“Still very good, BUT........”
Reviewed April 12, 2014

they no longer have the dollar an oyster and dollar a shrimp deal on Friday (too many takers?), they've moved it to Wednesday, where they've done away with the sliders deal.

So we had two shrimp cocktails, and two glasses of wine. The bill? A WHOPPING $50.

AND, guess how many shrimp (good shrimp, I have to admit) were in the shrimpy shrimp cocktail? If you guessed six, you'd be wrong. There were FOUR. Now that's shrimpy.

So, we won't be back when there isn't the oyster and shrimp deal on, and we have to remember that it's on a Wednesday, which isn't convenient, and which is probably why they moved it from Friday.

Not nice.

Still lots of walk in traffic from the commuter residents who occupy the Trump and Avalon towers, and don't shop in New Rochelle, since sadly it is still a ghost town in terms of stores. Can you believe there's a head shop around the corner from Gnarly Vine. I kid you not.

Oh well.

“Good find tucked away”
Reviewed March 4, 2014

Stopped into the Gnarly Vine in January prior to going to dinner for a friends birthday. We were a group of 5 and we had wine and a cheese & meat sampler platter. Staff was friendly & held a table for us before all of our party arrived. Service was good, and wine & food were enjoyable as well. The bartender informed us they had been there for a few years but it was a first visit for all of us. Our visit was short but would definitely make a return visit.

“VERY nice find...”
Reviewed February 23, 2014

and in the wasteland that is New Rochelle, that ain't easy. Yes, there are some excellent restaurants there, but the main street is still a ghost town. Given that, your view with a seat facing the window gives you nothing, and I do mean nothing, of interest to watch, but the food and drink here make up for it.

We had passed this place many times, but since it opens at 5:00pm, we were always too early. This time we were lucky. Nothing like its dubious exterior, it is smart, modern, albeit small. I wonder what poor long gone store or restaurant inhabited this place? As noted, we chose a table by the window, and the waitress was quick and efficient and very pleasant.

I wasn't aware that they don't have liquor, but the Viognier was excellent. Happily, we were there on a Friday, when they have an 'oyster/shrimp for a dollar each' special, and special it was. The oysters were fresh and delicious, but the shrimp surprised us both. They were very fresh, large, and perfectly cooked. Shrimp are a dicey product to buy or eat out - at times small or badly cooked or squishy because they were frozen. These were perfect, and we had a second helping!

Nice place to stop in for a wine on the way home (if you are walking from the train) to the towers in New Rochelle, or for a snack or a light meal. They don't have a full menu and are very New York-ish for the ghost town, but I'm glad they are there. We will go back.

Be sure to get there after 6:00pm, otherwise you'll be paying to park to eat, and I don't do that. So, find Gnarly Vine and give them a try, you won't be sorry.

Trust me.

“Unique experience here in Westchester”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

This is a different food and wine experience than any other place here in Westchester. Definitely worth a night out. We went out looking for a place to have drinks and stumbled on the place. 3 of the 4 are wine drinkers and loved some if the wine they offered that night. I am the non wine drinker, had a good selction of craft beer i enjoyed. We are told the wines do change often and are seasonal along with the food offering. We had the meat and cheese board that had very nice portions if cheese and meat. It was more than enough for the four of us to enjoy.
Only complaint is the food service is slow, a factor of the tiny open kitchen they work from. Just gave us a chance to enjoy more wine and good company.
We look forward to going back soon.
