“An amazing and unforgettable experience!”
Reviewed August 8, 2010

We have just returned from our holidays in South Africa and Mauritius and our 3 night stay at Makweti was a major highlight of our trip. In terms of the safari we saw a pride of lions, a cheetah, elephants, giraffes, zeebras, warthogs and more. The guides were knowledgeable and good fun too. We loved the special touches like the hot water bottles and blankets in the safari jeep for the early morning game drive, and the High tea or drinks you were offered on the afternoon drive.

In terms of the accommodation, the lodge (number 2) was comfortable, clean and spacious. Again it was the extras that made it. There was a log fire burning in the room when you got back from the afternoon drive and hot water bottles in the bed! Blissful! The food was outstanding too. You were offered coffee and home made muffins before the early morning drive, then returned at around 10.30/ 11am for a brunch of yoghurt and fruit, nuts and cereals, a selection of cold meats and cheeses and a selection of hot food such as bacon, sausages etc. In the evening there was a choice of two main meals and they were great when it came to special dietary requirements.

All in all, it was an amazing experience which we would highly recommend!

Spent 3 nights there. Very welcoming and friendly, staff did everything they could to make stay perfect. Beautifully furnished with great attention to detail. Had 6 game drives with Lazarus who was very knowledgeable and helpful. Only had 4 on vehicle at any time (maximum is 6, unlike some we saw with 10 on). Saw a good range of game and scenery. Would come back tomorrow! Highly recommended.

Luxurious accommodation, beautiful setting, fantastic food and wine, and great conversation. We stayed for three days in August 2006 and only wish we had more time. Rooms were lovely, private, and full of thoughtful touches, like rose petals on the bed and firewood ready for the stove. Steve, Lee, Brian, and the rest of the staff were excellent hosts, friendly and knowledgeable. Game viewing was amazing--zebras, warthogs, elephants, and klipspringers wandered right into the camp. Cannot recommend highly enough. We can't wait to go back.

We have been fortunate enough to have travelled to many places and stayed at many beautiful hotels. Makweti Lodge ranks in our top five. The location is gorgeous. Built on rocks overlooking a gorge and surrounded by tall mountains, one can spend many hours just sitting on the teak deck looking out at the views. We were most surprised by the attention to detail at this lodge; the room and dressing table were decorated with flowers when we first checked in and even the toilet roll was wrapped in a little ribbon! The table setting changed with every meal. The food was really good and comparable with the best in city restaurants. Our guides Steve and Brian were extremely knowledgeable and worked really hard to get us to the best spots. With only five lodges, Makweti is certainly a place that can offer lots of privacy and relaxation. It is a very romantic place indeed.

We learned more in four days following Steve and Brian on the safari drives than we have done in a very long time. We heard many fascinating stories about the animals and insects; from termites to hogwarts to franklins, zebras, giraffes and white rhinos. We were fortunate enough to see two elephants come to the waterhole one night before dinner. The Makweti waterhole attracts many animals. You will always be able to see a zebra or two in the morning.

All in all, a very wonderful place. We certainly enjoyed our stay here and hope to be fortunate enough to come again. We would recommend this place to anyone seeking privacy and high standards in a fantastic location.

We've stayed at Makweti twice, the last being August 2002. There are so many positives about this lodge. The best being the fabulous setting. Surrounded by mountains and these beautiful candelabra trees in firey red bloom. Baboons climbing the hills and listening to the sentry "barking" to the rest of the troop. There is a small swimming pool just below the lodge itself where we watched tiny Klip Springers taking a drink. Our suite (one of five) had a private balcony looking into the gorge below. Elephant have been known to wander around the site and eat from the trees surrounding the suites, great photo op! On our game drives we never failed to find Rhino around, in fact the Rhino was featured on the Makweti logo. The meals were wonderful and the table settings always different and fun. The ONLY drawback in my opinion is the lack of natural light within the suites. The suites have floor to ceiling windows on two sides (with roll-down shades for evening privacy) but the room just seemed a bit dark to us. That being said, we loved our stay there and can recommend it highly.
