Clubhotel Riu Karamboa

We stayed at the karamboa for our honeymoon and flew out early morning straight after our wedding. We were amazed to find the transfer is only 3 1/2 mins, in fact we were queued in the airport longer waiting to go thru customs. When we got to our hotel the luggage was brought to our room in a matter of mins and we found our room Had been upgraded due to us honeymooning. We both had burnt shoulders from waiting in the airport so be warned about this and try and take cream in your bag.
The weather over there is scorching and we'd left our factor 30 at home due to us both having decent tans already and had just took factor 15 and below. Big mistake we were both quite burnt after the first day. The wind makes it very deceiving on how hot it is.
The food is good, well cooked but after ten days can get a little samey were not fussy people at all. But I was struggling to look forward to meal times after a while because I knew it would be the same( some sort of fish, meat and veg and rice or chips)
The hotel rooms are lovely, nice and clean and plenty of room. We were in room 2029 which had a beautiful sea view. I'd say the only one thing letting them down is the lack of tea and coffee making facilities in them.
We did three trips with local company giggling geckos the full day 4x4 island tour, Saturday night fever and turtles tours. These were great and we had booked them online prior to going and then paid for them when we got there
All in all we had a fantastic time but wouldn't go back because after a while sunbathing all day does get a little boring and there's nothing else to do really. It's miles from anywhere and the wifi and shop in the hotel is extremely expensive. But at least we can say we've been to this beautiful island before it gets totally commercialised.

We spent a week at the Riu Karamboa as a couple on our honeymoon. I was a little apprehensive after reading some picky reviews from some guests but I am glad that what they said was not true. We had a fantastic time.

The flight leg room was more than adequate (much better than the Thomas Cook flight we went on last year to Tunisia). We sat towards the front and the leg room was excellent.

The transfer is very short, less than 5 minutes away and the check-in process at the hotel is very quick. The bags are brought to your room by the hotel staff and they are not pushy for tips like in other resorts. The room is spacious enough and decorated in an African style and all of the furnishings were nice. The room had 2 single beds pushed together and the airconditioning is temperature controlled so you don't have to have it as an ice box! The bathroom is open plan but there is a door on the toilet and a shower curtain for the shower. We were in room 1143 and we over looked the sea and were very close to the restaurant.

As we told them it was a our honeymoon we were provided with a bottle of sparkling wine on our second day.

The food was very nice, plenty of selection and we didn't have any tummy troubles at all. The hotel is kept spotlessly clean. The pool area is beginning to look tired and there are missing tiles in the pool which are a safety concern as numerous people cut their feet on the sharp edges.

The hotel operates a policy of not reserving sunbeds before 9 which is strictly followed by staff much to the dismay of some of the guests. However, it did mean that we were always able to get a decent spot. The beach looked nice but we are not really beach lovers so spent most of the time round the pool.

We went on one excursion, which was the 4 hour quad biking trip, this was fantastic and loads of fun. I would definitely recommend going on this one and it was well worth the money.

Overall, we had a fantastic trip, we probably won't return to the Karamboa as we like to try new hotels but we will definitely stay in a Riu again and would like to return to the Cape Verde, maybe to another Island.

We returned from your holiday on Monday and want to pass on how great it was... I became a little obsessed with checking the reviews before we left as our friends were coming along with us and I worried the resort might not be as good as we hoped... I shouldn't have worried.
The flight and booking in went smoothly, the hotel was beautiful (although not 5 star it was a good 4 star), the all inclusive was very good and staff were very considerate and attentive.
I would add though the swimming pool really needs to be repaired as there are a lot of small tiles missing which I cut my foot on and I did hear of others who did the same. The pools could be cleaner too but that is the only negative.
If you are going to go on any excurtions, us the guys on the beach for quad bikes and fab company "Giggling Gecko's" for all other tours with a personal touch. They have a website so you should check them out before you go.
The entertainment team are incredible, they work so hard throughout the day and into the night, the evening entertainment is pretty cheesy but so much effort is put into each show!
I hope this helps, don't listen to the negative reviews as some people just want to moan...
Have a fab holiday!

Choose Cape Verde as it hasn't been commercialised yet and still has the character of the locals. So if you want to just chill out with the option of activities this is the place to go. They upgraded our room due to it being our honeymoon with a nice bottle of champers of the second day. Weather in May is beautiful and the pool and beach were perfect to relax. Whale watching and quad bike was a bonus to the week. Hotel had no fault but the staff it was makes your stay even more perfect. Wish we could of stayed longer.

Despite an awful, cramped flight our two week stay in the Karamboa was brilliant. There's a wide choice of food and drink (even for vegetarians), the hotel and rooms and spotlessly clean and pool and beach are beautiful. Please do not be tempted to believe bad reviews of the hotel itself because they are simply not true. Do take lots of suncream because it really is hot, and do not expect to be able to buy a thing out there! The small shops in the hotel have suncream and bikinis and that sort of thing, but it is very expensive.

It was the perfect place to relax and do nothing. Thomson, however, was a different story. When THREE of our party's bags went missing somewhere between Gatwick and Boa Vista - the Thomson rep (Chris) and his manager (Michelle) couldn't have been less helpful or more rude. Once the lost property has been routed through and the rep returned with: a tablecloth, a snorkle, a straw hat and a German book called 'Incest' our sense of humour faltered and we asked for something to actually be done. After 4 days Chris informed us he hadn't actually called the helpline and/or tracked our final, missing bag. This continued until another flight (and bag) came in, and we were asked by Chris that, when filling in our Thomson questionnaires to remember that it wasn't the reps fault, and that a bad review could see them in Benidorm next year.

Despite this we still had a wonderful time and would absolutely consider returning (with a different tour operator).

Room Tip: I emailed the reception before we flew asking for a room close to the pool. Although Riu Diamond/Gol...

Stayed here for 2 weeks from the 15/07/13 to 29/07/2013

First and foremost this is not a BAD hotel at all,it is probably just a bit dated after 7 years of continuous use and The POOL AREA is due to be renovated in sept/oct 2013.

We had a great 2 weeks here and we will RETURN.
The 6 hour flight is a task in its self as you have to fly on a short haul plane Boing 737-200 on a long haul flight very cramped conditions,You are even given a complimentary meal to break the time up, At no time where we advised by thomsons of the small plane and I think you should be told this before booking!!!
The reason for the small plane is the runway on Boa vista,it is not long enough for a bigger plane.
Upon landing you will intrigued by the airport it is small and quaint and the majority of it has no roof.we where the only plane there and you disembark on to the runway and walk to the terminal.

Transfer is 10min topside and you can see the hotel from the airport,
The reps Wendy,Jenny and especsially Chris who is a double of Shaggy out of scobby doo(google before you go he is a ringer) joking apart he is a top guy and will help you and advise you any way he can,Don't lose him Thomson he his very good. Jenny and Wendy are good too but we had more to do with Chris,
Chris and Wendy do a FREE walk in to sal rai the capital on a Saturday or a Wednesday which is very good and takes about 60mins on the beech you stop at a couple of bars on the way then in to the capital,it is not like any other capital city you will have been to this is a very poor island .

Upon arrival at the hotel and after check in ,then going to find your room you feel the hotel is too big and the grounds are vast, our daughter was overcome by this BUT after 2 days of finding your feet and the shortcuts you are no more than 50mts from any of the facility's including the beech and the excellant waves just be carefull and take note of the flag system operated,

The room was of a good size and is open plan so bed and bathroom has no devider, there is a door on the toilet and the shower has a curtain on it and is a good size with plenty of hot water and pressure.

We took in 3 excursions the turtles, half day adults catermaran and 4x4 half day hotspots. All excellant the turtle one is at night and is very good but has a limited timescale for the laying of the eggs you even get to hold one of the eggs that has just been layed.
The catermaran was really good and enjoyable we had a great laugh with a very good crew.
The highlight of the 4x4hotspots is Santa Monica beech 18km of unspoilt bliss, but be carefull the waves are very strong and big with no lifeguards but a great time was had here.

The entertainment crew are very good and never stop from 10am till 11pm we didn't get involved with the activities during the day but watched the entertainment in the evening very acceptable, the hidden gem and maybe the 5th star in the rating are the bar staff especially Elizthbeth,,Amellda and Erik who when working at the top bar which looks on to the stage are an act in them selves they can shake a move and dance in rhythm and time with the guys on the stage,BRILLIANT

The restaurants where all good the food good and no tummy troubles, people say the buffet repeats it self every night with fish, beef ,pasta, salad galore, cheeses, local specials the list goes on and on!! It only REPEATS ITS SELF IF YOU HAVE THE SAME DISH EVERY NIGHT,They serve enough main courses every night to have some thing different every night for 7 days!!

The grounds are very well kept all day every day the ground staff are working non stop and do a brilliant job,
The reception staff are also excellant and were more than happy to help with any matter ,

We where on the 1st floor and I only saw 2 cockroache and 1 of them was in the reception toilets.

All in all a very good family holiday meeting some great locals and also some nice people on holiday?

We will return.

A fantastic hotel which is like a palace. The staff are plentiful and customer service great. The rooms were spacious and very clean. You want for nothing, food is fab and always available as are drinks. Would definitely recommend this hotel - it is literally on the beach with sun beds a plenty.
