The Novorizonte Hotel is a well located resort in a beautiful white sand beach. Although it is rated 4 star it does not correspond to the international standards inherent to this classification. As the most relevant faults it may be referred that the property in general is not well maintained as some pieces of furniture and houseware are not in good conditions. In my room the television set never worked properly with a clear picture despite the fact that on the first day a technician spent a couple of hours working on it. The bathroom had a leak under the toilet. The swimming pool area deserves also a brief reference. The walls of the pool were dirty in the tile joints and all the surrounding area is so slippery that everyone has to walk very carefully to avoid falls. This aspect may be particularly dangerous to children. The food was ok in variety and quantity but the outer dining room was impracticable due to flies.

Stayed one week in Sal at the Belorizonte in Sal Cape Verde. We flew with Thomson cant fault the flight. Make sure you arrange your visa on-line before you leave as its included in the price, whereas if you wait till you get there you will be charged at the airport.

It took a while to get through passport control (an hour), however once through the journey to Santa Maria is around 20 minutes. The island is a tail of two halfs when you travel from the airport it looks like something from Mars really barren, very flat and sandy.

However you need to stick with it and give it a chance because the beach is out of this world, miles of empty white sand and turquiose clear water, which is beautiful...the temperature all year round is between 25 and 30 degrees and they hadnt experienced rain for the last 5 years. It is windy and therefore very decieving becuase you dont notice when you are burning! We enjoyed the fact that it was windy because it keeps you cool, there was only one day when the wind was particulary strong so we didnt venture to the beach and used the sister hotel novitore where they had a wind break and a lovely pool.

Some people gave the hotel bad reviews, we disagreed with that and felt the hotel was great for what we needed ie. clean, tidy, and virtually noone there. We had the pool to ourselves most days. Apparently it was the quieter time in the year for Sal with the busiest periods from November to February and Easter then July to August. Breakfasts are fine good choice of hot and cold food, fruit etc, again the most I counted at breakfast was around 20 people...nice and quiet

Sal is going through a massive transformation and if you look in the opposite direction behind the beach there is lots of building work going on and lots of cranes. We did not hear any noise or experience any distruption during our holiday from the building work .

In the evening we eat in the town every night and used Americos great seafood and terrace restraunt upstairs. We also went to Barracuda on the beach, again all good apart from the girl got my order wrong still enjoyable though. In the day we used Creole shack and Cultural Cafe (great seafood and snacks here). The people are fine we didnt get approached or bothered, the locals wont make a massive effort to get to you know but to be honest we enjoyed just being left alone. The menus are mainly seafood so if you not a seafood lover then its probably not going to be for you. But if you are like us and love fish then its fab, my husband had a 35cm red snapper caught that day and only £8. We struggled to spend our money as the meals are very cheap.

Most activities are centerd around the beach, there is a working pier and the locals use spears and no nets to catch the fish then gut them on the pier and take them in wheelbarrows to the restraunts each day. You can do big game fishing, diving, caterams, wind surfing, kite surfing and sand buggy tours.

If you are looking for a relaxing week in the sun with great beach maybe for some winter sun then Santa Maria will be for you.

just arrived home from cape verde april 2008 the hotel staff were not very friendly. no good morning, or good evening not even a smile from most of them needless to say we didn't leave any tips
the rooms are very basic the pool area had a lot of broken tiles and were very slippy when getting out of the pool I didn't like the loud music round the pool we went for quiet rest The food was alright if your not a fussy eater ( I am ) so we ate out some of the time, if you went late everything was cold. the bar on the beach was just a tent like affair with just water or juice. Most of the entertainment was next door where you had to buy your drinks. I would go again but to a different hotel ( we were the only English people there )and a different time of year, perhaps September isn't so windy from Barbara England

We've just arrived back from 2 weeks at the Belorizonte and had a fab time! The chalet we had was right on the beach, and what a a beach!! The decor could do with a bit of modernization but the room was always clean and the staff very helpful. The breakfast was great and always plenty of everything on offer. We used the pool quite a lot late afternoon and especially liked the salt pool at the sister hotel. I would thouroughly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a great holiday which is very central to some fantastic restaurants! I only wish we'd had more time there!!

I think that the Belorizonte was a great and fresh hotel! Lived in a cabin during my stay, close to the sea and the town. The breakfast was great, the staff friendly (but the restaurant staff were a bit confused sometimes), and the room/bathroom was always clean and nice.
