“Carl is a gem!”
Reviewed October 1, 2013

Carl, the owner of Enthusiastic Spirits is wonderful - extremely accomodating and concerned. My mom and I wanted to stay there (check out the site, it looks lovely) and were very excited when we booked. However since my mom and I are allergic to cats, we inquired about the rooms and the pet policy, given that they are pet friendly. Carl was very thorough in his explanation - they occasionally have dogs staying in the rooms and he has 2 cats in the main house of his own. Although we already reserved our room, he wanted to make sure we were comfortable and emphasized that breakfast is served in the main house where the cats live. Because of this, unfortunately we had to cancel. However I am grateful for his honesty and care and for me not having a terrible allergy attack!

It was more than a pleasure to stay at Enthusiastic Spirits. Our Gracious host Carl exceeded every expectation. Gave us great suggestions for our stay, was readily available if we needed anything. The room was perfectly cozy and comfortable. It felt like a home away from home. Except the views were definitely more spectacular than the view from my apartment. The breakfast was amazing! It was a five star experience as soon as we arrived. Would definitely return.

Our stay at Enthusiastic Spirits guest house was fantastic! The rooms are lovely, the views are spectacular and Carl the host provides a great homemade breakfast. the waffles were delicious! The rooms are in a separate building from the main house. We hiked in the Gunks and enjoyed strolling through New Paltz just a few minutes away. We loved it so much we didn't want to leave and will be sure to be back hopefully during leaf season to enjoy the colors from the deck at Carl's place.

We just finished a 2-week drive from the Hudson Valley to Malone, and Enthusiastic Spirits was by far the best place we stayed. All reviews below do not exaggerate. The magnificent setting: would have been happy to just sit on the lawn and enjoy the panoramic view of the meadows and ponds leading to the Gunks. The cozy, beautifully furnished room with the great shower, the superb food, prepared by foodie and sometime Culinary Institute student Carl, and all the special touches like the mini kitchen between the room in the coach house, refrigerator stocked with beer, milk, and other drinks, pantry stocked with hot and cold cereal, tea, and coffee (Keurig coffee maker), and Carl sometime dropping by with home-baked goodies. Carl was the best part, also as described with a wry but warm wit, but not intrusive. Wish we could have stayed longer and hope to return. Fall must be gorgeous.

Our long weekend at Carl's was great, just as the other reviews say. But the detail they left out that topped it off for me -I'm not kidding-was the shower. It is sized for a king (even Henry VIII). Spacious, wide and tall, with the shower head high, the spray easily adjusted to your pleasure, and the water as steamy as you want. Heaven

Great Hudson Valley getaway with lovely rooms, great views, and "hotelier" quality hospitality and host. Why fight the Hampton traffic when you can enjoy a great getaway less than two hours north of Manhattan? Rooms are spacious and beautifully appointed in separate building from the main house with separate entrances, so ideal if you want a more private experience than the usual B&B. Funny and good-natured host Carl keeps the coffee brewing hot and fresh, and the Alaskan Blueberry Coffee Cake is out of this world. Have been a guest here in all seasons and the location offers amazing views of the gunks. I'm from Pasadena, California, and appreciate the green and lush change of pace from California madness.

Room Tip: Each is distinct and special in its own way.

A host who's wry wit will keep you amused and a location that's hard to beat. Looks out over the Gunks, which is minutes away by car. The guesthouse is separate from the main house, so it's totally private and has everything you need. Great hiking in the area - perfect for a weekend getaway.
