I have never been to Cape Verde before but this hotel is wonderful and it provides everything you could possibly want for a relaxing holiday, the staff are all very helpful and made the stay even more special, the weather, the people , the beaches and a super Hotel is a magical combination It is very quiet and there isnt really much to do outside the Hotel but if you just want to recharge your batteries and relax you will not find anywhere better.

We have just returned from a wonderful and relaxing holiday in the Melia.

Firstly all of the staff are brilliant (from Jose the manager to the maids) and they go out of their way to please you and make you feel welcome. Elisa at guest relations is outstanding. She made it her personal mission to ensure we had a perfect holiday and we are ever so grateful to her for succeeding.

The staff work hard to ensure the restaurants, bars and public toilets are kept clean to a high standard.

We stayed in one of the amazing villas and thought we would write a little on this, as the pictures and description on the internet do not do them justice.

It had three well decorated bedrooms (there is a free safety deposit box in the master bedroom), three bathrooms (the showers are very powerful and there is always plenty of hot water), a kitchen with a large fridge, kettle and microwave (if you need to replenish water, coffee or tea, you just ask at any of the bars) and a large living area. Upstairs there is a large balcony and sun terrace. There is also your own private garden and swimming pool. We had a swim every morning as it was a perfect temperature and a great start to the day. The maids change the towels and bed linen every day if you want and they keep the villa immaculate.

It had a sea view and was only one minutes walk from the o grill restaurant and bar. We made this our local as it is open until midnight and serves fantastic cocktails. If you would like to party for longer the sway bar is open until 2am.

We are vegetarians (but we do eat fish) and thought we might have difficulty in finding something nice to eat every day. However we were certainly not to be disappointed. There is a main buffet restaurant and three al acart restaurants. We found the food and service to be excellent in all of them. The food is always well presented and looks tempting.

If you do not fancy what is on the menu you just inform the waiter of what you would like and the chief will prepare it for you. We particularly enjoyed the seafood and the spaghetti, but for meat eaters there are plenty of burgers steaks etc which are cooked just how you like them. Here we must mention Daniel at the o grill. He speaks excellent English, always has a smile on his face and provides outstanding personal service. He soon gets to know what kind of food and drink you enjoy.

The beach and gardens of the hotel are beautifully maintained and there are no steps in the grounds. This is a perfect hotel for people with walking difficulties or families with buggies. There are two swimming pools. One has a swim up bar and its quite busy. This is a good place to people watch. The other one is quiet and an ideal place to relax. The music throughout the hotel is at a perfect volume and you do not get entertainment staff hassling you to participate in games.

There are plenty of sun loungers, however we treated ourselves to a Bali bed on the beach every day. You feel very private and it would be lovely for honeymoon couples. It costs 25 Euro per day. It is very large and comfortable. You get served fruit juice, fruit skewers and a bottle of cava or wine. It is lovely to lie on your Bali bed with a cocktail (the coco locos are especially recommend) watching the amazing sunset.

The evening entertainment starts at 9pm every night and most of the shows are fantastic. You can sit, relax and enjoy being served a drink whilst watching the show. We advice you get there early, as it is always busy.

Your mobile phone Sim card will not work in Cape Verde. However, you can purchase a Sim in the hotel shop for about one Euro. The pin is very difficult to put in. Just ask the helpful lady in the shop and she will do it in a second. If you would prefer, there are plenty of computers in the hotel and you can buy internet time.

On one evening we went into Santa Maria (it costs 4 Euro each way in a taxi) to the Ocean Bar. There is great live music and it costs 5 Euro for a pina colada the size of a fish bowl. We got rather tipsy, but as soon as we got back to the Melia they looked after us and got us a buggy back to our villa.

We visited the turtle sanctuary at the Rue hotel. It only costs one Euro per person per way (just ask any of the helpful reception staff) and the talk is free. This was a great experience and we actually saw the babies hatching. We also found out why the o grill restaurant is so dimly lit in the evening. It is because the baby turtles head for the light when they go into the sea. So the Melia has very considerately dimmed their lights so that the babies do not get confused.

Painkillers such as paracetomol are very expensive out there. So e took some out for the locals and this was very much appreciated.

Finally, we would highly recommend this hotel to anyone planning to go to Cape Verde. It deserves its 5* status and we shall have no hesitation on returning next year.

Marie and June from Scotland x

Room Tip: Villa 18 is very close to the beach and the o grill bar

This hotel provides a no stress holiday, and if you are going to stay here please do your homework, it is quiet and relaxing not a busy noisy hotel. all the staff are pleasant happy people, who never look or act like they have got out of the wrong side of the bed. It rained and boy did it rain, however, it was warm rain and we carried on swimming along with other guests. The entertainment is basic but traditional to the island, the guys Christanio (a very talentented young man) and Jairson are happy go lucky and and are great with children. The Boston barman is always smiling, the food is a mixture of meat fish and salad an excellent aqua restaurant provides a more formal meal which is cooked perfectly. The grille restaurant with Daniel is lovely a provides a lovely lunch and evening meal over looking the beach. The accommodation is spacious very clean and is spaced out, the grounds are pretty
and there are some very colourful flowers. There is an issue with flies especially in the grille restaurant, which was annoying and needs to be addressed. More local information on evenings out i.e local bars would have been nice, however, again we never enquired till the later part of our trip. The hotel provides a relaxing friendly atmosphere which I feel encourages guests to talk and mix and we met some lovely people. I would recommend this hotel and resort to people who seriously just want to sleep eat sunbathe and relax, in beautiful surroundings with friendly people.

Room Tip: all low rise buildings

Dear SallyallyWiltshire,

Thank you for having chosen Melia Tortuga Beach Resort & Spa for your holidays with your friends and for the review, we appreciate the time that our guests have taken to give us their feedback which is very important for us in order to develop a service that fully satisfies them.

I am very happy to know that you have enjoyed your stay with us and thank you for the nice description of our services and the kind comments that you have made regarding our staff who work very hard everyday to ensure that our guests are well cared for.

We understand that the right atmosphere is important in order to provide you with an unforgettable holiday experience and hence this is why we try to do our best to ensure that everything is in a tip top condition right from the room, the public areas, the pools and the hotel grounds.

In a tropical place like Sal flies are certainly an annoying issue especially after the rain, this has already been addressed and we will be on the alert for prevention in case the problem arises again.

I sincerely appreciate you having recommended our hotel to future guests and I hope that you will give us the pleasure of your visit in the near future.

Kind regards,
Jose Luis Cuevas

We have enjoyed two fantastic weeks at this hotel which we chose knowing the rocks at the waters edge made it difficult to swim in the sea but we chose it because it was smaller than the other two hotels close by. The beach on the left of the hotel approx 10 mins walk away was like paradise, beautiful clean sand and water, well worth the walk up the beach which we did many times. Also we walked into Santa Maria along the beach. The staff were excellent, friendly and very hardworking. The golf cart to transport you with your luggage to your room was a nice touch as trying to find your accommodation on your own in the dark would possibly be problamatic. As it happens our key card wouldn't work and the driver had to take us back to reception to sort it out and then took us back again, all service with a smile. The drink on arrival was very welcoming too. The hotel was very clean and we enjoyed the food in all the restaurants. Also the evening entertainment was very enjoyable. The rooms (actually apartments) were very tastefully furnished, two bedrooms although there were only two of us, bathroom with a shower that worked really well, kitchen with fridge, microwave, air conditioning and flat screen TVs in the lounge and master bedroom.

We did the jeep safari through Thomson which was well worth doing to see how the locals lived as well as the tourist attractions.

All in all a very relaxing holiday, Cape Verde is an upcoming resort and I would like to go back in a few years to see how it has developed.

Room Tip: We were in room 466 which was well positioned to both swimming pools and the beach.

My partner and I stayed at Melia Tortuga from Sept 10th-17th and minus a few things and there, we had a lovely stay and good impressions for our first time to Cape Verde.

Hotel
The Hotel was very well presented, always clean and the gardens and amenities were always very well looked after!

Rooms
We were pleasantly surprised by the size of the rooms as we had a suite with 2 bedrooms, living area, kitchen and bathroom. We'd previously requested a 1st level floor with a pool view which is exactly what we got with a nice view from our balcony over the quiet pool. Slight issue was a few small bugs but nothing to worry about and it's to be expected. We also found that the thin bed sheet didn't always keep us warm enough when the air con was on.

Food and Drinks - All Inclusive
Spices was the main buffet serving breakfast, lunch and
dinner with quite a variety of dishes such as mixed fish, mixed meats, seafood, and a few vegetable dishes although not many appealed to us as there were a few odd combinations of food.
We only ate at the Waterside once for a self service lunch which consisted of pizza, chips, salad and chicken. Basic and little choice but ideal for a lunch snack.
O'Grille Beach Bar was our favourite amongst the restaurants. They provide a menu of salads, sandwiches, burgers, chicken, beef skewers and pasta, for lunch, however don't expect big portions. We also made a reservation for dinner there which was thoroughly enjoyable! There's a choice of 3 set menus for varied tastes. Again, don't expect big portions but the atmosphere at night is lovely, by the beach lit by lanterns and candles.
However, there are many flies that pester you throughout your meal in all restaurants. Drinks such a local beers, wines and spirits were all nice as were the cocktails.

Pools
There are 3 pools, Quiet Pool, Main Pool and a shallow pool. All of which were well kept and a lovely temperature. Many sunbeds to choose from around all pools, although be wary of early sunbed claimers as your likely to be left with the beds under the direct sun and no parasol. The pool bar at the main pool is a nice feature to swim up to when you fancy a drink.

Beach
The beach is a beautiful stretch of lovely soft sand (but it does get very hot!) and there were always plenty of sunbeds, all with parasols. The sea was red flagged 4 days and yellow for 3 days of our stay, meaning its not ideal for swimming and a strong current. There are also rocky crevices lining the beach so not ideal for paddling either, but none the less, very lovely to dip your toes in.

Staff
Many staff were very pleasant and friendly however some did not even smile. A special mention to Daniel in O'Grille who always made our visit welcome. The entertainment team at the pool, doing aqua gym and diving were always smiling and talkative!

Thomson and Rep
Our flights to and from Birmingham were 5hrs 40 each way with in flight meals. Outward flight was ok although there is no inflight entertainment and the return flight was draining as it was a night flight.

A very special mention to our in hotel Thomson rep, Melissa, who was always smiling, always there to answer any questions and help throughout our holiday. My partner arranged with her a bottle of bubbly to be delivered to the room for our 4 year anniversary. Which was a lovely surprise and accompanied with a handwritten note saying it was complimentary on behalf of her and the hotel and was happy to help with anything else we may need. By far the friendliest and approachable rep we've ever had!

Location/Excursion
The island of Sal is not currently very commercial or developed and is little there on the small island. However, Melissa made us aware of all excursions and points of interest on the island. The only excursion we did was the 4 hour Quad Biking Tour which was incredible if you fancy an adrenaline rush but also to view the main points of interest around the island. It's definitely a must do at €60 each for sharing a quad. Would have done it twice if we could!

Overall we had a wonderful stay at Melia Tortuga and had a great experience in Sal. Definitely a 4* and a perfect haven for couples to relax and unwind! Would recommend :)

I sincerely appreciate you having elected Melia Tortuga Beach Resort & Spa for your holidays and for having set aside some of your precious time to share your experience with us and with fellow travelers on Tripadvisor.

As I read through your description of our hotel and our services it is nice to observe that you were happy with your room, with our facilities and with our services. I do understand that insects can be a nuisance in the tropical weather, we have a routine disinfestations in place to minimize the problem as much as possible.

During your stay there were plenty of sun beds and shades and our guests can also make a reservation for a whole day on a Bali Bed with refreshments and a personalized service for a small charge.

Thank you for your kind comments regarding the staff, especially Daniel who is an asset to our hotel, it is with pleasure that I will share your comments with everyone, who I am sure will be very happy to hear from you.

I am glad that you enjoyed the complimentary cava that we sent to you, I would also like to thank you genuinely for having recommended our hotel to prospective guests and I hope that you will also return to visit us more often in the near future.

I have never reviewed a hotel before but my families experience at the Melia was just so, so good I couldn't not share it!

The hotel itself is amazing! It's clean, tidy, pretty, and although its a large complex feels like home! The food was delicious as well as being varied for breakfast, dinner and tea. The staff are wonderfully attentive, and the restaurant and food areas are spotlessly hygienic. You will eat like a king! Meat, fish, veg, bread, rice, pasta, salad, sauces, fruit and deserts. The beach of the hotel is lovely and quite (the sea is too rocky to swim in but paddling is fine). There are two pools, one with music and activities and a second quiet pool... The free shuttle bus takes you to Santa Maria beach which is an utterly gorgeous beach.. powder white sand, turquoise blue sea (the sea is a little rough but nothing to worry about at all!!) Takes about 3 minutes and well worth it if you want to swim in the sea! The rooms are large! The largest I've ever stayed in and are cleaned everyday..thoroughly!! The Thomson rep Melissa is brilliant also, she works very hard and is always available and only too happy to help! And the hardworking entertainment team were great and put on a very enjoyable series of shows and children's discos!
The 4x4 jeep tour takes 1/2 a day and is a must! It's a great few hours and you see and experience the islands must-see parts, don't hesitate to book it!! (Be mindful of the evening turtle beach walk excursion, the turtles are not a guarantee!!)

I can not praise this hotel enough. It was a faultless 2 week holiday, filled with sunbathing and swimming! This is *the* perfect hotel and holiday if you want to unwind, relax and enjoy the sun! This is a truly brilliant hotel! No question about it!
