This half hour trip was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. One is brought face to face with a cliff of water that is unlike anything else I have ever seen. Next time I will bring a clear cover for my camera because the spray will go right into the lens. Even with all this excitement I never felt in danger.

We enjoyed the Maid of the Mist boat ride on the lower Niagara River. Very smooth ride in very choppy waters near the Horseshoe Falls. A little disgusting to read that Hornblower (a U.S. company) is trying to run Maid of the Mist out of business by saying they should have bid on all operations for the river. Hornblower will be taking over the Canadian side boat runs starting in 2014 with ideas of having illumination cruises and sunset cruises. A local in NY told us that he wasn't sure authorities would go for that because they try to avoid any activities that could potentially cause the need for a night rescue on the river. Maid of the Mist has been in business since 1846 and will continue to do boat tours on the New York side of the border in 2014. For 2013, Maid of the Mist runs both sides of the river. Currently Hornblower is accepting job applications on their website for boat captains. We'll have to wait and see how that works out for them.

I saw the falls many times as a kid - even "turned off" one year in the 60's - and was never all that impressed. Now, 50 years later, I finally went on the boat - and it's a whole 'nother world down there. There;s no reason to see the falls and not take the boat. It's not exhorbitant ($15.50 adult) and that of course includes the fashionably (:)) blue pullover poncho. You will get more than a little damp regardless. It's worth it.

What an awesome experience! It was a really hot day and getting up close to the falls definitely helped cool off!!! We were right on the bow and the kids were simply awed by the majesty of the falls and the beauty of mother nature as we entered the plunge pool. Expect to get soaked but it will be the best soaking of your life other than the one you'll get when you visit Cave of the Winds and get on the Hurricane Deck!!

We took our 2 year old son on the Maid of the Mist and it was so much fun! He loved the boat ride and getting up close to the falls and when the mist came he squealed and absolutely loved it. Beautiful scenery and fun!! How can you go wrong :) He loved his little rain poncho they provide to you as part of the cost.
