“Excellent getaway in the mountains”
Reviewed February 21, 2014

Great location. Close to Praia but still up in the mountains surrounded by quiet.

Fast, uninterrupted wi-fi available in the conference room.

The food was delicious.

Bathrooms were nice and clean with full blast hot showers.

A previous traveler mentioned that the bathrooms were "lit by lightwells, so if anyone turns on the light in the night, your room also gets illuminated".

At least in my room, that was not the experience.

Bed was perhaps not outstanding but par for the course in Cape Verde.

We stopped here for lunch with our fellow cruise passengers (about 80 people). The restaurant staff coped brilliantly with so many people, the buffet offered a wide choice including local bean- and corn-based dishes. The dessert we picked featured ice cream with marinated local berries. Coffee was delicious.

Room Tip: We only ate lunch here, but the views from those rooms that overlook the valley must be stupendous o...

We have just spent 2 nights at this guesthouse. I agree that the views are stunning and it is interesting to stay in a rural location. We met the owner briefly and he seemed nice. The staff were charming but had not been trained in hotel service. Lunch and dinner were good and portions plentiful. Breakfast was ropey.

The room was clean and there was a good supply of hot water but it smelt damp and overall was gloomy. I think the owner should perhaps install netting over the windows so you can open them without being plagued by flies. Important as there is no air-conditioning. Perhaps a similar thing would help in the dining room as flies were a problem there too.

We had a free day and wanted to go for a walk. It was bright early in the morning and we checked with the staff if rain was forecast, given weather can change rapidly. We were assured it would be fine. It was the opposite! Torrential rain. Luckily we bumped in to a man on the road who advised us against taking the route as it was muddy and slippery. It would help to have a file in reception with some maps or at least sketches of the route and a weather report.

We discovered that Cape Verdean buildings are not unfortunately weather proof and all our hotels leaked when it rained. I did think though that this building needs major maintenance. We arrived back to find out there was a leak in our room. Fortunately, nothing valuable was damaged but it would explain the damp smell in our room. There was water everywhere- terraces were flooded and a torrent appeared in the corner of the dining room, making the floor very slippery. For the rest of the afternoon we found a dry chair but sat in puddles on the terrace. We accept it rains and you cannot buck nature. However, as a matter of good service I think the staff could have been more proactive in response e.g even offering us a hot drink/ new room (which I asked for)/ discount by way of compensation. We've travelled extensively and accept standards will not match those in Europe. However, there is a balance to be struck. Perhaps more competition would be good.

This hotel could be a lot better. The rooms have, I think, been recently decorated, and there was plenty of hot water, but the bed was lumpy and the bathroom main light was, apparently, unrepairable. The bathrooms are also lit by lightwells, so if anyone turns on the light in the night, your room also gets illuminated through the glass panel in your bathroom door. Maintenance and cleaning seemed to be problems: our bin was full when we arrived and wasn't emptied for a couple of days. The ashtrays on the balconies never were. The doorhandle of one room was broken, so that the occupants couldn't open it, couldn't summon help and had to climb out through the window...i
Service at mealtimes was almost non-existent and we had to ask for many basic items such as jam at breakfast, more bread, hot water etc. Very poor. The food at dinner was not good, though the soup was fine, and hot. Everything else was mediocre and I wasn't the only person to have just soup and vegetables, because the meat was all bones and the fish was almost nothing but fish heads and was cold. Someone here needs to get a grip (and perhaps drink rather less).
The location means that the place can be pleasantly cool during the day but chilly at night, in fine weather. When there is low cloud or mist I have heard that it can be rather cold and damp.

Great location on 800 m above sea level. Outstanding view down to the island to the sea. Embedded in local houses.
The room was very small but clean. Staff was friendly.
Breakfast buffet limited. Dinner was awful, not warm, served in a big pot where we were not able to identify the "parts".
We would not spend an other night theire.

If you are touring in Santiago Island and like the coolness of the mountain interior, Quinta da Montanha makes a great home base location while exploring Santiago Island. It is large enough for groups but still personal enough for the single traveler like me. The dining room gives a panoramic view over mountains and small farms - often shrouded in mist early in the morning burning off with the sun. The comfortable beds, cool sleeping weather and good roads make this a great home base to take day trips to other points of interest on Santiago Island. Weekends they sometimes have live music. The owner provides personal attention in the dining room to guests and speaks fluent English, French and of course Portuguese. Food included Cape Verde specialties well prepared and served with wine from the Fogo region or a European selection. Take a jacket as it can get quite cool in the mountains. Of course the Cape Verde solution to cold is to drink the local grog - also available at the bar if you are adventurous.

I can't understand the hype some people make about this hotel. The location is the only reason to go there. It's situated in the hills with a stunning panorama. In the evening, mist surrounded everything and made a surreal sensation. It however got very cold at night, already for dinner and there is no heating whatsoever.
The rest is rather sad: we arrived in low season, so had no reservation. The only other guests have been a local womens group for a meeting of some kind, some with children.
We have seen some of the rooms, most of them damp and dark rooms with basic interior and no windows or only to the next wall. We then decided for two rooms giving onto the terrace for the view. There have been painting works of the exterior going on, but the interior would have needed it as badly. The terrace furniture was scattered around and not one piece in a condition to use, all broken and in disrepair - a shame for such a location. We had to take out the chairs from the room to sit outside. The rooms are dark and poorly furnished like from a secondhand (or thirdhand) store. The window blinds where missing mostly, the moskito nets at the windows broken, the curtain was lying on the floor instaed of hanging at the window. One window glass pannel was missing and replaced by a carton from a frozen chicken-box. Only exception are the new and large bathrooms, providing warm water. Unfortunately they have not been cleaned, the cigarette butts from the previous guests have remained in the basked and the smell was bad. The sink was full of long black hair.
We had done the circle around the island and had had a long and impressive journey. We decided for this hotel based on the reviews, but what a delusion. We wanted to stay longer, but decided to leave after one night.
There was one attentive and kind member of staff, the rest was rather uninterested and not helpful at all. The dinner was buffet style only, no other choice, and it was very very poor and most items cold and unappetizing. We felt lucky to have carried some bisquits along after all. Breakfast buffet was even worse, almost everything missing (only thing present in abundance: the flies), empty plates and juice jugs and nobody around to fill it up. We had to go to the kitchen for every singe item we wanted and got angry comments (we luckily did not understand) from the staff and when they finally brought replacement to the buffet, they did not take back the other empty plates and refill them, you had to go and ask again for the next item. Ultimately something I have never experienced before. I absolutely can not recommend this hotel unless it makes big but really big improvements.
