we could see a huge array of fish close-hand, including finding yourself right in the middle of whole shoals. The guide was brilliant - he didn't mind if you wanted to swim around at a little distance discovering things for yourself, but if you wanted to stick close by to him, he'd point out all the different fish to you, explaining what they were and diving down to point more closely if needs be.

The only down-side to the trip was the fact that it was so good - snorkelling anywhere else now is going to seem boring compared to all the things we saw!

A nice and professional team of instructors.
A lot of fish and corals.
We were lucky to see dolphins even! Wonderful family of 12 dolphins, including pretty babies! 2-3 meters to them!

Only drawback was the buss tranfser during low tide, quite bumby.
But the instructors were excellent, told us about the fish during the snorkling and tracked down the dolphins for us. Great snorkling at the Mnemba Atoll!

We went snorkling with One Ocean because our hotel organized it for us. They did a great job. The guys in the water with us showed us some things that I would have missed and were really knowledgeable and friendly. The staff was really good about helping with equipment and making sure we were comfortable...and we got a chance to swim with dolphins! wow.

They were very profestional and my wife, who has Scuba dived a lot around the world, said they were very safe and the most thorough diving outfit that she has seen outside the uk.
