“Exotic Getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2014

After overnight plane tripss and early morning arrival in Fogo from Boston, the Hotel Xaguate was a welcome sight as we started our days on the island. After a quick and efficient check-in, we enjoyed a relaxing breakfast overlooking the ocean.. Throughout our stay, the dining room, lounge and housekeeping staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The swimming pool is large, clean with a great view of Brava in the background. The rooms were acceptable with typical bathrooms. The front desk staff was great in recommending restaurants and arranging taxi service. Wi-Fi service is available only on the first floor.
My one warning- Be aware of exchanging currencies at the front desk. Overall, the hotel was instrumental in making our experience on the island of Fogo a most momentous occasion.

Room Tip: Insist on room facing the ocean!

Fogo Island is a very typical island with quite few touristic places but wonderful pictures to take and walk onto the volcano. Xaguate hotel seemed from far the best hotel on the Island, in any case in Sao Filipe.

Clean pool, average rooms (average confort but clean) with wonderful view on the sea from both the room and the pool.

Typical restaurant for the evening. Nice service even if the waiters did not speak well English.

I spent my honeymoon in São Filipe, Hotel Xaguate. They treated me excellently. Good Service, Best Swimming pool in the whole island, lovely staff and service. I had a wonderful time there, the room was nice and clean, all the amenities were there and they had prompt room service. It is a nice place to relax to soothing ambiente music and enjoy the sun by the pool.

Room Tip: For relaxation, security and the best hotel service, visit Hotel Xaguate, everything seems in order...

We recently spent 3 nights at this hotel. It is in a great location, with spacious rooms and has the potential to be a comfortable hotel. However, we were disappointed with our stay.The hotel brands itself as 4*. The star rating does not equate to European standards. Theoretically I would say this is more like a 3* hotel.We found though that the condition of the property and the service brought it below this standard.

There were a number of maintenance issues- the lift was not working. Luckily we are able bodied and can carry our luggage upstairs. However, there was no offer to help. The air conditioning did not work properly- we changed room twice and saw another room (which we rejected as the floor had started to subside- tiles were lifting).In each case the air conditioning barely blew out cool air even when set at 16 degrees C. If we had opened the windows instead, we would have been bothered by flies. There were only two working parasols around the pool- the area also needed maintaining- grass cutting. There was evidence of old leaks in our room- the walls had not been made good.

The service was poor.The staff seemed reluctant to interact with guests and did not seem to have received training in hotel service or in telephone message taking! It's a shame as we received excellent service in the restaurants we went to on Fogo. I have not bored you with all the other little things that did not work and which added to our frustration. Unfortunately, there was no reaching out by the staff or manager to help us, given the problems.

We accept maintenance is difficult on a small island and we tried to bare local difficulties in mind. However, we still felt this hotel and the attitude towards service fell below what a tourist could reasonably expect. For instance, if there was a known problem with the airconditioning and lift, this should have been notified to the travel agent/an appropriate discount offered and we could have decided whether to go here or try a guest house (which I believe may not have air conditioning at all). I think lack of competition is a problem.

The dining room was a bit dismal and we chose to eat out. I could not believe that we were served tinned fruit at breakfast, given the abundance of beautiful fresh fruit on Cape Verde.

You are advised against drinking tap water. Normally when this is the case I have found hotels provide drinking water in your room every day. There was no water provided at all. There are shops in town but you may end up paying double at the hotel.

Unless the problems are resolved, I would strongly suggest looking for alternative accommodation. I would persevere as Fogo is well worth a visit- it was our favourite island and the Volacano is spectacular.

Room Tip: All the rooms we saw were potentially ok.

We have spent 5 nights in this hotel. Staff is friendly and helpful. Our room had a balcony and a great view over the pool and the sea. In clear weather the Island of Brava can be seen. What we did not like so much was the bathroom with a bathtub, where it was difficult to get in, as we are in our 60's. A shower would be preferable from our point of view and also more in line with the need to conserve water.
The restaurant was very good as was the swimming pool.

fairly well located in town, walking distance from downtown historic Fogo, with fascinating views of islands in front. Rooms are fine and have great balconies. Restaurant and bar are fine but service is slow. All inclusive package should have included wifi which was problemtic to access in only parts of a dark reception.

Report on the Hotel Xaguate ****, Fogo Island, Cabo Verde

1. Stay in the hotel: March 30 to April 11, 2012
2. Recommendation and reservation: Agency Krioula, Praia, Santiago
3. Payment in advance (half board; no option for change)
4. Observation
a. Management:
• The lady director is not a professional, has no education and does not behave correctly. She does not accept any observation and does not understand foreign languages: it is impossible to have an effective dialogue with her – neither in English, French, Spanish, Italian nor in German; and when she feels guilty, she speaks rapidly Portuguese so that nobody can understand her;
• The director does not undertake any measure to contribute to the satisfaction of the hotel’s guests – indeed she is not interested at all in the wellbeing of her guests. The director is just here to cash – nothing else! Once she replied “If you are not satisfied, you can change the hotel”;
• The red leaflet “Hotel Xaguate***” is a lie and does not reflect the reality;
b. Security:
• Once during the night it was observed that the guardian was not in the hotel and that all doors were closed with a key: it was impossible to open any door! What would have happened in case of fire? The attention of the director was drawn on this severe problem. The answer was: ”No problem, in that case, break a window or the door”;
c. Food:
1) The food is very bad – the breakfast is miserable, lunch and dinner card offer a very poor choice as many of the proposed items are indeed not available: there is no F&B manager in this hotel. All products are deep frozen or from the tin (fruit salad, shrimps, meet and fish dishes);
2) The cook is totally incompetent and cooks with a very bad oil; the smell coming up from the kitchen is horrible,
3) There are different regimes. Some guest receive fruits, others not (for instance, during 10 days there was no banana available).

It seems indeed that everybody on the island knows that this hotel is crazy and should be avoided at any price, but nothing happens.

5. Conclusion
a. For the security services (Police and Firemen): I suggest the closure of the hotel in order to protect the life of guests, till all appropriate steps and necessary safety measures are implemented;
b. For the Ministry of tourism: I recommend to scrutinize carefully the management of the hotel and impose appropriate quality management improvements. The travel agent Aliança Krioula is not trustworthy: it has to be put under a strict control;
c. For travel agencies: avoid this hotel at any price and cost, until fundamental changes have occurred – among others change of the actual management. Avoid also Aliança Krioula.
