“Hotel is not a 5 star hotel more like a 4 star.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013 via mobile

We picked the island of Boa Vista for a special wedding anniversary trip .The island is beautiful and very unspoilt .The hotel was a 3 and 1/2 minute trip from airport .A very well executed check in .we had a drink then went to find our room .when we got to room we had been put in a twin family room .My husband was not happy ,back to reception ,found Wendy the thompson rep who sorted it for us Bag s taken to new room ... Happy .The hotel is lovely as is the scenery ,the ideal place to chill which we did.We did the thompson walk which we were told was an hour and a half .Off we went walking along the beach there were some older people in the party ,we arrived at a beach bar for drink to be told it's closed so we had to walk for another half an hour which was hard work in very intense heat .when we arrived in Sal rei ,we saw another side to the island ,the poverty !We were followed round by taxi drivers and approached by shop staff ,which was intimating.Once we had finished we seemed to be just left by the rep ,we got a taxi back but felt this was not good. The hotel is lovely but as with other reviews same thing just needs some tlc,the pool being the main area.
Food ,we enjoyed most of the food but did stop eating at the pool bar ,as birds kept landing on the food and there were lots of flies even under the covers .We did enjoy the Buddha restaurant went there a few times .They are plenty of different kinds of food for all tastes .
One thing that would be nice would be a kettle in the room ,I know there are qlenty of drinks but would be nice to be able to have one in the room ,as our room was away from the bar ...
I enjoyed our stay and loved walking along the beach ,if you want a holiday where the hardest decision is sit by the pool or go to the beach this is for you .....

The first great thing about the hotel is the fact that it is only a few minutes from the airport. Don't worry about aircraft noise as there are no flights at night and very few in the day and you can not really hear them anyway.
On arrival a fruit drink and efficient service with a porter taking your luggage to your room.
We sent an e-mail to the hotel requesting a high floor sea view and that is what we had (room no.2218).
The maid kept the room spotless and the air con was silent and worked well.
In the restaurants the food was very varied and of good quality. The waiters/waitresses were very attentive and will get you drinks if you need and will clear plates etc between courses.
The only thing missing for a 5 star hotel is a waiter service restaurant.
We spent a lot of time around the pool and the swim up bar and really enjoyed it, just one complaint was about some missing tiles. Be careful as I cut my toe on one.
Plenty of sunbeds and maintenance where coming around daily checking them. One word of warning do not put towels out before 9am as they will be removed if you leave them.
There are plenty of bars dotted around the hotel and the bar staff are excellent! They will keep you just as entertained as the animation team will.
Look up Elvis he wont let your glass stay empty and loves balancing things on his head while he dances and serves you! Sule again is great entertainment, ask him for one of his blue cocktails. Young Sidney makes a mean cocktail that we nicknamed Sidneys Kidney Killer!
Ronise will teach you a dance move or 2 while she serves you drinks and can often be seen in the club (pasha) getting everyone dancing. Other bar staff to check out are Varnia, Vladimir, Erick,Sabina. All the bar staff are very friendly and well trained thanks to Agostinho and Demis who also take time to chat to you.
Cleaning is done constantly all around the hotel.
The nightly entertainment was excellent. This was the first holiday that we watched every night.
As for tipping a couple of euros means a lot to them. Saying that, you dont have to tip and you will still get the same service.
The sun is very strong. We used factor 30 for the first couple of days and still went a bit red.
Generally its quite windy so you don't realize that you are burning so be warned.
Take toiletries, pain killers, suncream with you as its expensive to buy out there as everything is imported.
The aircraft we flew on was an old 757-200 and was looking its age but the crew were good with what they had to work with.
Not too impressed with one of the reps but they were there if you needed them.
Beware the quad biking as we saw lots of injuries and check your travel insurance as ours didn't cover us for it.
The beach has plenty of sunbeds with soft sand. The sea is often choppy though with a yellow flag more often than not.
We had a great time, expect 4 star and you wont be disappointed.
We would definitely go again!

Room Tip: ask for a high floor sea view.

We booked this hotel for an easy relaxing holiday for a week, the hotel is 2 mins from the airport, but you can't hear the planes. The hotel is huge, we were told 700 rooms, we stayed in a room on the second floor fronting the beach, the room was big, had a balcony, large bed, fridge for your drinks, tv had a couple of English channels, and was fine but not a 5* room. There were loads of swimming pools, towels are removed from unoccupied sun beds before 9am, we found if we went down before 9.30am we could get beds by the pool, any later than you are a tier back, ,but there's loads of beds. The pools were nice never seemed busy, and some of the mosaic pool tiles have come loose, but wasn't aware of any cut feet. The beach has loads of sun beds, and has white sand, but the sea is strong, most days it was red flagged, but people still went in including us to jump the waves. The pool bar was always busy, plenty of free alcoholic drinks, just a case of picking the ones you like. We got tired of the food, it was pretty much the same every day, even the al a carte's were poor. The entertainment staff are local and all friendly, and were good fun. There is not much near the hotel, you can walk to a beach bar at least an hour down the beach, but we were told not to go on the beach at night, the island is poor, and we did the rep's walk in to the town, where you understand most locals don't have running water, live in shanty towns and don't earn much, it's worth going into town in a group but we got tired of the pestering to go in shops, and to take taxis, but to be fair they only want to make some money and were polite. The hotel was fine for a week, decent weather, nice facilities but we just got bored being stuck in the hotel and the food became tiresome, I'd say its a European 3.5*, good hotel if you want an easy holiday.

Room Tip: Try and get an upper floor, take your mossy spray too

This is not a five star hotel, but please don't let that put you of going. Three girls, (say that lightly women) spent a week there end of September, had a brilliant time. What makes this place special is the people, the beautiful white sandy beaches, turquoise sea. A little rough at times so don't expect to go in the sea every day.
Around the pool it's fantastic beautifully laid out, plenty of sun beds and the pool is fantastic. Great pool bar doing fab cocktails, has an amazing swim up bar which we loved. The guys who work the bar are brilliant lots of fun.
Rooms are ok very clean nice comfy bed, what more do you need, well you need to take a nice large bath towel, a travel kettle tea coffee etc.
Food is ok not brilliant but plenty of choice, adequate.
The weather is amazing a lovely breeze which keeps the heat down, lovely for sunbathing, cooler on the beach. Take your sun bed to the edge of the ocean with a cocktail and watch the sun go now fab u lous.
Would I go again, absolutely.

The staff are outstanding at this hotel, helpful and friendly. This is a very large hotel which never felt crowded. I have stayed on Sal before and Boa Vista is much nicer island. The beach was beautiful and clean with lots of sunbeds and parasols, there isn't much to do on the Island but if that is the kind of holiday you want its good. We enjoyed the food but we don't believe the hotel should be graded as 5 star, probably 4.

Room Tip: Ask for sea views. You need to book the Asian Restaurant at least 5 days in advance as it is very p...

We had a great fun holiday here. We have stayed at a lot of 4 star places and expected something better here but we did not get it. The Riu Karamboa is of a 4 star standard in our opinion.

It is a lovely short trip from the airport of 3 minutes 20 seconds. Reception is nice with some comfortable armchairs and good views. Almost all the staff are wonderful and really make the place.

The pool restaurant is an absolute disgrace with disgusting food and flat drinks. The main restaurant is much better but it is so lacking in variety that by the end of the holiday we had lost the will to live as far as food is concerned.

When I read other reviews moaning about missing tiles on the pool I just thought "get a life" but there are thousands of tiles missing and it is quite dangerous on the feet. The pool is nice though and the beach is wonderful. The sea is a bit choppy but really fun.

The room is not 5 star. Sandpaper towels are not 5 star (the towels are also too small). A fridge stocked with absolutely nothing is not 5 star.

Cape Verde. offers very little to do which suits us just fine. One final tip, only ask for a sea view if you don't mind a long walk to your room and four flights of stairs to go up every time.

Room Tip: A sea view room is a long walk and up a lot of stairs.

Booked a 14 day holiday in May 2013, a very impressive hotel. Plenty of places to relax in the sun but disappointed with the very busy dining room which was very noisy. On the third evening of our holiday my husband complained of chest pains so a doctor was called. A young man from reception immediately came up to our hotel room and stayed with us until the doctor arrived. My husband was told that he had suffered a heart attack and needed urgent hospital attention. We were very surprised at this as we thought it might have been indigestion as he had been relaxing, had not had any alcohol, but had eaten a meat dish which was quite rich, although he had a very small portion. There is no hospital on the island, only a medical centre, but unfortunately this is very poorly equipped, not clean and patients are not provided with anything to eat or drink. (not even water). The manager of the hotel was wonderful and we were accompanied to the hospital by one of his staff and the hotel provided us with bottles of water, towels, blankets and toilet paper. When we arrived at the centre there were three Thomson reps waiting there for us. Our mobile phones (Tesco o2 network) would not work on the island and Michelle the rep went out and bought a temporary phone for us to use from the Medical centre to contact our family at home. After two nights at the Medical centre we were flown home by private jet accompanied by two doctors who remained with us until my husband was handed over to the UK hospital. This was all arranged by our insurance company (staysure) who were wonderful and liaised with us throughout the ordeal. Michelle the rep was wonderful during our stay at the Medical Centre and visited us a few times each day and even accompanied us to the aircraft. After a week in the UK hospital, my husband was sent home, and the consultant confirmed that he had not suffered a heart attack, and that it was probably indigestion. Our advice to anyone travelling to Cape Verde is to be aware of the very limited medical facilities on the island and take out good insurance. There are no words big enough to thank the staff at the Karamboa, Michelle the rep and the team at Staysure for their wonderful support. I think that this would have been the most wonderful holiday........
