I'll preface this: We must have gone on one of the busiest nights of the year, the night before Easter.

However: They had my reservation wrong (I'd asked for a regular bungalow, they had me down for a twice-as-expensive "luxury" bungalow). They lost our friend's reservation. When I asked if they could put an extra bed or mattress in our room (and we'd all share), they said "sure"...and then were shocked when I actually said I wanted them to do that. Turns out there is no way they could, because the doors are so small. (We couldn't get another room, as they were all sold out.)

Our friend said, fine, she'd deal with it. That probably wouldn't have been a problem, if the A/C in our bungalow had worked. Instead, it was about 90 degrees (Fahrenheit, so, 30+ C) in the room. No one slept.

If everything else had been great, maybe it would have been ok, but the "special dinner" was pretty gross, and the special drinks were as well. All in all, a piss poor end to what had been a draining (though good) day.

(One big bright spot: The staff. I've not seen staff that attentive or accommodating anywhere else in the region. Due to the problems with the A/C and everything else, our room was only half-price, back down to what we would have paid for the room we'd actually booked.)

We spent four nights in the Awale Plage and had a really relaxing time. We stayed in a standard bungalow, which was big enough for us. The rooms were clean, although we weren’t able to recognize that somebody clean our rooms during our stay. We could recognize that the owner take care of the hotel area because the staff clean the garden at many times and we saw them redecorate some rooms. Our room was not redecorated, but anyway it was good. Only our bathroom was not nice. They really should change the wooden bathroom-door, because it was musty.
We liked the hotel area very much, because the owner create a lovely place with a lot of nice corners you can relax – the swimming pool, the beach bar, the beautiful restaurant, the chess place and so on. So the hotel is a perfect place to relax, because Grand Popo and the Hotel would be never overcrowded, maybe. The beach area is also very nice and it’s fun to watch the fishermen. During the four days we stayed there, we were the only guests, who relax at the beach.
In the surrounding area at the hotel there is not much you can do. You can make some daytrips (e.g. Ouidah). The Hotel can help you to organize a driver.
The restaurant is good and in a beautiful location. Most of the service staff only spoke French, but they were very friendly and tried to understand our bad French.

All in all, you shouldn’t expect luxury, but the price performance ratio is very good. Most is well-kept and if you have one of the redecorated rooms, it’s a perfect relaxing place with a beautiful beach for your one. So we would stay here again and recommend the Awale Plage.

Came here for a couple of days of recreation from a Niger job. It's a small beach resort that also organises meetings and conferences. Other than that, there is really nothing much to do: there is no real town or village, no markets, no watersports, no events, no things to see - just you and your family and friends/colleagues and the bungalow (and a pool for the kids). Everybody is in bed by nine. But accommodation is comfortable, and the food is quite nice. Customers are mostly expat families from Cotonou (plus the conferences). There’s another similar resort down the road (Auberge). The nearest shop (mosquito spray, drinks, pharmacy) is about 40 mins walking distance east along the main Lomé - Cotonou road (I walked, but normally people have their own transport). That’s about it for Grand Popo.

There’s a wide sandy beach where you will not go very often (it’s just too hot), and a dangerous looking ocean with heavy swell (no swimming). Further down the beach there is a small fishing village. The resort area (bungalows, bar, restaurant, pool) is pleasant and well kept. The rooms are simple but functional and clean, and they use locally made hardwood furniture throughout. Water and electricity worked fine most of the time, also a/c. There’s free wifi internet which covers most of the resort. It should be on every day from 12 to 8pm but it’s not very reliable, and slow.

The price is reasonable at 25000 CFA (40 euro) per bungalow for 2 per night, half of what you would pay, say, for the Cotonou Ibis. Restaurant prices are about the same as in Cotonou (5000 CFA per main dish). All in all: good value and a nice experience.

Entering the garden of this hotel immediately makes you feel good. The personnel you meet also makes you feel welcome. The rooms are ok as long as you don't sleep in them with four persons, because the lofts are to hot since the airconditioning doesn't reach that part of the room. There is really good food and the pool is nice. We will certainly be back here.

This is a typical beach resort hotel with semi-detached bungalows in quite a nice setting with trees..The room design is very bad if you are sharing, because it is two storey and the air conditioning is freezing downstairs while the heat remains stifling upstairs. The beach looks attractive, but it is dangerous to swim. Service was very slow and not friendly. We went a few miles along the beach to "L'Auberge" for lunch, where the food and service were better, and I think that would be a better place to stay.

Really great place to stay, if we had more time we may have better appreciated the beach location. But coming from No. Benin it was just nice. The food, bar and reception was great. Really a great place to stay. We had a family suite, with loft, it was comfortable.
