When our appetizer came, about 30 minutes after an acceptable time, we noticed that our clams were tasteless. We thought that it would be good to at least try to mop up some flavor with bread, but there were no waiters waiting to serve anymore bread. The entrees of gnocci and chicken parmigiana were both tasteless and greasy. Not to mention the waitress not only didn't know the menu, but didn't know that I said gnocci unless it was pronounced with a hard "g." They continued to fail at the basics when we asked for oil for the bread (once it finally came) and cheese. Instead of giving us a bottle of oil and grating cheese onto the meal, the servers at Modern gave us two tiny serving bowls meant for 3, maybe 4, olives. I would love to tell you about desert, but we arrived for a light lunch and left with the equally disappointed dinner crowd. Overpriced, terrible service for tasteless food.

My family of 4 which includes 2 kids 5 and 7, went to Modern Pizza for dinner tonight. We had a 30 minute wait which almost made us leave, but, the manager offered us a comfy seating area for us to wait, brought us apps for us to eat while we waited, we had a drink and before we knew it our table was ready. The space is beautiful, our waiter was great, the food was great, the owner Anthony came to say hello and make sure we were happy (we were!)...it was a fun night out with the kids, we will def go back (maybe without them next time).

This is the new Modern Pizza, but a word about the old one is in order. At the old Modern Pizza, the parking was terrible, the decor was a few decades behind the times, but the food was fresh, tasty, and abundant (maybe too abundant), and the service, by a tight-knit staff that could have been related to the owners, with a wonderful camaraderie and just the right amount of attitude, was just as good.

At the new one, the parking is better.

Otherwise, it's just another bar and restaurant in a handsomely and expensively renovated old space. We went on a Monday night, and perhaps it was because it was Monday or because they had only been open for two months or so, but it was awful.

The salad for two, which I remember from the old place as huge, with large. crisp pieces of fresh ingredients, was OK, but almost soggy (and there was no choice of dressing - I'm in the minority and don't prefere balsamic vinegar and would have liked the choice of wine vinegar)and not particulally large. It didn't have the snap that the old place's salad had.

The garlic bread seemed like it was made with some sort of brown concoction that was slathered on the bread, since it was (like the salad) soggy and seemed machine-made, with almost no hint or physical evidence of garlic or the feel of toasted bread. It also took about 20 minutes to get to us. Unfortunately, our entrees took even longer - over a half hour after a number of requests -- when we could get the server's attention, which wasn't easy. Plus, the linguine with clam sauce was bland and came garnished with a single clam on the half shell, sort of like a label, instead of the half-dozen or more clams the former restaurant's dish used to sport. None of the dishes gave you that sense of generous abundance and freshness the old place had. Chicken parmesan was OK, but no better than what you get in most pizza places.

No one filled our water glasses or asked us if we wanted something more to drink, or, frankly, paid us much attention. At the end of the meal the server apologized and comped our drinks.

We won't be back.

Modern Pizza at their former location had been our family "go to" place for a quick, wonderful meal in a cozy homey place close to home. Last night we decided to try the new location. Though I appreciated the public parking lot across the street (even though you still have to feed the meters at 6:00 pm) the rest of the evening went downhill from there. Our party of 4 arrived at 6:15 only to find out that you now need reservations. The 3 young ladies behind the hostess desk acted as if this was their first day on the job. One told us it would be 20 minutes, one said 30 minutes and the last said 40 minutes. After waiting 20 minutes, and seeing at least 5 empty tables that could accomodate 4 people, we asked the manager what the delay was. He said he would find out. He never came back!! The front seating area of the restuarant is beautiful, the back seating area is under utilized and NOISY! We were seated in the back after waiting 50 minutes. The service is slow and the staff has no idea what "customer service" is, it seems every question we asked was referred to someone else. The food portions were smaller, the bread lukewarm at best and the salad was swimming in dressing. We were very disappointed. I hope this is just growing pains. We will give it one more try, if only to use up our gift certificate. This time we will make reservations and expect to wait at least 10 minutes, as the party of 4 did that arrived for their 7pm reservation. I lauged to myself when they were told the staff needed to get their table ready (remember those 5 empty tables from before....they were still empty).

We've been regular patrons of this restaurant for twenty years. The new location at Huguenot Avenue between Division Street and Center Avenue is much larger and has a much nicer ambience. After some teething pains, the enlarged staff has settled in and service has returned to its former excellence. The menu has been enlarged, with several dishes that had formerly been specials earning a place on the regular menu. I had been concerned about the pizza given that the old location had a massive brick oven, but the pizzas and the bread, which is baked in house, are as good as they ever were. There is far more parking available at the new address; there's a City lot across the street and additional parking after 6 PM at the hardware store next door. There's a separate door for takeout orders behind the restaurant on Westchester Place. There's also a separate party room that looks to be able to hold at least 60 people in comfort. The large, attractive bar is constantly busy. Reservations are advisable on Friday and Saturday nights.
