faultless hotel. catering, cleaning, staff, absolutely perfect. Although it is always breezy, it would not be bearable without it. beach is fantastic, although they are strict if the sea is choppy, definatley not allowed in . flights are alway early

Room Tip: A room with a veiw of the sunset would be special, but in general any room

Spent a week at the Riu Karamboa 29/10-05/11/12. The hotel is excellent and all the staff are very friendly. The weather was very hot and no rain at all which was great. We went as a family, myself, partner and daughter 8. Although the rooms as not very spacious they were very clean. The hotel restaurants were always well varied and there was never a shortage. We went on the 4x4 jeep trip which was brilliant as you got to see the best bits of the island. The electricity only went off once during the whole holiday but this was not too much of a problem. There is nothing really to do or spend your money on, on this holiday it is a holiday for lazing around and totally unwinding. Would like to mention that the Thomson Reps especially Natalie were brilliant, and that my daughter has now got a best friend for life. the location of the hotel is only 5 minutes from the airport, which was great after the flight. There is no kids club for the british kids for if you are going take plenty to keep them busy.

An amazing hotel. Made even better by staff that are very friendly - helpful - polite and they work incredibly hard. The entertainment team were also superb, the aqua gym excellent and also made very funny by the instructors who seem to really love their work.
The food was amazing - especially considering the huge numbers of guests they are catering for.

Returned home early hours after 2 weeks at Karamboa. Read some horrifying reviews on this site before leaving and was slightly worried. Absolutely no need at all. Yes the six hour flight is not a pleasant experience but one which dwindles from the memory after a couple of hours at the pool / beach and the odd cocktail. Yes the hotel isn't five star despite being billed as such, but its spotlessly clean and well-kept. For a pointer it's probably not quite on a par with say a Marriott or a decent Best Western in the USA but not that far away. We had a family room - bedroom for us, living room with sofa bed for the kids and separate bathroom with two wash bowls, shower (with curtain!) and wc. All air con, fridge and telly. But let's face it, with all day sunshine, temp up in the 30 degrees, 5 pools, private beach we did not spend much waking time there. Food is fine, it is a little repetitive in the main restaurant after 12 days or so but hey, I wasn't cooking it so I ain't complaining. Lots of lovely salad, fish and steak. The Cape Verdian was our favourite, boiled and fried plantain (banana to you and me) tunafish soup (sounds a little suspect - tastes divine) and we went 4 times. Asian restaurant wasn't up to much but we don't like Chinese food any way. Being an unashamed carnivore and butchers son I thought the African restaurant was really good too - vegetarian wife and slightly less protein-obsessed kids weren't too sure... Make sure you get involved with the activities - means you are hungry for the next meal! - i used the gym several times early morning, then did a gentler gym on beach mid morning, water polo just before lunch, mrs did step aerobics mid afternoon and in between we did cocktails, played in the pool, swam, bodyboarding (free with all inclusive) in the sea, watched turtles, went for a walk... The animation team work their socks off - big applause to ajhiri, K2 and the rest.

Look, you will have a really good time!

But please remember how little these people are paid - 250euros a month is the top wage and a bed - thats a BED not a room - in the cheapest (slum is the correct description in town) area of Sal Rei is 60 euros a month - do the math people. There's a project in the capital Sal Rei run by an Italian woman called Sonia which looks after the kids who live in the slums allowing their parents to put in the 12 hour minimum shifts - it washes the kids, clothes and feeds them but most importantly gives them an education and teaches them the importance of hygiene and nutrition and health. If the project was mor there these kids would just be on the street. Please look out for the Giggling Gecko tours run by Scots couple Richard and Jenny. They do - among other tours - a half day charity tour of Boa Vista which takes in the project. If you are so minded they will also let you know beforehand what items the charity project needs and if you contact Thompsons and tell them you're taking items for charity they will increase your baggage allowance FOR FREE!! (Well done Thompsons!!!)
All I can say is we had a great time at the Karamboa and hopefully made a little bit of difference to some kids' lives. I reckon the world would be a better place if we could all come back from holiday and be able to say that.

We stayed at the RIU Karamboa at the beginning of November & loved every minute of our stay!
Outbound flight was comfortable & went quite quickly. It took us 6 hours going and 5 hours 10 minutes on the return and I couldn't fault the flight (we had the emergency exit seats both ways, so we had plenty of room). Ensure that you take I-pads, flims etc to keep you occupied during the flight.

On arrival in Cape Verde, we asked the rep how much a taxi would be to our hotel & she said 10 euros (although someone we spoke to at the hotel only paid 5 euros). So rather than wait around for the coach, we hoped in a taxi and I must say me & my family felt very comfortable and safe (we had heard before we went to Cape Verde that it isn't safe, but we found it perfectly fine).

The hotel is beautiful and all areas were clean. The staff provided us with a warm welcome and an efficient check-in. We did get lost when looking for our room, but we eventually found it and the bell boy brought our suitcases to our room very quickly. The room did have an African feel to it, but i think this makes the room unique to Cape Verde.

I must say during our stay that we had sunshine and very hot weather for the 8nts that we spent at this hotel, so we were very lucky. All of the staff at this hotel are so friendly and always said 'Hola' to us. The food was enjoyable & it is what you get at most RIU hotels (this isn't the first one we've stayed in). In the restaurant both Vanessa and Monica made us feel very welcome.
We ate in all 3 specialty restaurants; African, Cape Verdian & Asian. Our favourite was the Asian, but all 3 were good. Although you do have to book 3 days ahead.

Given the mixed reviews I was a little apprehensive & did think what have I let myself in for. But actually people do moan about silly things in their reviews, so there is no need to worry. This hotel is perfect for a winter break in the sunshine. Thankyou to all the staff who gave us a warm welcome at this hotel and we cant wait to come back!!

Won't bother reviewing hotel as plenty of such reviews on here -suffice to say we had a good week ( just returned) and was just as we expected having been to other Riu's. Posting really to say we never saw a single mozzie all week and saw no evidence of other folk suffering bites - and you see plenty of exposed flesh during the week ! We didn't bother with deet or plug-in after the first 2 days because there wasn't any need. Hope this helps -take the stuff to be safe but don't think the place is mozzie-ridden .

Stayed at riu karamboa 24th sept - 4th oct 2012 with my new husband and 2 friends. What can I say apart from wow! Outbound flight was smooth, quicker than expected and quite comfortable for a Thomson flight.Had to queue a while to get through security when we landed at boa vista which was abit uncomfortable as it was very hot but we got through it.You can see hotel when your coming into land and it looks very impressive.Transfer time was literally 5 mins if that.Hotel staff very friendly when we arrived and continued to be like that throughout our whole stay. They always had smiles on their faces and couldn't do enough for you.Our room was spacious and kept very clean.Pool was excellent, plenty of beds for everyone and staff were forever cleaning.Food was nice, all the usual stuff but certainly edible and not 1 upset tummy or mad loo dash between the 4
of us.Night time entertainment was brilliant.Entertainment team do a fantastic job from organising daytime activities, darts, boules e.t.c to the evening shows.Their dancing is out of this world and just to see whiskey's torso is enough in itself.Weather was very hot.Had 3 days of bad storms,it caused chaos throughout the hotel but the staff coped so well and it made our holiday experience even better..Nice quick transfer back to airport but things do run very slowly and with the heat it can be quite unpleasant.Just do what we done,go and sit in shade and wait for queue to go down. The plane isn't going to go without you.We per booked our seats when booking holiday so there is no
rush.smooth and quick flight back yet again.Mosquitoes are a pain but come on people, your in a hot country what do you expect,it's not the hotels fault.Just go prepared.Overall fantastic holiday.usually go away for 10 nights as find 2 wks too long and even then still look forward to coming but at the end of this holiday we really didn't want to come home.Booking up for 2 wks next year.
