Melia Tortuga Beach Resort & Spa
Ranked #9 of 20 Hotels in Santa Maria
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 27, 2013

On arrival at Melia Tortuga we were allocated a ground floor room towards the corner of the complex, handy for the reception amenities but a walk, although not a long walk, to the beach area. The room itself consisted of a double and twin bedroom, kitchen area, main seating area, bath room and separate shower room, also as we were on the ground floor we also got a patio area with table and chairs. The rooms themselves were clean and modern looking, and just for anyone like the wife yes you do get an iron and kettle, you also get two televisions, although few English channels and perhaps a DVD player may have been useful. One concern I had before arriving was that 'all inclusive' meant a poor quality service would be provided, not at all, the meals, buffet style in the main restaurant with service in the other three, were excellent and drinks served in a professional manner, however slow at times, this is perhaps more likely due to the west African way rather than hotel policy. There are limited sun loungers, so you do need to be early to get one, especially near the pools, a bonus is that if you get to them early enough you can always pick up a spare towel, yes people put their towels out at 7am, only to start using the sun lounger after 10am. The hotel lays on a free shuttle bus into Santa Maria, it runs 6 times a day to Santa Maria, returning 4 times a day, easier to just use a taxi, €3 each way or €4 if they put the lights on. Wifi is available in parts of the hotel, costing between €3.50 for 100Mb to €40 for 3Gb, although in Santa Maria you can get free Wifi in some establishments. Top tip if you wish to get close to the stranger on the next sun lounger use the pool area, if you like to have your own space use the beach, the beach also has a cool breeze for most of the day although if you want a swim during the day it's the pool area.

Dear Reborn2006,

Thank you for having chosen Melia Tortuga Beach Resort & Spa for your holidays and for having taken the time to review our hotel.

I am pleased in reading your description of the hotel as I can perceive that you were happy with your stay and with the standard of our All Inclusive service. We try to do our best to ensure that our guests receive the best quality service possible.

As tourism is still fairly new in the island we are aware that our staff needs to continuously develop their skills, however they are friendly, motivated and they work very hard therefore I am sure that very soon they would have overcome any gaps in their skills.

Once again thank you for your feedback and we hope that you will give us the pleasure of your visit again in the near future.

Best regards,

It is touted as the African Caribbean .... not at all as it doesn't have the Caribbean sea but if you want to relax on a sunbed it is a great place - If you can get one! The wind is too strong to lay on the sand for example. The sea on our visit was rough most times on all days, there were lots of bruises lol!

Very relaxing place, everyone we spoke to (and including us) said they hadn't slept so much on a holiday before! No stress is the Cape Verde Logo!

There is little to see on Sal although we highly recommend the Salt mines! The treatments are great but even a swim in the weightless waters is good too, it leaves your skin so soft! - Mind your eyes though!

We love to snorkel and was very disappointed not to get the chance - even on the boat trips fellow travelers saw so little we didn't bother. That could have been the season though.

RESORT - GOOD - The resort is clean at all times, food wonderful there is a great choice at all meals, also several restaurants that you can book for that "dining" experience although with less choice than the buffet. The entertainment staff are great and very talented, not all the guest shows were to our taste but others enjoyed them. The staff are very nice, helpful and friendly - apart from a few individuals which you get anywhere. Rooms are not rooms but suites and are very comfy and spacious. Our Rep's (Thomson's) were very nice and helpful too.

RESORT - BAD - Tea and coffee - a machine could be provided for this away from the bars as at times (especially meals) the queue for the single (most times!) barman can be 20 minutes! Also similar for cokes and soft drinks - as they do at the Riu's down the road. Drinks menu's on the bars is a MUST! If you happen to get that individual that isn't as helpful it can be a chore especially at the beginning of your holiday. There are menu's but you have to ask for them. The local alcohol is harsh - similar tasting too lol. They do branded spirits but they are premium and you have to pay for them.

There is an issue with the lack of bar and table serving staff for drinks, in the Piazza and buffet. They are there but not enough of them! The resort has a 2 late bars open until 2am but on our two weeks it was extremely quiet after 11pm.

Pools - the pool bed situation is irritating as they are "reserved" as early as 6am, same for the beach beds, we were told in our introduction that the beds should not be reserved and to remove towels etc or ask for them to be removed, if you wish to use them - however not a situation you would put yourself in, especially on a holiday. They do have Bali beds that you can hire for the day - we didn't, mainly because they were too close to the beds and not very private. Beach - is sandy but the surf line is very rocky and as it is generally very windy with rough surf, it is also dangerous to swim.

There is a beach - Ponta Prieta - about a 15/20 minutes walk that is good for swimming although rough there are few rocks. Hard walking on the beachline but there is a path through rough land that is easier. Also a roadway to the left side of the hotel that is easier still. There is a beach bar there too for the amenities and cold drinks.

Room Tip: Upper floors have less insect problems and if you are not a night person the area around the Piazza...

Dear Sheri-lee S,

Thank you for having chosen Melia Tortuga Beach Resort & Spa for your holidays and for having taken the time to review our hotel.

I am sorry to read that the wind wasn’t so cooperative during your stay, but I assure you that Cape Verde enjoys a warm nice weather throughout the year.

I am glad that you had a relaxing stay and that you were able to get a lot of sleep here. The salt mines are located in an extinct volcano and it is below sea level, like you have said, it is great for the skin and don’t forget to take some water with you.

For those who love to do water sports, do not hesitate to request information at our reception, as you will be directed to the right places and will be advised on where to snorkel.

Thank you for your kind comments about the staff, they are all friendly and some are just shy, but they all work hard to guarantee that you feel welcome and at home at the hotel.

I would like to thank you for your constructive feedbacks on our services, it is always very important to gain insight into the preferences of our guests and adapt our services to ensure their complete satisfaction. I hope that you will return for another visit and enjoy some relaxing holidays with us in the near future.

Had 2 weeks at the melia and got back last week
We had a lovely time and had amazing weather :)
The rooms are spotless and comfortable and we had a partial sea view which was lovely, it's a reasonable sized resort but easy enough to get around

There isn't a great deal to do outside the hotel but that suited us as we went to relax and managed this easily :) we went into Santa Maria a couple of times to tam tams to watch the football but other than that spent time by the pool or on the beach

We didn't have children with us but was surprised at how much there was for kids so if you have them don't rule this place out
The pool area was clean and very pleasant and the only downside was the queues at the pool bar, staff did their best but more staff would have helped, also in the pool not near the bar , waiter service or something would have been nice

We didn't really see much entertainment as we were back at the room most nights very early so we could be up and enjoy the sunshine

For me the down side was the food but I do get unwell on holidays and am a very fussy eater but some odd combinations , breakfast were great . Lunch and dinner we found it hard to get a drink sometimes but not that bad, my husband who isn't fussy also found the food a bit odd at times but we appreciate that so much is imported that it makes things difficult

We had an anniversary whilst there and they couldn't have made it nicer , we had a bottle of cava and a lovely cake and flowers and that was lovely
Katia was amazing and many of the staff were fabulous , some of the bar staff were slightly miserable at times but others made up for that
The food and beverages manager was wonderful and made us feel so welcome, the general manager was present a lot of the time but didn't say hello to us but the f and b manager made up for that

All in all we had a very relaxing time and would definitely think of returning, 2 weeks of eating little was great for me to lose weight lol so it would be nice to see if they look at the menus but other than that and the sometimes long waits at the bar we found a great place to go during our winter

Nothing to do with the hotel but the check in on the way home was horrendous and my husband was diabetic and felt ill, thankfully Katy from Thompson was amazing and helped us out but if we did it again we would get a taxi to avoid the horrendous queues , so thanks Katy you were amazing :)

Just returned from a weeks trip with my partner and two friends.
After reading some of the latest reviews I was a little apprehensive as to what I would find
I start by saying how clean it was I don't think I've ever been anywhere as clean it really was immaculate in the apartments once the maid had been in each day ... Very impressed
We spent most of our time on the beach and beach bar it really is stunning at sunset
Please don't be put off by some of the reviews on here it really is worth a visit

Room Tip: Nearer the beach the better I can imagine the pool area can be quite noisy

We chose Cabo Verde Islands because of the climate in November. The weather was hot and sunny with a fairly constant breeze which was OK in sheltered areas like the hotel complex and superb if you wind or kite surf. However you can get sandblasted on open stretches of beach. Melia Tortuga hotel was offered by Thomson and as you can see is rated highly on Tripadvisor, a fact the management are very proud of.
The hotel provides apartments and villas which are privately owned but provide an investment return when hired out to hotel guests . Owners are allowed 5 weeks use in the year. Consequently,we were overjoyed to have an apartment with two bathrooms, two bedrooms, lounge, fully equipped kitchen and spacious balcony as there were only the two of us. There were also two flat screen TVs and aircon in lounge and master bedroom.
The apartments and villas are situated on land stretching down a gentle slope from hotel reception down to the beach, a distance of about 400 metres. The grounds are landscaped with plants bushes and trees which are tended by a team of jardineiros. The complex is designed in three sections with the main hotel reception, restaurants, bars, spa and entertainment piazza at the top of the slope. The next section 150 metres further down has the kiddies play area/pool and "quiet" pool with book library. Another 100 metres and there is the childrens pool and main pool with pool bar and Waterside restaurant. Finally 150 metres further down the slope is the beach bar , Grille restaurant and the beach. This design demonstrates that there is something for everyone here but it must be stressed that there are no flumes, etc for the more adventurous or teenage bathers.
All the restaurants can be used during the day but must be pre-booked during the evening except Spices in the main hotel building which is buffet self service. The food in Spices is varied and includes various hot and cold fish and meat dishes which are generally of a high standard. I particularly enjoyed the provision of a good English breakfast with bacon, egg (scrambled and fried), sausage, hash browns, toast and marmalade and coffee or tea. Our next favourite was Aqua, again in the main building, which served a mezze of tasty starters and then a mixed grill followed by a dessert. The wine list also provided a good choice and Gildo and his staff were particularly attentive providing an excellent service.
The animation team provided a varied programme during the day to suit children and adults. The evening entertainment in the piazza was provided for the children until 2100 and then had a main show through to about 2300. This was varied with African drummers, jugglers/fire eaters, solo musicians, bands and dance performances by the animation team. I have to say that these dance performances were the best I have ever witnessed by an animation team. They were energetic, colourful and incredibly well choreographed. They also gave a superb feel for local culture.
The whole experience at the Melia was enhanced by attentive staff who worked very hard. We found that staff who could take the time to communicate with the guests, even when under pressure, were a great asset. Memories of a holiday involve the making of friends and staff can be part of this process. The management are very aware of this. In my experience it is rare for the management to pick up that it is your birthday from the registration process which includes details of your date of birth. I found a note under our door to say that they had booked me and my wife into an evening restaurant and provided a cake and Cava for my birthday. I think this is the mark of a management switched on to the customer experience.
The Melia is about 20 minutes from the airport. The location of the Melia is beach-side but the sea is probably too dangerous to swim in. The town of Santa Maria is about 5 minutes by car and 40 minutes walking on a path. The coastal beach walk is about 1 hour. In the town are hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and gift shops. It also has a busy pier where fish is landed and stretches of silver sand with better swimming potential. The locals are not surprisingly very keen that you buy from them as there is poverty in the town, but the pressure tactics are not as great as you find in Egypt or Turkey.
The island of Sal is small but your holiday rep, the beachside hut near the Melia and shops in town will all book trips and activities around the island. There is a great kite surfing beach on the east side and a lot of tracks all around the island for dune buggy, quad bike or 4x4 trips. We did a 4x4 trip and saw most of the island in about 6 hours including fishing villages, beaches, the "blue eye" , salt mine and sharks bay (with real reef sharks feeding off shore). Part of the trip passed close to the shanty town on the outside of Espargos. A reminder of the poverty on the island. You can also do around the island catamaran trips and trips to Boa Vista.
Finally, the Cape Verde islands and Sal is considered to be an up and coming tourist destination. In our opinion the holiday had a feel of the Canary Islands, Egyptian hotels and African/Carribean/Portugese culture and was a delight. However, in any "new" destination it is often that you find building work going on around your hotel. This will be the case around the Melia Tortuga in the near future as a new complex is to be built next door. Check the impact this might have before booking. Also it can be the airport that proves to be the achilles heel. This is the case in Sal. But these issues might be a small price to pay for what is presently a great value holiday, a very good hotel on a very interesting island with great winter weather.

Room Tip: Check your room will not be affected by any building work starting beside the hotel.

We have just returned from a wonderful relaxing week at the Melia Tortuga without complaint.

Having read reviews for a number of weeks beforehand we did think we had made a big mistake. Planning for the holiday became more focused on flies and appalling food. However, those reviews should be taken with a pinch of salt.

We ate in all restaurants, having saved, in our opinion, the best til last, Aqua. All restaurants provided a variety of food, local and international, and no one should go hungry with the options available in Spices during breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The staff throughout the resort were extremely friendly, always greeting you with a smile. They are a credit to the management team.

The suites are excellent in size and furnished and cleaned to a high standard.

We would thoroughly recommend this resort for rest and relaxation.

Overall a great holiday! Had a few issues with room; air con and ants, but hotel more than happy to resolve, we moved rooms to an even better location close to pool! This room was way above expectation. Spotless, and very spacious, in fact no need to be so big for a family of 4! Added bonus to have bedroom separate from lounge area.

Travelled with two very young children, hotel catered well with kids club for the oldest and perfectly sized(inc depth) pool for a baby! Staff love the kids and always made a fuss!

Our daughter was 1 whilst out there and the hotel. Partially Keis was very helpful and arranged a lovely party for her in kids club! Staff more than happy to help- you just have to ask.

There was a shortage of sunbeds, however the management responded very quickly and more beds appeared!

Service- was sometimes below average, however a very busy period! Was sometimes served without a smile and had to wait a little longer than expected for a drink! But certainly not enough to warrant some of the negative feedback posted!

Food- not a huge choice but different every night, and cooked extremely well, not very often had chip available, very good! Easily satisfied all 4 of us, including a non fish eater and two young children!

Trips great value for money and a great way to get out and about! Melissa's free tour def worth going on, you get to see some amazing parts of the island. We ventured out alone after getting our bearings!

Would I return- absolutely! Looking to go back next year.

Thank you to Keis and the team for making our holiday /birthday celebrations special.
