“Gorgeous art deco hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2013

We stayed at the Giacomo with family (3 grandkids and their parents) this month. Upon entering the building, our 8 year old was just awed! "I love this place, it's so beautiful". Not many kids even notice a hotel building. The rooms didn't disappoint either. Wonderfully plush, comfy linens and mattress. The shower was great, all the amenities in the bath. Chocolates at bedside were a bit hit. The view from the 19th floor is awesome. Everything is beautiful, no expense was spared in decorating this hotel and we'd stay there again of course.
Check out the bathrobes ... oh my felt like silk on the outside, soft absorbent cotton inside, we totally wanted to buy them.

The staff was great with instructions on how to get to the falls, just a few minutes away but construction changed our route. Very centrally located, lots to do right around the hotel when we weren't oohing and aahing at the falls.
Breakfast was included but sadly didn't measure up to most breakfasts we've had at Holiday Inns or Best Westerns. Otherwise, what a great find.

Room Tip: Get to the highest floor possible for better views. The top floors are apartments.

Decided to stay on the American side for a change. After reading Trip Advisor reviews of The Giacomo, we decided to try it. Very happy that we did. The outside of the building is a very plain looking brown brick, which is deceiving, as we found the inside to be very, very nice Check-in staff was efficient and friendly. Room was nicely furnished and the king bed was super comfortable. The top floor observation lounge offered a great view of the river flowing into the falls and of the city. Very nice at night. Breakfast was excellent!!

I really loved everything about this hotel - location, staff, rooms. It's a 10-15 mins walk to the Niagara Falls and the hotel itself is beautifully designed. The staff was super friendly and helpful, always ready to assist. Our room was clean and the bed was very comfy! There were bathrobes which I liked very much, and there's an option to buy one for 70 bucks for those who can't part with it))) During the breakfast we were offered a large variety of food, one of the best breakfasts we had during our cross-country trip. There's also free wifi and a lounge area on the top floor with lovely views.

Comfortable and close to everything. Clean and well kept property. Our room did not face the falls which was fine. You could go to the top floor observation lounge which provided a breath taking view. This is something to keep in mind based on your preference. The staff were friendly and courteous. The feel was like you were in your own apartment.
With regard to the breakfast, they had one person running the entire dinning room. They were terribly under stocked and ran out of everything. This was a bit disappointing. As the breakfast was just an aside, this certainly was not a deal breaker. I would stay at this property again if in the area. I love the furnishings, etc. Cool place. . .kinda French art deco.

Room Tip: We had a view of the casino hotel. If view is important to you. . .make sure that you get a falls v...

We had a late checkin and the front desk took care of our car, gave us directions to the Falls and told us about breakfast times. The breakfast was very filling, having made to order eggs and waffles, lunch meats, sausage, fruit and bagels. There was also three kinds of juices and fresh coffee.
The rooms were spacious but no views for us. The bathroom was huge with a 2-person walkin shower. But you can go up to the 19th floor for a 360degree view of the city and Canada. We only had to walk about 5 minutes to the NY park with a great view of the American falls. There were ticket booths for both Cave of the Winds and Maid of the Mist there too.
Overall, a very nice boutique hotel with a perfect convenient location. Prices were comparable to the chain places but much better ambiance.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the falls if possible and higher floor (5-6).

We took the advice of the TripAdvisor reviews for this hotel for a one-night stay in Niagara Falls, NY before we headed east for the remainder of our vacation in the Finger Lakes region.
The hotel itself is nice. The décor is very eclectic and has a Parisian/Italian/Victorian mish-mash theme going for it. I liked the darker, rich color schemes with the heavy upholstery, dark stained woodwork and deep toned paint colors.
The room was average sized for a King room with a good sized TV, desk, armchair, ottoman, closet, Keurig coffee maker, an amazingly comfortable king bed with excellent pillows, and a full bath with a stand-up shower (no tub). The room had some minor flaws, including: a birds nest of wires under the desk - including the unplugged, tangled cord to the coffee maker, lipstick on one of the two coffee cups (gross!), and a solid, wood pedestal for the king bed that is approximately 3" - 4" larger than the mattress - meaning it was only a matter of time before I cracked a toe against it in walking across the room (ended up breaking the 4th toe of my right foot...ouch!). The ice machine, BTW is clear down on the first floor through a weird maze of "exit" doors.
The hotel staff were pleasant enough, but seemed a bit under-trained regarding hotel services, local attractions and perhaps challenged if given an atypical customer request.
For the $188 paid for the one night, this was not a bargain, but neither was it worth the higher price tag - regardless of the "summer season". One redeeming quality was the better-than-average hot buffet breakfast included in the stay. Overall, the stay was OK, but not as good as I was hoping for.
Now for the bad news....While the hotel is located in the historic United Office Building from the mid 1920's, the walk into or out of the front door and clients are greeted with an unbearable stench of raw sewage emanating from nearby sewer manholes. It is really bad...and there is little to do to escape it - except to hold your breath as you enter/leave for at least 1/2 block!
Further, Niagara Falls has become the worst parts of Las Vegas or Atlantic City in that this majestic building is surrounded by casinos, cheesy souvenir shops, empty buildings, and a 1/2 dozen Indian restaurants/food carts all vying for your attention and your money. Now, for the record, I l-o-v-e Indian food. But, how about a cheese steak cart? Or, a yakisoba/teriyaki chicken truck? Or, a good old burger & fries wagon? A little variety would be nice. I am convinced...no waterfalls, no Niagara Falls.
Ultimately, in our 28-hour stay, we'd seen plenty. Maybe next time, we'll stay across the border.

Room Tip: Ask for room on 6th floor for a decent view and as high as you can go in the hotel portion of this 1...

Very nice hotel. Staff was always great, everyone treated us nice. Room was great! Only con was my husband knicked his leg on edge of platform bed. Breakfast was good and the cook was very
nice. I thought the location was perfect for us .. Near enough to the sites and away from the crowds. I will recommend this hotel.
