“could do better”

Zanzibar Butterfly Centre
Reviewed November 7, 2012

stopped by the Zanzibar Butterfly Center on our way back from Josani Forest Tour which is just a couple of kilometers away. After a 3 minute informative -and really interesting- session about the stages of the butterfly's life etc we were taken to the butterfly canopy where we could just look around and see them in their natural environment until they were shipped to South Africa - which as we have been told takes place every Monday.
It is a private sponsored Center yet I believe it could have been more appealing with the addition of a video presentation and a better variety in the really poor shopping section.

The Butterfly Centre is a community initiative which generates income for local villagers and preserves the environment. We were taken through each stage of a butterfly's conception from larva to pupa to hatching stage. The guide was knowledgeable and most passionate and we were greatly enthused. It was magical to see butterflies 'hatch' in our palms. After the talk and demonstration we were free to walk in the beautiful 'netted' gardens and saw very many species of the most exquisite tropical butterflies.
Entrance is 5 dollars and it is worth combining a visit to this centre with a visit to Jambiani Forest which is in the vicinity.

If you have time this is a great stopover. It's odd that it's the NUmber 1 attraction in Zanzibar - this is due to the to project being well done, not that it's the best thing to do! It rates so highly cause there is nothing bad you can say.

This Center runs as NGO and if you have time, go and visit it. Member of the NGO will explain you the whole story about butterflies, how they try to have sustainable businesses running and hoe they want to protect forests in Zanzibar. Small donation will help them run this NGO! :)

Going to see monkeys in Jozani Forect you can stop for a while and get some info about butterfly's life, as the Butterfly Farm is almost next to it.
Interesting initiative giving some local people work. Nice place to visit if you are with children.
