“Nice resort on rocks directly overlooking it's own bay”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

The kingfisher has a wide selection of apartments to suit your tastes. Most of them with balcony, you can book the one you like from their own website, and breakfast for an extra €8, a bit expensive but well worth it. They their own diving company on the premises, which is very good value. Swimming in the bay under the resort is also nice, you enter the sea via a ladder. It's a bit out of the center but within walking distance. The town is very quiet, although with a lot of local colour and there's a market on some days worth seeing. The beach is also nice for swimming and about a 15min walk. We really enjoyed staying here. If you want to visit the weekly market in Assomada go early. the aluguers make a habit of cruising the town more than several times looking for passengers. You can then take a nice walk from the plateau down to Tarrafal again, ask at the resort, through some amazing landscapes. Be careful though and take a good walking map. It's very easy to get lost up there since there's hardly any people living there who you can ask for directions.

We had a very warm welcome from George. He and Uschi a great hosts. We enjoyed the fantastic hospitality very much.
Great location a the border of the sea surrounded by a very beautiful bay. Very large and nice room. Beds were comfortable. Absolutely clean.Terrific view from the terrace where nobody from outside was able to watch you.
Fantastic breakfast. Great variety of choices. Very friendly and helpful staff. Dinner is provide two times a week - food and ambiance was very good.
Stairway down to the bay for swimming and snorkeling in the bay. 10 minutes walk to the beach. 10 to 20 minutes walk to several nice restaurants and city center.

The Kingfisher has very good and spacious appartments - all with a balcony facing west and with sea view. The location is on the outskirts of town, it's a 20 minute walk from the beach and from the center. Service is okay, but not impressive. Breakfast is EUR 8,50 per day. A better choise is to get fresh bread delivered to your door in the morning (this is very cheap) - and then do your own breakfast using the fridge and kitchen. You can find coffee, cheese, butter, fresh fruit and jam at the TaTa Mini Market in town. Tarrafal itself has no attractions except the fishermen on the beach - but the town is nice and quiet and you get a good glimpse of everyday life on Santiago. A tour of the island is highly recommended. Tarrafal has many restaurants, some are okay, none are excellent. The best choise is always the fish of the day.

Room Tip: The Graciosa is fine.

We stayed at Rotunde appartment, which is a round appartment with windows opening to sea at all sides. On the roof there is partly shaded terrace with great seaview, two comfortable sunbeds and a table. The room has an outdoor kitchen that we didnot use (no kitchenware, but probably if you ask they will supply). The whole terrain of the resort is beautifull and close to the village. On arrival they gave us a tour through the village to point out restaturants and other facilities. Very relaxing place!
