“Wonderful Holiday”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

Our yearly trips to Mohonk are my most anticipated holidays of the year. We live in Europe and come to America to meet up with family and friends at Mohonk and Mohonk provides the BEST atmosphere to relax, play, and rejuvenate. Tennis is terrific here. Hiking is superb. The food is plentiful and delicious with many options for dining from the marvelous Granary Cook out above the lake to formal dining in the evening preceded by a wonderful adult beverage in the Carriage Lounge. Our children, grandchildren, and friends always look forward to our times together at Mohonk. The staff is superb and the rooms cozy and restful. The Spa is certainly equal to its current Conde Naste award and the Spa staff is first class.

The very first step I went in was already a disaster! Carpet needs to be replaced, the whole place needs a renovation, it's depressing. The food is mediocare at best, makes you wish it wasn't all inclusive so we could justify eating somewhere else. Primarily for old people, and families with young children, but not a good place for couples.

The Hotel is  relying way too much on beautiful grounds and location. The actual hotel feels like it's a 100 years out of date

Visit at your own risk and peril!

If you are looking for the simple pleasures of yesteryear then you will be happy here. The grounds are beautiful but the rooms and decor are dated. The food was fine and the staff attentive but it is overpriced given that it is not a luxurious experience. We did enjoy the beautiful gardens, first class views from the old fashioned porches and indoor heated pool.

When my partner and I arrived at Mohonk, we were worried. The place had the feel of a nursing home, and I thought I could even detect a faint smell of urine in the lobby. After a very friendly check-in, we entered our room (lakeside, 6th floor) and our first thoughts were "Great view!, but what a small room!".
We unpacked and went immediately to the lounge for a sandwich and drink. The service there was friendly but slow. Overall, I thought we made a mistake and was already hoping the upcoming three night stay would go quickly.
However, over the next two days, we found ourselves getting into the Mohonk groove. We sat and rocked on our balcony while watching the day and night evolve on the lake. We went canoeing. We went peddle boating. We hiked to the top of the monument one day and along the other side of the lake the next day (be sure to go as far as Artist's Rock on the side of the lake opposite the monument - the view is astounding from there). We watched sunsets from the restaurant and the porch.
By the time we had to leave, we were sold. The setting is truly gorgeous and the pace is relaxing.

It's not perfect. While breakfasts and lunches were good, we found the dinners to be not so great. The food was rather bland and the service ranged from incompetent (but still friendly) to outstanding.
Lunches do get rather crowded with the day guests, but we always found that we were given a good table (not sure if that was luck or policy).

Most of the guests seemed to respect the concept of the place and spoke in low tones and refrained from using cell phones. Given that it was a summer weekend (before the July 4 holiday, no less), there were lots of families with kids of all ages. Usually I avoid places that cater to families, however we found that the kids and teenagers were mostly well-behaved.

So - on the first day, I thought "never again!". By the time we left, I wondered "when are we coming back?".

Room Tip: We preferred the lake view (high floor) over the mountain view. But in the fall, I think I would cho...

Recently went on a girls weekend to Mohonk. We stayed in one of the cottages. Very rustic and in need of updating. The lake gets very crowded with people who want to swim and lay out. Must get there early to get a spot on the dock. As cottage renters we did not get the food plan and found out that lunch and dinner were very expensive. We ventured into New Paltz and ate at 2 great restaurants, Rock and Rye and A Tavoli. The grounds are amazing and have wonderful trails. Would return but stay in the main house. Spa treatments were fabulous.

I decided to bring my pregnant wife to Mohonk for a parents to be massage as a mother's day gift. We had a very respectable and caring staff experience. The masseuse was wonderful and listened to my concerns and desires.

The thing that sets Mohonk over the top is the outdoor activities after a Spa treatment. Relaxed hiking with spectacular views... Wonderful.

Mohonk Mountain House is an old family operated luxurious hotel with gorgeous grounds.
The hotel is very expensive and expansive. You can really see where the money goes and every inch is well maintained. The scale of the hotel and design almost evoke a fairy tale or at the very least historical dramas.
For a 3 day weekend(2 nights) for 3 people it was $840 per night. That includes the cost of 18 meals(3 people, 3 per day), plus unlimited use of the grounds. The hiking is world class and the lake has kayaks, row boats, peddle boats, and a beach. They have a huge staff, happy to help and all are knowledgable. Golfers I know said they have 36 holes and that it is a challenging course.
This is not the Poconos and the hotel makes that clear, entertainment is more likely to be a folk group and story telling around a camp fire than a comedien. There are two dining rooms, one has a dress code that requires jackets and does not allow sneakers.
All rooms have wifi, not all rooms have TVs. You can get a TV for a daily fee and a small fridge if you request it. I believe all the rooms have balconies. There is a spa wing that is only a few years old. Some family members that know about spas used it and were very impressed.
Some reviewers mention day visitors, which there are, but at no time did the hotel or grounds feel crowded. We were not able to use the horses because they had already been reserved.
If you are from the NY area, the location could not be more convenient. It is less than 70 miles from Westchester County, NY.

My only real criticism is that it would be really great to sit outside and order drinks and you just can't do that, the bar is in the interior. The staff hinted that future renovations may be planning a waterside bar, but who knows.

Room Tip: The lakeside views are great. If you don't get lakeside then get a high floor. The views non-lak...
