A great walk and if you have someone who knows the history, even better! The whirlpools are huge and easily seen even from high up!

I often walk this park for stress relief, as it is one of the quieter parks. Amazing views of the whirlpool, gorge, across to Canada, the Spanish Aerocar. Spectacular anytime of year. The trails are rustic, but no climbing--just stay behind the railing--and keep kids back too. The park itself is more expansive than it looks, small playground, bathroom area and some information about the history, but not a monitored park. Free parking. Picnic areas. Great for wedding photos, too.

We stopped here twice...once for a packed picnic lunch which was so delightful. It was shady and the breeze from the gorge was wonderful on a hot summer day. Plus, free parking. New bathroom and small orientation area. Always felt safe and a friendly park ranger was making rounds.

After doing some other touring we came back to actually view the Whirlpool. It's not a swirling vortex like in the movies so it was hard to "show" it to my 8 year old but he was still impressed to see the right hand turn in the river with the reverse flow. The views of the standing waves were impressive to say the least. We then found a shady spot in the breeze to play catch which made my son happy. It was nice to take a break from the "sightseeing" itinerary.

I am def. glad that we stopped here and had a beautiful view for free. I had contemplated the Aero cars on the CAN side and after seeing the car and whirlpool I knew it wasn't worth the money.

Tip: upon entering the welcome center take the path on your LEFT to go DOWN, walk along for the views and then come back the opposite path (RIGHT) which is less steep. We learned this buy following a small tour group!

We enjoyed the whirlpool overlook and hiked the Devils Hole portion of the trail. Lots and lots of stairs though so don't try the trails if you're not in good shape. Our four year old did it so its not impossible, but it took a lot of engine that could encouragement to get her up the last few sets of steps. Nice views though. There were bathrooms at both trailheads. The Devil's Hole ones were picturesque in an old building covered in ivy, but on the inside looked almost abandoned and pretty sketch. The whirlpool ones were much nicer and we actually made use of them for an emergency stop later.

The overlook down into the whirlpool turnaround was quite beautiful, and had throngs of hawks floating on the uplifts above the treelines. The whirlpool and how it gets created by the water movement interacting with the terrain is quite fascinating.
