Dec 30 was our last lunch there and they were hesitant is not crude about us grabbing a sandwich and hitting the road. For such a cold weekend soups were limited, cold salads in force and staff rushing to get out us out. If felt horrible for people checking in and being caught up in this.
The incredible old smell is not one I love and all the full length furs were off. Hiking, skiing not Grandmas coat needed.
If you don't use valet because of the wait stairs are very steep!
Careful for black ice. New Paltz is nice fora flat walk and coffee it is over run by pizza, Thai and palm reading. Going back on the mountain is dangerous once dusk rolls around. Prepare for this trip. Cards, board games, backs in the room, computer with family movies and a sleeping bag for extra snuggles or naps after the wind and cold.
We did enjoy the period holiday decor

This is the place we go to on an extra-special occasion. The grounds are breathtaking, and I love to hike up to the tower. The food is amazing, too. It is delicious, and there are many vegetarian options, which is important to me. I would definitely recommend coming up here.

This was a bit of a bust. Food was very average, pricey and though the service was making a good effort, it was overall hard to be excited about. I had read so many positives that it was really hard to swallow what ahppened. Food was delivered and was cold #1. Second - it was Ciopinno on the menu, but was in fact some fresh and some frozen fish/ shelfish with a very little tomato sauce added to dish. I do not reccommend this place

We expected a great meal and visit to this wonderful old resort. Our first problem was the $80.00/ person fee for brunch and access to the grounds. It was raining when we arrived so walking the grounds was out. Valet parking was a nightmare with people checking out, waiting for there cars, people coming in for the buffet, and all of this moving thru a cute tunnel that only allowed one car per time. I also thought it interesting that every car had to be completely videoed to make sure all the dings were noted before the staff parked the car. We then had to wait to be seated, along with about 50 other people who had reservations for noon. Our group of six was seated, we were immediately given tea or lemonade and our waiter walked off. We had to grab another waiter to find out about the buffet. There was no champagne or other liquor available. The food was plentiful but average at best. The garlic mashed potatoes and braised pork loin were the only good food based on my group's consensus.

After walking around the hotel which is beautiful, we asked if it was a possible to get a rain check to return to visit the gardens. First we were told no, there was nothing that could be done about the weather. The next manager said that we should have changed our reservations 24 hours before our visit if we were worried about the weather.

Leaving was another nightmare with valet parking. We stopped the valet in the middle of the street so as to avoid the tunnel. As it was, it still took 15 minutes to get our car.

The hotel and grounds that we saw from the drive are absolutely beautiful. The service and food were terrible.

Definitely not a place that I would recommend for a couple. Lots of large groups with children. Looks like a lot of family reunions. Location is great with beautiful gardens. But very expensive to just hike to the top of the hill and stroll through the gardens and we enjoyed both. But dining was very disappointing. Breakfast buffet was good, but not lunch and certainly not dinner. It was not a lunch with light salads, sandwiches, soups, etc. It was heavy, hot entrees that would would find on a buffet in a inexpensive chain restaurant. And the dinner experience was a disaster. Young waiter was sincere but not trained. He couldn't describe the entrees. Wanted to take our dinner order with our drink order. We had to get up and request a bread basket after two other tables that came in after us were given their bread. Only three courses, we expected more courses with smaller portions. Salad was large but warm. Meat entrees were large but cool. Small portion of vegetables. Dining Room was noisy and young woman close to us was wearing short athletic shorts and flip flops. My husband packed a sport coat which he only needed at Monhonk, and not needed anywhere in Montreal. Waiter dropped a glass of red wine behind my husband. Although he apologized we asked to speak to a manager.
Received another apology and offer for dry cleaning. Most of the rest of staff was very pleasant, except the young man in the gift shop replied "There you go" and no" thank you" when I purchased a soda.
