The Mohonk Mountain House is truly a beautiful building and surrounding grounds. We came here for a long weekend stay after hearing about the property for many years. The nightly rate is pricey but acceptable considering the amenities it covers: all meals, entertainment & recreation activities.
The rooms are comfortable but not necessarily "luxurious". I was impressed with the cleanliness of the room and the entire property. I saw employees cleaning banisters and surfaces around the clock. It is clear that Mohonk takes a lot of pride in their building and appearance and has not allowed anything to appear run-down as often happens with historic resorts.
We ate mostly at the Main Dining Room. Though the options were a bit limiting (understandable considering the volume of guests being served), I enjoyed each and every one of my dishes. My wife on the other hand found her choices to be subpar. Not until the last night did we eat at Founder's, another dining location, and wished we had been dining there the entire stay. The menu had more worldly inspired options and the food was outstanding and slightly more elevated. I would highly recommend eating dinner at Founder's over the Main Dining Room when possible. It is also a much smaller dining room so the background noise was very low.
We enjoyed a number of the recreation activities, canoeing, hiking, swimming. We attempted to rent E-bikes (which cost $75 each) but as we were trying out the bikes, I fell off and rolled down a small muddy hill. The smallest bike was still too tall for me (I am 5') so we were not able to ride. The young employee working at the stand was not overly helpful nor concerned about my fall. I also thought the $75 charge was a bit ridiculous considering the amount of bikes available.
We also visited the spa for massages. The spa building is gorgeous and very relaxing. We enjoyed but were not overly impressed with our massages that seemed very low pressure, perhaps we just chose the wrong ones.
The only other critique I have is regarding the service of alcoholic beverages. There was really only one indoor bar and the drink prices were some of the highest we've ever seen - $23 for any cocktail. We live near Boston and frequent NYC and have never seen prices of this kind for your average mixed drink. It left a bad taste in my mouth. I mentioned this to other guests and they all said they bring their own alcohol for that reason.
All in all we enjoyed a relaxing trip to this beautiful property. I don't think we will make a return trip but I can see why others do.
