We love the waterfalls but hate all the comercialization of the area so we personally like the NY side the best but still took the kids to see both. We camped at Four Mile Creek State Park and so had a state park pass. This allowed us to park in the State Park parking lot for free. We visited the NY side in the evening. I want to say is was close to 7:00, we walked the grounds. Than we went to the Maid of the Mist entrance. We happened to be there just before they closed and so they allowed people to go onto the observation deck and down to the walkway for free the last 15 minutes. We were just going to pay the $1 fee/person to go do this but the admissions clerk informed us we could wait about 10 minutes and get in for free! Being that is was the summer we still had plenty of daylight and the crowds were not terrible. It was also a bit cooler than it had been earlier in the day.
