Royal Horizon Boa Vista
Ranked #4 of 11 Hotels in Boa Vista

Reviewed November 17, 2013

Compared with other all inclusive venues on Boa Vista this did seem to be the best with its low level two storey rooms, most of which seemed to have sea views over a magnificent beach. Overall we were disappointed with this hotel. The staff at Reception were pleasant enough but their English was poor and more importantly when a complaint was made they promised immediate action, but nothing happened. Five requests for our television to be tuned into English channels--- nothing happened. Other complaints resulted in the same reaction--- nothing. Light in bathroom which took ages to come on, mould on the grouting in the shower, a shower head which would not stay in one position and pirouetted down until only a small child could stand under it, a toilet seat which was too small for the toilet and moved dangerously when sat on.

Room cleaning was adequate, though the mould problem should have been dealt with by the cleaning staff, not a difficult problem to solve. Some days the cleaning was very good, some days it was poor. Guess it depended on who was on duty.

Pool area was adequate. Pool good and clean as was the pool area. Two major problems were the number of broken and loose tiles. Some of these were likely to cause people to trip or even cut themselves on some of the broken ones. At night there was a broken light on one side of the steps from the upper pool area to the lower pool area. it was difficult to see the steps and how many there were. There were also other trip hazards around the pool. The major complaint about the pool area was the lack of sunbeds. I did not pay £2000 for us to have to get up at 6.30 each morning to have breakfast at seven to be able to get back to the pool area to sit on a sunbed before they were all booked with towels, despite a notice around the pool to say that this should not be done. The fact of the matter was there were not enough sunbeds. The management need to sort this out. There was a security check on the sunbeds, the point of which was totally lost on us. It seemed to consist of a security guard walking round with a pool attendant at 8.30 and putting bits paper with 8.30 on them on the unoccupied beds, the security guard making a note of the bed numbers and then collecting the bits of paper at 10am. Nothing seemed to happen about towels put on beds at 7am or any beds still unused at 10am.

The food was adequate but as with so many of these all inclusive hotels not very inspiring. The main criticism was that the so called hot food was tepid and outside the temperature range that would be required in the UK to stop bacteria growth. Warm plates would help with the food temperature, but the hotel needs to look at other ways of keeping the food hotter with better heat lamps and some sort of shielding at the front from draughts etc.The salad bar and the sweet bar were good but not adequately protected. I saw sparrows on several occasions fly into the dining room and on one occasion land on the cheese on the salad bar and have a meal. I then saw someone picking up the cheese that the bird had been nibbling. It did not seem to worry the staff. There was a manager strutting around but he did not seem to have got his priorities right. We did make one visit to the Italian Restaurant which was better. At least the food was hot!

The other problem with Boa Vista is the Airport. If the authorities want to develop the island they must improve the very basic facilities there. We had to queue for two and a half hours on our return journey, most of which was in the Sun. Coordination of flights by tour organisers would help in the short term. The immigration staff could also be a bit more welcoming. After all we are helping to pay their wages!

Overall we felt that the hotel was a bit tired and in need of new management and we were disappointed with the Royal Decameron Boa Vista. Having stayed at their hotel in Panama a few years ago we were expecting much more. Unless we had assurances that things have improved we will not be returning.

Average scale hotel in bungalow style surrounded with beautiful gardens, filled with little birds and crickets. Very well kept pools (water tested 4x a day), huge withe beach. Booked a seaview room and got a suite with two terrasses. Nice bathroom, king bed wich was wobbly however. The remote of the AC was playing up, so whenever it got to cold, we disabeled the AC fuse because we did not want to complain about such a minor deficciancy. The rooms where clean, only the first dag we found two roaches on the verge of dying. Probably the room had not been used for several days prior to ou arrival and, given the climate these bugs are inevatable, but it goes to show that the staff takes the necesary measurements to deal with this problem. The food was a good standard and prepared in a very hygienic way (nobody got sick). This is important for us as we are prone to suffer from food poisining. A perfect 10 for the staff (all of them) : very friendly and efficiant. The only downside to this hotel are other tourists who put their towels on sunbeds by the pool and then never show. As the availability of these sunbeds is limited, this is annoying but staff tries to take care of it. The hotel puts 1 bottle of water in the room (toothbrushing), the next bottles have to be purchased at 2€ at reception. This is a bit small given the fact that the water is not potable.
Great place to unwind from the hassles and stress of everyday life.

Room Tip: Book a room with sea view, but keep in mind that they are on the second floor of the bungalows if on...

we stayed here in October family of 5 we had two room they were in an excellent position view of pool and also view of beach. The rooms were fabulous cleaned every day and a lovely size. the food was lovely had a choice of 3 resturants which have an amazing choice of dishes as well as plenty of loverly desserts iuncluding ice cream there was always plenty and cooked beautifully. The lady in the morning cooked your eggs to order and she always made sure that i had a fresh omlette. the resturant near the beach La tortuga al la carte where you are waiter served has an excellent choice of food and the staff were very attentive. the hotel and staff were so friendly and helpful. we had fresh towels for the pool every day. I saw a huge act of kindness and consideration while i was there an elderly lady who had mobility issues was on a ground floor but the step even though was not a large step she was experiencing a problem with it. The building staff noticed this so within a matter of minutes the staff had built another smaller step. the mans name I think was Fortensa, he did not have to do rhis but his careing an thoughfulness made a huge difference to that lady and i applaud him for that.
I was trying to renew my vows while I was there i requested some help in renewing my vows for my 30th wedding anniversary Thomson were unable to help and there rep was unable to do anything for us we did ask avd their negativity was disheartening
HOWEVER on hearing of our problem The Team at the Royal Decameron including Pedro the director and all the Management team went above and beyond to organise our vow renewal. Within a short space of time Pedro had arranged everything from the ceremony to a singer on the beach with champagne a photographer a cake and a wonderful meal at La Tortuga. It was like a dream come true for me and my family. everything was perfect They treated me and my family like royalty. it was a perfect day and I would not hesitate in reccommmending this hotel to anyone. They were wonderful throughout the holiday and made everything perfect.

Room Tip: our rooms were 2nd floor very quiet fear small pool excellent location room 229

arrived on the 3/10/13 to17/10/13 the thompson flight was not the best no entertainment but that was the worst part of the holiday as for the rest of our stay it was just so laid back and totally relaxing the staff are friendly and the food was of a good standard and always something for the fussy eater like myself, the rooms were of a good standard and towels changed daily, the weather was fantastic and the pool and the beach the same
pedro the manager was a nice guy and willing to talk to you, unlike some hotels I've been to the one thing that struck me was the cleanliness of the whole hotel

Room Tip: most rooms have a seaview but go for the 700's

After a stressful time in the UK Cape Verde is the place to go.
Once we landed we were greeted by Thomson Rep (Wendy) who knew the area well and knew what there was to do. We got to the hotel at midday just in time for lunch, knowing the room wouldnt be ready we checked in and went and had some lunch. Amazing food and the staff in the restaurant work hard for their money 6 days a week for 55 Euros.
Once being taken to the room by i can only assume was the Reception Manager we were impressed a King Size bed overlooking the beach. Room 326. We then explored the site and found the quiet pool however we did find this so quiet that we sat round the main pool.
The entertainers are fantastic and try and communicate with you even though they cannot speak good english. They do activities throughout the day, dancing in the evening and are always happy. They work very hard.
We are rebooking for next year as we have been to many places like this and Dominican Republic and this hotel beats them all for Service, Relaxation and Scenery.

Room Tip: We had room 326 and couldnt fault it overlooking the beach in the quiet area but not to far from mai...

Arrived at this Hotel on 3/10/13-17/10/13
Lets get the bad bit out of the way first THOMSONS FLIGHT 6hrs on a plane with no entertainment not even music, no hot drink with the meal you have previously purchased they say
the reason for these 2 factors is because it is a short haul plane apparently they can't land anything bigger at Boa vista airport what a load of TOSH the tv screens are still on the plane & they will quite happily sell you hot drinks before & after your meal just 2 more ways of saving & making money i presume
Now lets get to the good bit THE HOTEL situated on a lovely sandy beach that stretches for miles be careful of the waves some days they can be quite high but hey it is in the middle of the atlantic after all, thehotel is fairly well situated for sal rei only 10 euro's eachway no matter how many are in the taxi do as we did & share your taxi with others
FOOD-always plenty of choice & hot
DRINKS-the alchohol is of a good quality unlike a lot of All Inclusives also a good variety of soft drinks, tea & coffee available
ROOMS-large bedroom with a very large king size bed + flat screen tv(if you have a usb memory stick put some films on it as it plugs into the side of the tv) most of the channels on the tv are foreign, the bathroom is also of a good size even has a bidet installed, the room we had also had a large living room attached at no extra cost
STAFF-in general very pleasant & polite some could do with a slightly better understanding of english
ENTERTAINMENT-on a whole very good but unfortunately mainly in french possibly because most of the holidaymakers are french but don't let this put you off as most of the entertainment consists of dancing.the entertainment staff around the pool area during the day are very good they don't get in your face to do things, a simple no & they would leave you alone
There are quite a lot of big black beetles around the whole area but i don't think this can be helped on a whole the place is very clean & tidy
Anyone thinking of staying in 1 of the RIU hotels i would think again because believe me the ROYAL DECAMERON will take some beating for the price & anyone staying @ royal decameron i hope you have as good a time as my wife friends & i did

I’m not really sure where to begin with my review of the Royal Decameron hotel so I will start with our arrival.
After being met by Wendy the Thomson rep (who I must say was wonderful, helpful and none of my issues were her fault) we were transferred to the hotel in a matter of minutes. There were ten of us from our flight. The scene that greeted us was not what I expected, When we have stayed All Inclusive in 4 star resorts before we have been met with drinks and cooling towels etc not by shoved bits of paper and pens and a swarm of flies. After paying another 40 euro's for the two of us to stay in the 4 star all inclusive we were waved in the general direction of our room which we eventually found.
(Please see attached photos) On entering our room it at first looked fine, big spacious and the AC worked. The two electrical sockets hanging out of the wall were a bit of a worry with wires hanging out and no faceplate on them. The inch gap beneath the front door which let large beetles and roaches come and go as they pleased was eventually fixed by myself using elastoplast tape.
For a 4 star resort you would have thought that coffee and tea making facilities would be a given but none of that either, 1 bottle of water was complimentary but then you had to pay 2 euro's for every other bottle you wanted.
You can get free bottled water in any famine relief centre in Africa but not the All Inclusive Royal Decameron.
The safe was 2 euro's per night and you might have managed to fit your wallet inside but not much else.
Maybe cleaning the dead bugs from behind the bathroom light fitting may have helped it towards a 4 star feel but that wasn’t done during our 2 week stay either. The ALL INCLUSIVE didn't really include much that you would expect as standard to be honest.
Health and safety isn't something that I think the management understand too well at this resort and on the third I badly twisted my knee when I slipped by the pool (a common occurrence I am told) which meant walking down onto the beach at the North end of the resort was a bit precarious with a dodgy knee as can be seen by the photos of the rubble strewn path.
I could have limped up to the pool and sat around the pool had it not been for the thumping loud music from ten in the morning to 21.30 hours at night. Coupled with the loose tiles and an obnoxiously loud French/Italian activities team one of which meowed like a cat at you and another that made this boooop boooop sound at the top of his voice sounding like some long lost extinct bird of paradise. After three days of this I can assure you the pope would find a use for 50 Cal sniper rifle.
The slippery surface signs were actually there but were used to block your entrance to the lift when it stopped working.
So the beach it was, and a lovely beach too even if you did get sand blasted on occasion but no swimming when we were there as the waves or currents were too strong and the jelly fish were ever present.
The weather was fantastic and the food was OK although none of it really seemed to go together. The Italian themed restaurant was very good and meant you didn't need to experience the bun fight in the main food hall either but it booked up quickly.
The bar staff by the lobby were very good and friendly as were the gardeners etc who worked very hard to keep the gardens immaculate.
Just a shame the management were too busy patrolling the drink stations like SS officers policing the "don’t fill your water bottle from the tap policy" which many people worked around by standing there for 5 minutes filling a small glass and pouring it into the bottles.
Tips for anybody going here who is not French or Italian speaking would be to take citronella candles or burners with you to keep the flies at bay, get up at 06.45 hours every day to change your beach towel at the gym and reserve a sun bed on the beach. Don’t bother reserving one at the pool as the sun bed police will remove your stuff and bag it up leaving it at reception where you have to pay 20 euro's to get it back if you leave it too long.
In general for the four figure price tag this resort is a very big letdown, but the weather is great and most of the staff are quite friendly.
