This hotel does not deserve the bad reviews. It is not perfect, but is on a par with hotels we have stayed at in other developing countries. Large rooms, which were cleaned daily. Food was good.

I cannot understand why anybody would give this hotel anything above a one rating. The room I was given was dirty and the whole of the hotel is dated and not anywhere near a 4*. I only actually stayed in it for a couple of hours before moving to the Iberostar next door, the restaurant had birds flying all around the food which looked dried out and unappealing. Not many of the staff were very friendly either. I booked with Thomas Cook, the flight is boring due to no entertainment and the rep was certainly not the most helpful I have ever come across, I felt completely ripped off by having to pay around £95 cancellation fee to the Decameron and around £380 to Thomas Cook for the Iberostar (a big chunk was an admin fee). The hotel is not worth going to and Thomas Cook are not the best travel agents.

Room Tip: Go to the Iberostar instead.

Just got back after 2 glorious weeks and yes I’ve read most of the reports on here and to be fair they are all correct.
It’s not what Boa Vista has to offer you but what you can get from it. Yes the sand does blast you on the beach but only once during our stay and you have to grab your pool lounges prior to 7am so we always went to the beach. Get the striped towels they’re much bigger.
We did the walk on the beach in both directions, north is easy to the chimney, south is hard, very long distance in difficult sandy conditions with the wind in your face on the way back. The dunes were easier to reach and looked fantastic, never seen anything like it.
The food was varied and I’m a fussy eater but managed not to go hungry and yes it’s not piping hot. We went to the LaTortuga at lunch time and found it more comfortable.
The rooms are large with a massive bed and very clean as with the whole of the complex. It would benefit from a make over but I’ve stayed in a lot worse.
All the staff was very friendly and helpful and we weren’t made to feel second best to the French. Mamadoo was head chef and very helpful, he acquired a phone charger for my wife that we’d forgotten to pack.
The shows we saw were quite good and multi-lingual.
We stayed in room 605 which was close to everything, though some apartments did seem a long way off.
We went for a relaxing holiday which is what we got, there are things to do and places to visit, we did the catamaran trip and saw the whales and also did an excursion on the quads to the ship wreck. Bit pricey though, 55 euros for the 2 hour quad excursion and 47 euros each for the boat.
The Island is very windy and this made for a very turbulent landing and take-off.
We heard of complaints about seating allocation on the plane and it’s truly bad, splitting couples and families up, but this may be Thomas Cook’s way of making you pay for pre-booked seats.
The flights are 6 hours with no entertainment and un-comfy seats; we’ve flown with Arab Emirates for the same length of time and had all the entertainment and complimentary drinks and food, much better airline.
The trick with the safe didn’t work as the previous occupants left it locked, but at 2 euros a day worth it when a couple we met reckon they had £300 go missing.
Yes there are mosquitos and they did bite.

Hotel and staff very good ,if you want a beach holiday you have it here. .if you like outside night life shops etc there is none. when we visited you could see the whales passing by and osprey hunting along the sea front.
A lot of kite surfing going on as it is windy !!! and the beach was mainly red flag, water warm and clean.
Food good and bars very good entertainment limited .

Hot weather everyday, clean, good food and loads of it. Beach and staff was immaculate. Entertainment if you want it, not if you don't. Not a lot to do in the area as it's being developed, and bit of a nightmare getting a bed by the pool. But that is really the only negative. For a hot beach holiday to chill in the winter this is just fine

Just spent 2 weeks at Royal Decameron and enjoyed every bit of it.
We did manage to get a sunbed by the pool on Friday as this is when all the French and quite a lot of English go home, could not be bothered to get up at dawn for one on the other days.
Around the main pool there were only 92 sunbeds, 10 x 4 poster beds and about 2 dozen plastic sunbeds with no shade. not a lot give the size of the hotel, did not bother counting the beds around the adult pool.
The pool was cold but once you got in and started swimming it was fine.
However there were always beds on the beach and the sand blasting was no great problem, do listen about taking high factor sun cream.
We had 3 amber flags during the 2 weeks we were there but we are only really 'paddlers' so this was no problem to us.
The room was clean and towels and bedding were changed regularly.
My husband is a fussy eater and did not really struggle to fine things to eat, however we did eat at the al acarte 3 times as they did steak.
Other than going for walks on the beach there is nowhere else to go but there are plenty of activities at the hotel, tennis, archery, water polo, aqua aerobics, beach volley ball, football, early evening entertainment, mid evening entertainment and a disco till 2am.
We did go to Sal Rei and found yes you were pestered but if you firmly said no and kept walking they left you alone.
We took Euros so had no problem but it is correct that the hotels and the whole island only take Visa and the reps only take cash. Escudos is a closed currency so any left over at the end of your holiday must be used or exchanged on the island you will not be able to exchange them once back home.
We read the reviews and took batteries for the safe but they have got wise to this and when you get there the safes are closed but they will come and open them once you agree to pay the 2 Euros.
We did refill our bottle with water when necessary and they don't seem to mind this.
We were in a suite right on the beach front spectacular scene what a lovely beach.
Boa Vista will not stay an unspoilt destination for long so if a very nice chilled out holiday is for you Boa Vista is ideal.

Room Tip: views from beach front suites spectacular but further away from the main part of the hotel.

Just returned from a weeks holiday at the Decameron Hotel in Boa Vista. In summary, it was a fantastic week - just the place to relax. Having read some other reviews, I was slightly apprehensive about the hotel, but many of these reviews are in my opinion inaccurate and where people have clearly not understood where they are holidaying. Hope the following helps.
1. This is the place to go for a relaxing time. There is nothing much to do outside of the hotel. If you want activities out of the resort, don't go.....go to the Canaries!
2. The hotel is located right on the beach front. It is a 5 minute walk from your room to the sea at the very most. The beach is perfect. White sand, clean and empty!
3. The pools are clean (salt water) but cold due to the sea breeze.
4. The sea breeze can be brisk but is very cooling when the sun is at its strongest......as others have warned, be careful as you will get burnt without knowing it.
5. Sun loungers around the pool do get 'reserved' by 7am.....same as in a lot of other hotels. If you want one get up early!! It's not right but this is how it is....no point in moaning about it. Or go to the beach. There are plenty of loungers available on the beach. Don't forget to get mats for loungers at the same time as you get your beach towels from the hut next to the beach bar/cafe.
6. Rooms are very clean and tidy. Not 5 star or even 4 star in design or fitting out but then you don't spend much time in the rooms. The bedrooms are well thought out and furnished though. Rooms are cleaned each day, with fresh towels and bedding. Spot on. Safes are 2 euros a day - just speak to reception to get this opened and then follow the instructions! Tv - in case you worry - is mainly French and Portuguese/Spanish... Sky News is the only English channel!!
7. Don't drink tap water. Water is readily available from all the bars and restaurants - you can top up your bottles as much as you like.
8. Staff are friendly and more than keen to help and give a fab service. English isn't well spoken but you can get by. Perhaps try and practice your Spanish or French!
9. The hotel guests are mainly French with some guests also from Germany and Italy. About 10% are English....again if you want everything to be English speaking and convenient then font bother going to either this hotel or Cape Verde.
10. The Animation team are French. Despite previous comments they were totally harmless and left you alone if you didn't want to take part in any activities. Activities are open to all guests regardless of nationality.... which again is contrary to previous reviews.
11. The food choice is extensive and is to s high quality. It's not fish and chips, but there is always a good selection including fresh pasta and pizza made in front of you. Hygiene is also to a high standard with many of the staff in the restaurant wearing masks over their mouths. I agree with one of the previous reviews that having cats and birds accessing the restaurant isnt ideal but it wasn't something to complain about and didn't detract from the quality of the dining experience.
12. If you have kids (my kids are 6 & 12) - then they are well catered for. Worst case and you have a fussy eater...... toast, coco pops for breakfast, chips are available all day at the beach bar/cafe as well as being available in the restaurant at lunch and dinner. Ice cream in the restaurant from 12 midday (get there at 12 or it runs out quickly). I'm sure you will find something for them to live off.

It's a great hotel for a relaxing time. There's little to do but that's the point of Cape Verde. Enjoy whilst you can, as it won't remain unspoilt for much longer.
