This is a perfectly good hotel. Hargeisa in not in Somalia as indicated above, but rather in Somaliland, which is a functioning (though not recognized) country. There are no problems as regards safety. A two-day trip to Somaliland to see the caves as Las Geel with neolithic paintings is well worthwhile. At the moment, Somaliland is accessible from Ethiopia by land only via Jijiga, and by air and land from Djiboutie, and by air from Kenya and Dubai.

The Ambassador is the only hotel worth considering in Hargeisa. The security to get into the grounds of the hotel was amazing and a little off putting when you first arrive to be confronted with armed check points. After a day or so you realise it really is necessary and it becomes more of a comfort. We were given a suite which by western standards was poorly equipped for a supposedly 5 star hotel but when you consider what the local population have to endure it is remarkable that they have managed to reach this standard.
There is no airconditioning in the rooms but they do supply electric fans.
The food wasn't bad and surprisingly the grilled camel steak was very tender and tasty (well recommended.) The pasta portions were huge but there seemed to be an underlying flavour which permeated all the dishes (tamarind?.)
The main course dishes all seemed to be priced at around $10.00 and were good value.
All the staff were extremely friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble for any of them.
If you really need to go to Hargeisa (and I can't imagine why you would unless on business) the the Ambassador is the best and safest pace to stay.

Room Tip: Check out the price of a suite, they are not too much more and far more comfortable than the standar...

I have been comming here for 5 years now on a regular base. Thhis place is the best in Hargeisa, very friendly and very helpful staff. Considered the location this is a treat for people that have had the hassle of getting here. High standards and good deals!

You are a part of in the international (NGO) community as well as of the local / international Somali communityy!

Room Tip: Book a room out the back - the are cooler (no AC!!) and quieter!

The staff were among the most helpful and polite people I have encountered, much like the folk of hergaisa.
The food was cooked to my my liking and offered a wide variety of flavours and tastes.

Overall I feel the hotel was clean, exotic and vibrant and presents the best of somaliland, which is why I would recommend it to friends and anyone who visits hargaisa.

As one of the few people, I imagine, who stayed here as a Western tourist, I was quite satisfied. The hotel arranges your visa, local tours (to the beach and/or cave paintings, both worth it!), armed guards (required for transport out of the city). The hotel provides a free shuttle to the airport but it's so close one could easily walk. The tours are very pricey (primarily because of the fee for the mandatory armed guards) but if you're short on time it's a good arrangement. The food in the restaurant was very good and ample (though admittedly a limited selection for vegetarians), and basically every dish costs $1! Not a whole lot of major sights in the city though I recommend strolling around the university if its in session. When I arrived at the airport for departure I was informed my flight was cancelled (because my brother and I were the only ones who were scheduled to fly - couldn't justify the fuel costs!), the CEO of Jubba airways personally arrived to the airport to apologize, arrange for me to leave on another airline later in the day, and then proceeded to give me a tour of the city as well as taking me out to lunch at the Obama restaurant in town! It's that kind of genuine Somali hospitality which is exactly the reason you should come to places pretty far off the beaten path, like Hargeisa!
