We stayed at the Riu Funana in February 2013, with Thompson holidays. Like many other reviews, the Aeroplanes that use are older style, and the flight is quite cramped. The hotel itself is a nice building, clean and tidy, and well kept by the staff. The rooms are ok, not a four star standard. The food is ok, but the restaurant service is below average, the bar service and range of beverages were also disappointing. In fact the service from the staff is pretty poor overall, except for the fact that they keep things clean and tidy. We took to eating in the sister hotel, the Garopa, as it seemed to be more warm and friendly than the Funana. Overall the hotel is not a 4 star 'Premier' hotel as Thompson advertise it, more like a weak 3 star. Would not recommend unless you get a great price and need some sunshine!

Room Tip: Complain when you get there if you don't have a great room we had our room moved, as the first r...

This was our usual start of the year sunshine break and it was very enjoyable, the only issue (for some) might be that there were very few British folks staying there.
Other than that the weather was very good, the hotel staff are truly excellent and the informal style of the hotel was very relaxing. This is particularly true of the restaurants where at even the themed ones (we found the african to be the best) its serve yourself and the staff remove the plates etc at the end of each course. I liked this but my wife didn't!
We found the flight VERY cramped and by the end of a six hour flight our joints were starting to complain!
Within a few years this area is going to be huge, enjoy it now before the crowds arrive!

Room Tip: Following advice on this site we requested a room overlooking the beach in Block 5 and got one. Bloc...

We stayed here for two weeks in January, we were in block 3 room 3043 which looked over towards the beach, the rooms were very comfortable and always cleaned to a high standard.
Loved the fact that our fridge always had plenty of bottled water in the room and if you ask the girls who clean your rooms for more it was never a problem.
Food in the main buffet area very good, lots of fresh salads, gorgeous bread etc, the staff really do work so hard.
Pool area fantastic, loads of beds, pool bar fab but be careful the cocktails are strong! :)) can be quite embarrassing trying to walk out the pool trying to act sober :))
The beach is gorgeous, I could just sit all day watching the kite surfing, absolutely amazing to see.
If you walk along the beach on the waters edge it takes about an hour to Santa Maria, like many people have said on here it's great to see the little fishing boats come in( about 11am)
Have a break away from the hotel and get a taxi into santa Maria and go to ' TAM TAMS BAR 'fab place to watch the football and have a beer or something to eat, the owners are complete workaholics, taxis costs 3 euros in the day and 4 euros at night to get there
You only go to Cape Verde if you want to chill, there is nothing to do apart from sunbathe, swim, eat and drink and read lots of books......hahha finally read all of fifty shades of grey!! :)) xx
Would we go back......definitely.... We were sad to leave, great weather, staff, food drink and to cap it we met some amazing people who hopefully we will keep in touch with ...... Chill out and enjoy xx

Room Tip: Block 3 is great but try and ask for one where the balcony is facing the beach

What can i say!

We stayed last week jan 2013. When we arrived we were taken back by how deserted the island was. But once we got to the hotel everything changed. The Brazilian/Portuguese/African influenced came through in the staff, decor and food. Entertainment was varied and exciting. Everyone was lovely and helpful with any problems that arose. The atmosphere was very easy going.

The hotel was kept clean. The buffet style restaurants were the best we've ever been to- fresh and tasty food every day. Deserts tended to be very similar every day despite the chefs disguising it very well.

About an hour walk up the beach and you have the local town with all the shops and restaurants, plus the pier where fishermen bring in their catch every day. Locals are inquisitive as to where you're from, and are chatty and polite, but most likely want you to see their shops. I advise you not to let anyone put a bracelet or necklace on saying its a gift- it most likely isn't. I went along with it a few times as I didn't want to offend. Most of the locals are so lovely, warm and friendly- and not persistent like other countries I've been to like Jamaica or Sri Lanka. We visited a local children's charity that is doing amazing work, organised for free by Thomson who do a walking tour.

Loved the theme nights such as circus night with stalls and popcorn at the hotel. The entertainment crew were amazing, and we loved the dancing and the drums! On top of all this, we were able to use the sister hotel garopa too :-)

Highly recommended, please go!

There are many reviews of this hotel and I would agree with the majority of them. However, although a good hote,l it's size is probably the thing that I found off putting and the only reason that I would not go again. The Funana is next to the Garopa and although advertised as two hotels they are in fact one and mirror images of each other.
The staff and services in these hotels are good, the food in the theme resturants is better than the main resturants and a lttle more intimate, but they do have to be booked three days in advance.
The Island of Sal is very barren with not a great deal to see apart from its beaches, which are fabulous. If like us yoou like walking there are not really any walks as the land is devoid of any greenery to speak of.
If you want to see the few sights there are to see avoid the Thomsons trips as they are exttremely expensive. The kiosk in Santa Maria offers the same trips at less than half the price and are fully insured, contrary to what Thomsons will tell you.
The weather makes this island an all year round resort with such friendly people that really there is not a lot to complain about.

Had a great two weeks at this hotel, the weather was fantastic, staff were friendly and helpful, good food and in a great location right on the beach.
Taxi's are at hand by the entrance to the hotel or you can have a short walk into the little town of Santa Maria.

Just returned from the Funana after spending a week in the sun.

The good points - Everything was very clean, rooms good and suitable for use

Food was average much as expected with buffet style with the exception of the Asian restaurant that we found very good.

Drinks- Wide selection with plenty to choose from.

Beach/Pool The beach was fabulous never a problem with getting a sunbed the same goes for the pool.

Bad points Found the reception staff to be very unhelpful the reception manager in particularly rude.
The distance from block 5 to the restaurants was a good ten minute walk so if you forgot something it was a long way to go.

Trips and Tours - Did two fantastic trips with Blinky's tours. You can find her on Facebook or outside of the Funana/Garopa by the taxi rank on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30- 11.00 did a trip to see Lemonhead Sharks and the jeep safari fabulous days out at a VFM price.

Went into Santa Maria for the day enjoyed the Colors on the pier and the interaction with the locals during the Cape Verde Quarter Final match

Overall a good destination for a weeks winter sun but dont expect a Canary Island

Room Tip: Blocks 4/5 are near to the pool
